On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share a quick and easy guide to harvesting garlic! Growing garlic is easy. It's cold tolerant, pest resistant, doesn't need pruning and is very low maintenance. However, the tricky part is knowing when to harvest garlic. This video teaches you when to dig up garlic and how to cure garlic for easy storage.

Also the garlic he said he didn't harvest in time, he said he bought at the grocery store. I'm assuming he meant culinary use garlic, as opposed to for planting. That would likely be soft neck garlic which does not develop scapes supposedly, but I see scapes /scapes remnants...?

Make sure you are removing the garlic scape after the first curl so that it puts the energy into the bulb.

I actually like it when it seeds the ground. I get lots of volunteer garlic growing. The heads are smaller, but it's free garlic.

Can l ask what a garlic cap is? My garlic for the past 2yrs are small. I put cow manure in sandy soil with organic potting mixture in the bed .

@@patriciaboatman8423 a scape only forms on hardneck varieties. Its a flower stem that comes from the middle of the plant and as it grows it curls. You want to remove these when they begin to curl (,you can eat them) so that the energy goes into forming the bulb and not energy into the flower stem.

@@2MinuteGardenTips they're so tiny I don't see the point when you can grow up to 8 new good sized garlic bulbs from just one clove. It's still free if you keep a couple cloves to plant in the fall. I'm not sure Id dedicate space to a very underdeveloped bulb. But that's just me

Harvest those garlic scapes when they curl. They have a great mild garlic taste. Terrific to make a batch of pesto to freeze, use like green onions in cooking, or dry and powder for a mild garlic powder. Yum!

I let them seed the ground. You'll get free garlic plants. The heads will be smaller, but you get a lot of them.

I got a great garlic harvest this year. I built a drying rack for them for next year. I had garlic all over the place drying. I used the saw horse and wood slits. Built two, one for onions and one for garlic. Happy I got good seed garlic so I don’t have to buy them because they are kind of pricey.

Cut back the scapes, then save a couple of your biggest bulbs to plant in the fall!

I let the scapes re-seed. You get smaller bulbs, but they're still good.

My history shows that if you harvest scapes, you can use those and it also increases the output size of your bulbs at the end. I’ve always seen bigger bulbs when I cut my scapes off. Plus, the scapes are absolutely delicious. Is there a reason why you left the scapes on?

I planted from seed garlic and it's dying back heavily with some of them having already gone completely brown and it's only been just over 6 months.

Im about to pull up a head to see if they're ready. It's my first time growing organic seed garlic that was successfully overwintered. I'm still nervous that they didn't turn out, though. We'll see.

You should harvest when half the plant has died, not the whole plant or you risk it splitting.

garlic had scapes growing and you never mentioned it. most garlic growers suggest cutting the scapes and that is the indicator that they should be ready to harvest in a 1-3 week period.

It's going to vary widely based on where you live. I'll be pulling all mine within a week, so all my garlic will be harvested late May/early June. Folks in cooler regions will be behind me. Northern tier states may not harvest til mid-summer.

The scapes take energy from the plant that would otherwise be used to develop the bulb. The "free gralic" you THINK you are getting is actually what might have been part of the bulb you didn't get. So, is it really "free?"

My garlic is not really dying yet but i leave for holiday in some days. I dont trust my mom to do it while i am gone. (All her plants die and i am now the caretaker amd gardener)

We had a really wet May/June. Sad I had to pull them so early but the bottom 3 leaves had died off and the soil was way too wet. Growing in southern BC is tough some years.

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of a covered garden. Any chance you can build a high tunnel, greenhouse or some other way? If I could do ti all over again, that's what I would like to do to take rainfall out of the equation.

Where is everybody getting their music garlic from? I ordered from eBay last year and they weren’t any good. I have 2 surviving plants right now that aren’t looking very good, out of the 1 lb of bulbs I bought. The rest rotted in the ground over winter. I paid over $20 for them 😩

Because it went bad in the back of the pantry. It wasn't edible, so it was either throw it away or plant it. Therefore, free. It was inedible trash.

Don’t panic. Bees love allium flowers and I usually let one or two flower just for them. They won’t produce seeds, but you might get some bulbuls and those can be planted to grow into garlic but they take 2-3 years to actually make a head of garlic.

Seems like everyone’s garlic is about a month early this year. That’s okay because the beans will go in after they are harvested and have an extra month to grow on.
