NEW MERCH SITE COMING SOON!
A now former IGN editor was caught plagiarizing a review of Dead Cells and got canned for it. That's where the story should have ended.
Instead, Filip Miucin couldn't help making it worse for himself, and encouraged the world to uncover an entire career built off the stolen work of other people. What a tit.

I was working as a teaching assistant at Penn State when a student plagiarized his research paper--having stolen full paragraphs from an article written BY THE PROFESSOR OF THE CLASS.

Did they at least put the paragraphs in quotation marks? I actually had to resist doing that instead of rewriting something in my own words once. Somebody had written exactly what I wanted to say, but as I wasn't going to elaborate on it I couldn't include it wholesale.

We had a top level Politician in Germany, who held positions as the minister of Economy, Science and Defense at some point, whos political career ended when people found instances of plagiarism in his PhD dissertation. He stole work from several people, including his own dissertation supervisor, which is a true 200IQ move right there. He became a national joke in 2011 and was not really heard of ever since. Naturally this didn't HAVE to end his career as a politician - not like you need a PhD to qualify - but after the scandal the party didn't really want to be associated with him anymore and so he "decided" to resign. For anyone interested, the guy used to be from the conservative- right wing "christian social union" (CSU) - party. He also comes from some old noble family and his full name is "Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Buhl-Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg"

@@benedictrogers1478 If you just write: this was best expressed by : "" [source], then it wouldn't be plagiarism, would it? It might not get you a passing grade, if there is not enough of your own work in it, but as long as you clearly mark thoughts that are not your own as such, you are not doing anything unethical.

Using a template is not plagiarism, mate. Templates exist for a reason, I used one for my own CV, as do millions of others every day. Everything else he did, however... yeah, plagiarism. I don't even understand why he did it. If you play a game, I'm sure you must have an opinion on it, and you just put that into your review. Unless he never even played those games and then hastily copy/pasted some else's work to make it look like he did.
@Foxhood
@Foxhood 5 лет назад
@@Azariachan Keep in mind he didn't so much copy a template as copy the descriptions within that are to serve as examples on how to describe the function word for word. Somehow, working for IGN managed to convince him that: A) IGN's viewers are idiots, B) IGN's reviewers are unapologetic PR agents for the AAA game industry, C) the only thing that matters in gaming journalism is how much money it makes for the corporation you work for, and thus D) plagarism is okay, because it will never be noticed by your idiot viewers nor punished by your bosses. Amazing part was his logic was 100% correct on every single count except the last one, and even then only years after the fact. Don't you see? He's a specimen of what "journalism" has become these days.

Pixel Perfect I abide by the notion that you shouldn't trawl the RU-vidr pools to hire for a Journalist position for a few reasons: 1. It's better being the other way around. RU-vidrs are making the mainstream games media sites more irrelevant by the day and we are seeing more and more qualified joutnalists are flocking to YT and Twitch to create they're own content. 2. Higher education isn't as much of a class issue as the effects of left-centrist government are still being felt and working class people (like myself) have gone to Uni and received an education. If anything It's our anti-intellectual society that does more damage to the act of applying for an education. 3. The culture of RU-vidr can bring on an air of unprofessionalism and the need to work more comfortably. There are RU-vidrs who do their job from scratch, do their research and still make an impact on society (like Phillip De Franco) obviously but by hiring based on views instead of experience will always comes first and that is something that is classist and comes with its own risks. Years ago, going by views would have been sound but now as RU-vid has grown, more people are using their already-established presences in order to garner views.

Pixel Perfect PLAGIARISM: "My computer was on fire yesterday." "My computer was on fire yesterday." NOT PLAGIARISM: "My computer was on fire yesterday." "The computer I own was on fire the day before today." It's only plagiarism when it's IDENTICAL. Just like Sterdust/Stardust thing. Sterdust isn't considered plagiarism, so why Miucin's reviews should be?

Well I don't know about you but I thought Dead Cells was an amazing game: Dead Cells takes the progression of Metroidvania, and takes you into this procedurally generated action rouge-like, that has you slowly chipping away at its steep difficulty. Although Dead Cells falters slightly with some repetition setting in, especially in some of the earlier sections and longer play throughs. In most games of this genre your coolest spells are often set to strictly longer recharge timers or a limited mana system. But in Dead Cells, your abilities have extremely quick recharge which allows you to seamlessly integrate your new gadgets into normal encounters and it doesn't penalise you for using your cool stuff. Hey I could be a games critic!

Make him an insignificant NPC you talk to once or twice and call him the Pilferer. Have his dialogue be about how he's accomplished great things and people recognised him for the artefacts he held in the past. When you kill him, he drops an item (perhaps a mirror like you suggested) that creates a copy of any item on the ground. Only when you use the copy, you find it does nothing or has a negative effect tied to it, despite it's list of stats being greater. Maybe call it the "Fool's Mirror," or add the prefix "Fool's" to the copied items, in case people don't get the reference and think it's a bug. Or maybe have the mirror's description change after you use a copied item that provides the "moral lesson," about how anything copied will only be superficial and hollow, and may even bring about one's downfall. Assuming any of that would work mechanically. I haven't actually played Dead Cells yet so I don't know.

And IGN agreed to pay him the money they got from that video. They never once said anything about going to court or anything. I was surprised. Not that I'm trying to defend Filip, but looking at other's opinions to help your own isn't a rare or bad thing. Hell, in school, we are taught to do research on other people journals and articles to help with our papers. The purpose to this is to gain new knowledge and perspective you did not notice or considered from your own experience. Some of those opinions you may disagree and as such you develop counterargument for them which makes your opinions more original as your own experience to disprove their opinion. However, what Filip fail to understand about "researching" is that it suppose to help form your opinion, not using the research as your own opinion.

He "wrote" his section of the paper and linked his source. The source was goddamn Wikipedia, and his writing was literally copied and pasted. I told the professor, because plagiarism is supposed to be an expellable offence, and she gave a half-assed speech to the class about doing your own work. The next week he did the same thing. I've been a video game journalist for the past 13 years, and it makes me so sad to see people like this Filip guy continue to tarnish the already godawful reputation of our trade. There is no excuse for plagiarism. Period. Stealing from fellow hard-working people in the same line of work is abhorrent enough, but this idiot going the extra mile and trying to ego-trip himself out of an already terrible situation is like pissing in the community pool...from the starting block. Did it slip his mind, that the Internet NEVER forgets? He not only made himself completely unhiriable as an editor and journalist, but probably as most everything else too. In this day and age, employers don't just check your credit and rap sheet, but also your social media and history on the Internet. A simple friggin Google search would out him as an untrustworthy, lazy crook with an ego the size of the Sun. No sane employer would ever hire someone like him, because as Jim said, plagiarism never happens just once. It's a character trait, one that combines complete inability or reluctance to do your job with the complete disregard for other people's hard work that borders on sociopathy. Combine that with the utter lack of remorse and sheer arrogance he demonstrated after the fact, and you get a person that's lower on the hire-list than ex-convicts. There are no halfway-houses for people who commit career/character suicide of this magnitude. So, Filip, good luck flipping burgers somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no internet connection...

As John Milton put it, "Plagiarism only occurs if the work is not bettered by the borrower." Don't break the rules and plagiarise someone's work. Be inspired by them, sure. Learn from them, sure. Remix and build upon other's work until it's totally different from the original. Make it your own. Own it.

I subbed to boomstick after this and gotta say that the reviews he gives that are cut down to 4-5 minutes are really refreshing in the present youtube where longer content is advisable.

I don't understand this guy at all. Why become a games reviewer if you don't want to play games or talk about games? It would be like becoming a chef so you could buy prepackaged food from another place and pass it off as your own. Why?

BabyKrogan From someone who has worked as a cook for many years, the vast majority of the dishes you cook we're created by someone else. It's very rare in the restaurant industry to be able to make your own food.

He knew he was fucked when the other stories about him were primed to come out. The fact he challenged the internet to do so has to be some weird Freudian admittance of guilt For just this one time, he could've made a sob story about deadlines and give transparency and promised to book his ideas up. But he knew his house of cards was about crumble. Why on earth he came out and "apologised" (in a way that wasn't apologising for his actions, nor was it admitting anything) is beyond me.

I wasn't genuinely ticked off with him until he posted that disgusting apology video in which he denied the obvious and even threw accusations at someone he'd stolen from... I was willing to assume something was going on in his life and he just stole a review due to some time constraint (especially as it was such an obvious, seemingly unpracticed theft) which would warrant firing and such but not necessarily mean he's a terrible guy, but after that video it was clear this man is an asshole. I suppose sociopaths just can't help themselves.

Not even the original writer of the Dead Cells review was all that mad when the incident started. Philip probably had a chance to redeem himself quite a bit with a sincere apology. His pride got to him, probably couldn't stand the idea that he was ever in the wrong. Though it was probably a good thing he did post that video, since it exposed all the works he did before the Dead Cells review.

No one accidentally plagiarizes an entire 4 minute video, then instead of owning up to his mistakes he tries to weasel his way out of it by telling people to find others who plagiarize. What a lazy, cowardly, weasel of a human being.

I've always regarded IGN as a last resort for literally anything games media related. This new scandal does nothing to alter that opinion. Even still i feel bad for IGN having to run damage control over this.

Agreed really. I haven't paid much attention to them in several years simply cause it became increasingly apparent to me that most of their content was either: written by people who are unaware of or incapable of noticing flaws in game design and writing; or that the outlet as a whole was...well i wont say "on the take" but defiantly more friendly with publishers (especially the ones that can power children's toys if you catch my drift) to the point of being critically corrupted. That being said i really do not envy their staff having to deal with all this crap and the horrible shadow it has cast on an otherwise entertaining, (if not, in my opinion, reliable) games media outlet.

There's just way too many places to go for video game information that it's weird to even have a last resort when even tiny, unknown youtubers will report on video game news, and far less biased. IGN's reaction to this situation was actually really solid, to which they get props for, but this does not undo their awful reputation. Aside from their PR management team (at least in regards to this incident), the only thing I can really say in their favor is they aren't as bad as Kotaku
