If it wasnt clear, the refresh issue I mention happens in every region setting and every video option. Its not due to enabling SCART. I noticed the issue before even knowing how to enable scart. The lines could be caused by the tv treating 240p as 480i. Try 240p test suite it will tell you what’s up, also lag testing would be super useful in these kind of reviews.

Actually those lines are screen tearing, and it has to do with the monitor not refreshing the image correctly since this same thing happens on retroarch without vsync enabled on a monitor that's not a vrr one. Its because SNES and NES consoles are a little above 60hz. Its a sync issue not a scaling issue though using the 240p test suite on the monitor probably isn't a bad idea though.

My dream is for some company make a tv that has modern components, that it's thin, but the screen itself, perfectly emulate CRT screens, resolution, scanlines, etc... for Retro gamers that don't want to deal with gigantic CRT tvs. I believe there's consumers to it, the Retro game scene would be crazy about it.

@@sandplasma Well if they are then something equivalent like a good small CRT composite monitor or TV. I distinctly remember during the 4:3 era LCDs were problematic and my friends and I used CRT computer monitors NEC Multisync was our favorite and composite CRT monitors for gaming the 1084 was our favorite for what seemed like forever until the 16:9 era. Even our TVs were CRT. I don't remember ever using a 4:3 LCD that would be good for gaming. I only remember this because when we were out and about at thrift stores, swap meets, etc and we'd find a good composite or NEC Multisync monitor we'd pick them up.

It doesn't have a 240p resolution mode, so it's up rezing to 480i. Interlacing is causing the tearing. A tink2x or other line doubler should allow 480p and solve the issue.

I'm so glad you are doing this. I'm from the UK and I have a Philips i bought around 2005, 20inch and 4:3. Has all the bells and whistles except component but DVI so I can mix and match with VGA and HDMI. At the time I had no idea about HD I just wanted a new TV and was still accustomed to 4:3. Since the retro buzz I started using the Scart and I was surprised how good it was even compared to a PVM. Very responsive and clear. I've been asking other channels that look at the best way to play retro systems to do a review to see if they could be the best alternative to CRT or PVMs. Keep it up you'll find the right one eventually.

Lucky find! The vertical screen tear looks like vertical refresh mismatch because the snes doesn’t output a perfect 60Hz which is nothing inherently wrong with the console or the monitor
@mottzilla4858
@mottzilla4858 Год назад
I agree. The issue is probably related to the NES and SNES not matching the expected NTSC framerate. The NES and SNES actually run slightly over 60hz but NTSC standard definition is expected to be 59.94hz I believe. Many other older consoles may show the same issue on this monitor. However newer ones may be fine such as DreamCast. Analog TVs were much more flexible when it came to these things.

I just bought this same model at Goodwill the other day. While I have the same refresh issue over composite, it does not appear to be there over VGA (using a MiSTer with vsync_adjust=2). As the screen is 5:4, I recommend enabling the VGA scaler on the MiSTer with a custom aspect ratio set to 4:3, then use the auto detect frame lock feature of the screen which in most cases stretches it to full width while maintaining the 4:3. It's especially fun with the PC engine core as the PC Engine has useful graphics in the overscan area, so by not hiding it you can take advantage of the 5:4 aspect without affecting the 4:3 aspect of the image
@eloist4383

The main problem with these older LCDs for gaming is they have really bad input lag.for retro gaming specially this is a big issue.you'll find even games that you're used to play feel difficult and frustrating and it's all because of bad input lag. CRT is the best way to play them,OLED is next. I've tried every display technology you can imagine for my retro games.

We used to sell that Samsung Syncmaster way back in 2001 when I first started at a certain big box electronics retailer. I always loved the way SD TV signals looked on it and it was great for an early LCD PC monitor but we barely sold any. It was running about $600ish if I recall correctly while other 15" LCD monitors we carried were in the $200-400 range. We'd occasionally get the college student or naval cadet that wanted it for the TV option so they could plug in a game console also but it was a hard sell in 2001/2002. Probably why they're hard to find now

I own a 930MP (updated model with DVI and component in) and a 940MW (16:10 1400x900 model). I don't recall running into the screen tearing issue with either of them, but I do have a SNES SCART cable and will retest when I have time. The SNES runs at 60.01Hz vs. NTSC standard 59.94Hz, which is likely the source of the problem. The SCART input does indeed treat all 240p content as 480i like those cheap scalers do. One plus is that these displays are fairly tolerant of the OSSC's output. Overall, I like having them as bench monitors for testing. Takes all the common analog video inputs, has built-in speakers, and is multi-system (NTSC/PAL/SECAM).

They tick some desired features: Black frame (no fugly silver casing), wide-gamut CCFL backlight with high contrast, soothing warm CCFL white point and great viewing angles (most 4:3 LCD's are low contrast TN screens), FullHD, plenty of inputs like 2xSCART, VGA, 3xHDMI, composite, component, RF, so EVERY console is covered from Atari 2600 to PS5, adjustment per input, proper stereo speakers, good remote.

This is funny. I got this exact model for free from a former employer a few years back because they were going to throw it away. I've had it stored for a few years now in my basement because I didn't have an immediate use for it, but refused to part with it because I'd never seen another SCART monitor anywhere. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I came into possession of an old Pentium III PC and needed a monitor for it, so I ended up pulling this out for that purpose. It works great as a PC monitor for Windows 98 and XP. The built in speakers are a nice bonus, especially since I didn't have any spare PC speakers to use. For the record @Madlittlepixel, I did test my Saturn with this on the SCART connection and it worked fine. I didn't see any of that screen tearing you have, so maybe yours has some issues. EDIT: I've been looking for the original software cd that came with this and can't seem to find it. If anyone sees this comment and knows where to find it, let me know. It had software for PC for use with the monitor and drivers I would love to make use of on my old PC.

Try trying changing the label on your input channel to "PC", on HDMI inputs it sets the screen to it's lowest latency mode and often changes your picture tuning options. I've never tried it on component or scart, in theory if it works on VGA it should work on component as they are more or less the same/related signal types. You don't get these issues on CRT because a CRT does not have a fixed resolution and can scan in any resolution up to it's max res automatically from the analogue signal where the pulses are simply amplified to adjust the electromagnets to bend the electron beam directly onto the surface.

I just picked this monitor up today for $5. I don't see what your talking about unless the screen is white then I see the refresh but while gaming I don't see anything, but I'm playing dreamcast. I'm going to test other consoles soon.

I had that 910 back in the day, it was pretty expensive and I remember I had to return 3 until I got one with no stuck pixels

PS, when I had it, I had it hooked to original XBOX. I never saw that screen tearing when I had it. I’d have remembered that.

You should try to find a old ctr monitor, it's great

Aside from saving space and possibly cost, I'm not sure what the point is in buying an old lcd over a crt. The picture on a crt will be better.

I know the Dell you are talking about, I had one. 20", 1600x1200, has (I think) DVI, Component, SVideo, maybe composite and coax. There is another to look out for though. It is a Dell 23-ish inch 1920x1200. I had one of those as well. Same component, s-video DVI (maybe 2) I can't remember if it had HDMI or DisplayPort or both. There is a spot to attach a Dell monitor speaker below the screen, decent sound with volume knob and headphone jacks. I wish I had kept it. Because it is 1920x1200 and not 1920x1080, it did proper 4x3 using 1600x1200 and 16x9 1080p. You would have black bars on the sides or top/bottom but you would have perfect scale. I remember in the menu it had 1:1, Aspect and Fill for video option. You could switch between SNES, GameCube and Switch, all looking great. Ultimately, I just didn't have much room for it all so I let them go. I still got a Samsung 27" PC monitor but it does have TV features like COAX, Composite, Component, S-Video. It has HDMI with VGA and DVI and a remote

That 1920x1200 monitor I remember is the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP. That does not have HDMI or Display Port but the Dell UltraSharp U2410 does, however, you'll lose S-Video. The 2407WFP would probably do fine with GameCube but I'm not sure about heading down toward SNES/NES resolutions.

I couldn't spot the issue until 9:24. There I see it clearly... I use to have two of these LCD TV's back in the days. They where quite ok! I didn't notice this. But I ran PAL NES via Composite. Could it be that the console sends 59.940Hz and the LCD is at 60 Hz (when running NTSC)? To get a perfect image use a RGB signal thrue Retrotink/OSSC and then hook up a monitor like, DELL IPS P1917S. I think that is the best way if you are nitpicky. There are some 1600 x 1200 monitors but I haven't seen any that has good response time (wich i s critical)

The way to get rid of those lines on your TV is to on your controller press up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A and Start. You’re welcome.

VGA is Analogue RGB. You don’t need scart for RGb everytime.

I’m curious, would the refresh line be not so noticeable if the screen was 4:3? You did say 5:4, could that be something that makes the refresh stand out? I’m a carpenter, not an electronics guy

If you are looking for a remote for that TV you can put the model number into eBay or Amazon and should be able to find a remote for that TV. It isn't a universal it is like the factory original.

Your syn is off between your nes and tv.happens to my keg emulator. I jave to change the prerendering cpu graphic holds to 1 even if i have perfect 60 to 60 refresh match and vsyn on.I keep my vsyn and tripple buffering off on everything because my stuff are matched to my tv.

It looks like it is screen tearing, that u get in pc games when the frame rate is not jiving with the refresh rate of the monitor. But I don’t understand why that would be happening between the snes and the monitor. 🤔

Could the issue be something to do with monitor scaler frame buffer. Similar to the single buffer mode on the analogue products which causes a screen tear every several seconds. Could be wrong. Just seems very similar to that.
@darthwiizius
@darthwiizius Год назад
I wondered that too, LCDs use fixed resolutions and it may be an incompatibility with the low resolution and the scaler chip forcing a periodic resync or loss or sync with the screen. Could even be an interlacing issue exacerbating the issue.

It's insane that certain people think CRTs are worth a ton of money. I have no doubt certain ones are but I just looked on Facebook and saw a bunch for under 50$. They aren't expensive unless your buying from someone who "knows what they have"

Better off with S-video enabled 27in Magnavox or RCA made CRT tubeTV from 2004 , , since you need it in corner , , should fit nice and be compatible with your lightgun games such as Genesis Lethal Enforcers-2 Gun Fighters , , ,😎👍👍
