The fact that the sontarans managed to breach galifrays defenses makes them a worthy opponent. Almost as powerful as the daleks and cybermen

There's no way to imagine how electrifying this cliffhanger was to audiences back in 1978. The internet didn't exist yet, so the danger of a surprise this big getting prematurely leaked wasn't quite as high. The "holy sh**" factor of this moment when it was first broadcast must have been through the roof.

My favorite scene from the serial is when the sontaran jumps over the pool, but instead falls on a chair. He then gets knocked over by another chair through by the Doctor, and it is so obvious that the actor purposefully lowers himself down.
@lapelcelery42

Apparently he was actually supposed to fall over on that chair, but he was supposed to end up in the pool and didn't make it, which is why you can see the actor trying to shuffle over to the pool after he falls.

Answer to ? Below: the Doctor faked helping the Vardans to find out where they were really from so he could time loop them and put an end to their targeting Gallifrey. He knew if he didn't, some other Time Lord would be used to infiltrate Gallifrey, and few other Time Lords could keep up such a ruse as the Vardans were telepathic, or even worse might truly want to help them invade for power (like Kelner or even The Master!), most which the Doctor explains to Borusa. That's why he expelled Leela - he knew she believed in him utterly, which the Vardans could not discover.

Those who dislike this story feel that this is the best part of it. Quite a shocking cliffhanger reveal, probably the only part of the story done right. I have heard that the surprise was kinda spolit four weeks earlier when after Underworld pt4 aired, there was a continuity slide for the following story. The picture used was that of the Sontarans in the Panopticon. Way to blow it BBC! Probably didn't want to show the Vardans but what was wrong with a promotional shot of the Doctor, Leela and K9?

What an anti-climax! This episode was building nicely; great story, twists aplenty, well acted (at times, Leela's "me Tarzan, you Jane" act was beginning to irritate) and then a moment to grab the viewer by the throat, just when you thought the more than worthy shimmering foes in this episode have been reaching for their coats - the Doctor goes quiet: Sontarans on Gallifrey! The unthinkable happened, but what a story! Until of course, the lead Sontaran opens his mouth. He sounds like the foreman of your local Jewson warehouse with a hair lip.

Sontarans were originally portrayed as short. In their first appearance, in TIME WARRIOR, the 3rd Doctor describes them to Sarah Jane as "Nasty, short and brutish". Australian actor Kevin Lindsey, at 5-foot-2-inch-tall, was inside the costumes of the first two Sontarans in Doctor Who in TIME WARRIOR and SONTARAN EXPERIMENT. The New Series shows the Sontarans as originally portrayed. Personally, I feel that Kevin Lindsey's "Sontarans" remain the all-time best!

The Vardans hacked into the Matrix and were a considerable threat to the Time Lords. The only way the Doctor could neutralize that threat was to put a time loop around their home planet. But he didn't know the location of their planet and the only way he could get that information was to help them conquer Gallifrey. Once he found out the location, he was able to repel the invaders and put a time loop around their planet. But what he didn't know was that the Vardans were really working with the Sontarans. Then the Doctor had a new enemy to repel.

I agree that the Sontarans, as originally presented by Kevin Lindsay in TIME WARRIOR and SONTARAN EXPERIMENT are the most imposing, and I personally feel that Kevin Lindsay's "Sontarans" have not been topped. All Classic Series Sontarans after Kevin Lindsay gradually weakened the characters, and the New Series has not helped the Sontaran character at all. I would like to see a return to the Kevin Lindsay approach of methodical, heartless, prideful-to-s-fault, killer Sontaran.

I just re-watched this story earlier and I realised something that really bugged me. At the beginning of the story, The Doctor joins forces with the Vardans to help them take over Gallifrey, right? So my question is this: *Why does he do that?* I mean, he implies that he wants power, but that's extremely out of character, in fact you can tell that he's purposely being out of character even before he reveals that he wants to stop them. Don't get me wrong, it sets the story up really well and it's a fantastic premise, I just don't get the reasoning. It just seems like in part 3 he turns around and says that he's not really with the Vardans, but he has to be careful because of their telepathy just so we could have a twist and it goes back to him saving the day. I dunno though, I may have missed a line in there where he explains his reasons to someone. If I did, somebody *please* tell me, because this and the poor production values in part 6 are the only things that are keeping me from really liking this story and I *really* want to like it! If not, a crazy fan theory will do! lol
@gaz10pro

He tricked them into going to Gallifrey so he could trap them in a time loop. When he opened up the force field to let them in he accidentally let the Sontarans in as well.
@russelltietjen4407
@russelltietjen4407 9 лет назад
Yes but why did he do that in the first place? What I was trying to get at was why would he side with the Vardans in the first place if he was planning to stop them anyway? He made an alliance with them. Helps them take over Gallifrey. Then reveals that he had a plan to stop them from taking over. But why do it in the first place? What was he trying to gain from siding with the Vardans? He could of just told them "Get lost" and run back into the TARDIS and fly off, but he goes through this elaborate plan to stop them by helping them with their plan and the reason for that never seems to be given (though, again, I probably missed the line). The idea of stringing them along just to trap them in the time loop sounds very... strange to me.
@gaz10pro
@gaz10pro 9 лет назад

Russell Tietjen I'm not sure if it's justified, but I always thought that he didn't rly have a choice because they could see into his mind, and since they were going to try and invade Gallifrey and/or harm him, he went along with it with the intention to be able to stop them.
