In this video we try different holds with our little XS19 and see which hold works out the best!
This is just a fun little video we thought we'd film in the run up to our Rotex review.

In my humble inexperienced opinion this is the greatest video a new spring rifle owner can watch. Marksmanship is a really complicated art. Thanks for the advice Daniel!

Hi Vaios! Thanks ever so much for the kind compliment it really means a lot. Springer shooting is an art form like you've said yourself you usually can't just pick one straight up and get sub 5p groups straight away. This is why we made the video to show that sometimes only the most minor adjustments in hold can make what you think is an inaccurate rifle into an accurate one!

Thank you so much for this test ! My normal tool of choice for pest/vermin is a .222 T3 but unfortunately it's not suitable for the egg thieves in our chicken run. So I bought a gas sprung xs-19 which printed the most exquisite 1/4 choke patterns with all the pellets that I have, holding it as a have held all my previous air rifles. After seeing your excellent test on I'm now confident I can fix the problem 😁 Many thanks and best regards Mark

A trigger job on this rifle and the results are so much better, I really love working on these triggers I strip them down to every last part check them polish them space them add better parts and they are really good, but it's the accuracy that is transformed it really does make that much better.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Hi Robert, the trigger they come with is... a bit mediocre at best, with a lot of ours that come in the sears don't even reset if you ease off the trigger which can be somewhat concerning to say the least! With tweaks though like you've said they can be pretty pukka and it makes them a far more accurate rifle. Thanks Robert and all the best.

I was trained to shoot in the military, the hold they used (pre bullpup) was as you did with your best group with a small addition. When ready to fire give a gentle twist (with both hands) inwards towards the stock to steady the sight picture...firm but comfortable hold has never let me down, even standing unsupported. Also to note when unsupported stance is important too. Never was a fan of the artillery hold, the reason artillery was allowed to rock back on recoil was purely because, until the advent of recoilless, they had no way to completely control that force. Artillery was less accurate so I have never seen how releasing control of your gun works.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 10 месяцев назад
Fantastic comment thanks Muppeteer. The supposed science behind the artillery hold for springers is that the pellet hasn't left the barrel before the recoil has set in and so by not allowing the rifle to recoil freely you end up interfering with the rifle's natural behaviour. The issue I have with this is that in my mind if the rifle is almost unsupported then it's free to fling pellets all over the place. Even the PCP's can "flick" pellets all over during the shot cycle.
@muppeteer
@muppeteer 10 месяцев назад
Totally agree...No one should fire an uncontrolled or even semi controlled weapon. know your weapon and learn to be part of it...the gun should be part of you not a beast to let roam free...maybe the 'Drop short' hold is the reason people don't get on with springers@@bigdansairguns83
@jacklurcher5813
@jacklurcher5813 7 месяцев назад
@@bigdansairguns83 I think the reasoning behind the artillery hold is eliminating human input as far as possible during the shot cycle. With a high velocity rifle there is an extremely short time between the hammer dropping on the firing pin and the bullet exiting the muzzle. Provided you control the initial recoil and maintain sight picture for a couple of milliseconds there is little opportunity for the shooter to disturb the aim. PCP rifles have much lower velocity and a longer period of time between hammer drop on the air valve and pellet exiting the muzzle. However there's negligible recoil, so as long as you keep it on target, all's good. Springers have all sorts of movement going on during the shot cycle. When cocked the piston is to the rear, when fired the spring pushes the piston forward, creating recoil and shifting the weight forward, dropping the muzzle, there's then rebound at the end of the compression stroke, flipping the muzzle up. All of this happens with the pellet still in the barrel. The theory with the artillery hold is if you let the rifle do what it wants, the pellet exits the muzzle at the same point during the shot cycle each time, giving a consistent group. You then adjust the sights accordingly. I think that probably works well for novices, particularly with hold sensitive springers, as it's very easy to change hand position, grip, cheek weld, cant during trigger pull etc without noticing the subtle changes, sending pellets everywhere. The looser the hold the better in this case. However once you become experienced you naturally begin to hold the rifle in a stable, repeatable, way. It's repeatability of the hold, with exactly the same positioning and grip that makes the rifle shoot consistently. Once you get a feel for a rifle the 1:5 grip you describe in the video is about the best hold for control and consistency. Hope that made sense!

@@bigdansairguns83 Oh that’s for sure but I really enjoy the challenge. PCP rifles are very appealing but personally I think I would get bored with one, being just a casual target shooter. It’s more important to me to master basic marksmanship rather than having the latest technology. I’m sure I would think differently if I was into hunting or pest control. Anyway I will try out this approach and let know how I get on, in the meantime BIG thanks Big Dan for the videos :)

Hahaha Hi Mark! I can't lie mate I didn't see the fly but trust me if I did he'd be minced where he stood. Or I'd try anyways haha. Shooting unrested can be a challenge but in my opinion it's not as hard as it's made out to be, don't take your first groups to heart and just keep changing your holds until you find one you can get consistent groups with and then practice the trigger control as yanks and pulls with that unrested causes worse flyers than if firing off a rest. The most important big though is to take your time and most importantly be sure to have fun. Once it all clicks it's a fantastic feeling. That being said though mate being able to shoot well with open sights is one hell of a talent. I'm not terrible with opens but you'd have spanked me back in the day (and probably would now too!). I shan't comment on the Mrs's comment Mark as I don't run that fast and you're a better shot than me haha. All the best mate and you and the Mrs look after each other.

This is a great video. I've got an XS19, and wondered why a light artillery hold often reaped scattered grouping. My HW99 definitely prefers the very light shouldering & artillery hold for best grouping, but I found the XS19 preferred being held a touch tighter like you witnessed. Love your unbiased & no bullshit explanations, & keep up the good work.

Hi Harry! I'm glad you liked the video and it's interesting to hear that our XS19's behave the same. I like to review things in laymans terms if I can mate, there's a saying I love that goes "Keep it simple, stupid!" and trust me I'm very good at being simple, but you've probably already learned that eh? Hi Dan , Strange ! I only got notification of this video today , weird ! , no problem though ,I've watched it now , a change from your normal revues , but welcome none the less, it definitely had some interesting results . Sorry if I'm being a bit pedantic but (& I may well be wrong ) I was under the impression that any form of hold where You allow the air rifle to have a degree of natural movement back & forth was classed as the artillery hold in much the same way that an artillery piece barrel recoils backward when fired before returning (more or less) to it's original position . Anyway pedantic's out of the way , I have to agree that every rifle will differ somewhat just as some barrels prefer pellet X as opposed to pellet Y . We must also remember that different people have different levels of strength and reach so each of us is as bad (Varied) as the rifles we use for being different & probably worse, simply because there are more people than air rifles. We're All the Same - - Just Different !. Anyway Thanks Dan & crew (if any) looking forward to whatever You have planned in the future , Stay Safe Stay Well , Everyone & if You can, Keep on Shooting .
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 4 года назад
Hi Richard, I'm glad you liked our somewhat different video this time. The artillery hold is usually (in airgun circles at least) considered to be a hold where the leading hand is wide open with the rifle rested upon the palm. The second hold in the video includes a more standard where 1:1 is still light in the forehand but the fingers are still naturally wrapped around the stock so there's still some contact. Cheers Richard and the same to you mate look after yourself and all the best to you and the family.

Well that point system worked out a treat for me this morning. I use a TX200 mk3 in 1.77 and an Hw99 in 2.2 off a bag on a bench as a rule. I wanted to apply this technique to the 99 both on the bench (no bag) and freehand mainly because the TX is just too heavy for freehand shooting for me. Having tried various grip strengths and pressures into the shoulder I found five out of ten for both worked best for me with the 99. One of my most enjoyable mornings thanks to trying this out and my groupings were vastly improved. Thanks for the tips again it really payed off for me :)

Dan, everyone should have to learn to shoot a springer before they're allowed to shoot a PCP. They can call themselves a marksman then. The springer is a disciplinarian tutor. The PCP is a baby-wheels, stabilized bike ride into shooting. Talking of babies, I use what I call the 'new-born baby hold' i.e holding well enough not to drop it but not tight enough to hurt it. I nearly gave up at one, no not one, but several painful stages , nearly hurling my Weihrauch HW35 springer into the river! Now I look upon it with affection and although I am not as accurate with it, (consistently), as I am with my Walther LGV Pro Sport springer, (which is as good at tack driving as my Air Arms PCP), I am grateful I bit the bullet, (pellet?) and persevered. You are the best reviewer on RU-vid and there are many to admire.

My .177 was a 6fpe ( max. in Germany)from Germany and I tuned it up to 17-18 fpe( 2. zero at 40 yds 1/2 " group , 1.zero at 12 yds) here in Norway ( No restrictions in power) But tuned it down to 12 fpe( because shot cycle being to hard and the gun was to loud) now 1.zero 12yds and 2. zero at 33 yds. The .22 cal. always being a 12 fpe gun and it is a pleasure to use 1. zero 12 yds and 2. zero at 30 yds using 14.35 gr. JSB´s or JSB´s Exact Jumbo RS 13.43 gr. 18 gr. are to heavy in this gun. 1 " group at 50yds

Finally the artillery hold is toast, gave up with that useless hold 40 years ago, standard hold reasonable pull on my rifles, works every time.

@@bigdansairguns83 I love your long-winded descriptions (a compliment not an insult) and I hang on every word. Looking forward to your next 'nice' instructional and entertaining video and thanks for the reply.

@@LordWilsonVILLA Thanks mate! Next up we'll be reviewing the Walther Rotex but I'm sure we can sort something instructional out. Besides we've just made a 9mm blank target and it'd be a travesty if we couldn't think of something to put it to use eh?

@@bigdansairguns83 GREAT! I was thinking of buying the Walther Rotex the one thing that put me off - it only has a ten-shot magazine in .22 cal. I'll decide after your next video. Cheers 🍻

Please help me keep a bit sane & reply to my email re a Scope & some pellets. Not after any freebies - just need to keep plinking in the back garden whilst still shielding from the virus!! I'm one of those Clinically extremely vulnerable people & need something else instead of just Telly time. I have COPD & had a near fatal heart attack 7 years ago. Postage price is not a problem. Thanks in advance. Martin.
