Sure thing, thanks a bunch, friend! Get 4mm eva foam from TNT Cosplay Supply and draw the pattern by hand, that's a skill you'll want to learn for your future projects. You'll also need adhesive; I use contact cement. You'll need primer; I use PlastiDip. You'll need paint; I use cheap bottles of acrylic paint and Montana brand spray paint (for the decals). You'll also need some paint brushes, get a set of them, but the ones you'll need for this are a flat and a round. Oh, and get some plastic buckles, some nylon webbing straps, some heavy-duty black thread, and a hook needle. You'll need those for making the piece wearable. If you can, get some worbla too, to strengthen the connection between the foam and the nylon webbing. It's expensive stuff, but well worth it in my opinion. Hope that helped you some, I wanna see pictures of your works!

I hope I'm not asking too much by asking for the measurements you used? I doubt they'd be the same as mine, but having a total frame of reference would be so helpful since I've never made a pattern in my life!
@QuantumLeapCosplay
@QuantumLeapCosplay 4 года назад
When making armor, I take the single most important measurement and then work from there, keeping the proportions as close to the original as I can. In the case of this armor, I measured from the top of my waist (where the top of a belt buckle usually sits) to the top of my sternum, where my two collarbones meet. Then I just worked from there. Armor is mostly improvised and cosplay in general is a big game of trial and error. You can always fine-tune pieces after you’ve made them or you can start over. Always learn from your mistakes and don’t worry if you do make mistakes, because guess what? You always will.

@QuantumLeapCosplay
@QuantumLeapCosplay 4 года назад
Thanks! I never understood why just about everyone I have seen make a video on the body armor make it so absurdly thick. I made it out of synthetic linen. Real linen is expensive, but that will work well too. You can also use canvas, burlap, or synthetic leather. In the game, it’s described as leather but I personally wanted to use fabric. I took a woman’s trench coat pattern, modified it, and stitched all the pieces together. It didn’t make for good video so I didn’t bother implementing it. I would also recommend getting a sewing machine, it’ll save you a TON of time. Etsy is a good site for commissioning someone to make such a duster for you as well if you don’t want to tackle the task of making it yourself. Hope this helps!

Used your videos for my inspiration to make my armour. I ended up cutting in 2 halves at the natural waist and then fiberglassing it and then attaching the upper and lower halves to a thick peice of 6oz leather so I can still somewhat move but also have actual rigid armor that could actually at least reduce the impact of a baseball bat lol Quick question though man or maybe someone else reading this might know, I've looked at both the opening cinematic as well as both new Vegas and 76 in game models and I'm trying to figure out for the duster is it supposed to be cloth or leather? It almost looks and behaves like a mid to heavy weight suede leather but I cant find any info on the interwebs confirming. I do leather work as a hobby the fabric seamstress in the family would be my wife lol either way I'm just looking for other people's opinions what material it should be.
@QuantumLeapCosplay
@QuantumLeapCosplay 2 года назад
Fiberglass is a FANTASTIC material if you know how to work it (which I currently don’t, but that’ll change)! That must be a great piece you made. I did actually find one reference that said it’s leather; the design took beats from a character called Tycho from Fallout 1, who was a Desert Ranger and described himself as one in “dusty leather armor”. His appearance looks quite different than the Ranger Armor in F:NV, but lore-wise, it makes sense. I knew this going into it, but I personally didn’t want to make my trench coat using faux leather, I wanted it to have some flimsiness to it. So I went with synthetic linen.

What r the measurements for the armour
@QuantumLeapCosplay
@QuantumLeapCosplay 4 года назад
Armor is a game of trial and error and every person has different physical properties. Improvisation is a fundamental skill go have in cosplay. That said, for armor pieces, I take the single most important measurement and then make the rest of the piece as proportionately close to the original as possible. In the case of this armor, my base measurement was the height, which I used the distance between the spot where the top of a belt buckle goes to the top of my sternum where my collarbones meet. Then I worked from there. Hope this helps!

I took a woman’s trench coat pattern from a craft store and modified it as best I could to match the one from the game. I used synthetic linen and a sewing machine (I highly recommend you invest in one if you expect to work with fabrics, it’ll cut project times down by like, 90%).

Back when I had Facebook, someone saw a post I made in a cosplay group and sent them to me. That’s probably not the answer you were hoping for, so I’ll give you some tips: my favorite program to make stencils and patterns of any kind is Adobe Illustrator. It does cost a monthly subscription and has a learning curve, but it’s worth it. If you don’t feel like doing that, try Paint.NET, which is free! I had a lot of positive experiences using it.

Superglue works for really small pieces, like rhinestones. For foam however, I use contact cement. Hardware stores usually sell it in glass jars and aluminum cans. I personally prefer the latter in combination with a glue pot, but the glue pots do tend to be a little spendy, usually $50-$60.

I no longer do commission work, sorry about that man. I appreciate your admiration though!! Brace yourself though, anything that is made by hand doesn’t come cheap because artists charge for their time. You can of course, make it yourself, which I’d encourage you to do! Don’t bother thinking you are not talented. All skill comes from actively developing them over time; my first cosplays were absolutely atrocious. Heck, I’m not even that proud of this one! Just pick up a knife, some foam, some glue, and some paint and get to work. You’ll learn SO MUCH by just making mistakes, I promise you. Especially if you are intentional about learning from them.
