The additions you made (crown guards, moving the power reserve and a GMT hand) really works on the piece and changes the character so much, but does not overdo it! Great ideas as always and great presentation!
@alvais
@alvais 5 лет назад
On the contrary, all those possible additions make the dial feel too busy in my opinion. Moving the power reserve to the rear like a Grand Seiko and replacing it with a "9" on the dial would be nice but also not necessary. I love the North Flag as is.

Great video. Finally a reviewer that discuss in detail why this underrated masterpiece is well thought, developed and produced. This is my week-end watch with one of my favorite complications: the very useful power reserve that helps with rotation and inform how much the watch really need to be manually wound (I know automatics has a protection against over-winding, but for me is reassuring nevertheless). The still is sportive, fresh but goes also very well slight formal attire (I take it for work some time and it looks good). Thanks for the video.

Thank you Miguel. I have always tried to bring a twist to the usual format and honing in on the designs of watches brings forward a whole new meaning behind why approaches were taken. I think I mentioned that it would make a perfect weekend watch? Love it. Perfect for a weekly rotation and just as good for anything you throw at it. Thank you so much for the comment, man. Continue wearing your North Flag in good health!

Thanks for your review of the North Flag! The North Flag is the only Tudor I own and I enjoy that it is utterly unlike anything else in the modern Rolex/Tudor catalogue. I think the North Flag is unloved by some because it’s not a black bay, a series that is so derivative that they do nothing for me. The North Flag is a go to informal weekend watch for me. Thanks again for another marvelous review!
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy 5 лет назад
Absolutely. It's a marmite watch (not belonging to any of the usual Heritage pieces) But I have a strong feeling that it's going to become collectable one day (especially with the in-house movement and all of the trimmings) Thank you for the comment, Jeffrey! Greatly appreciated. Enjoy wearing your North Flag in good health

Wonderful presentation of Tudor adventure watches, makes me put them near top of my list of watches to own. Especially if they incorporate your suggested crown guards and revised placement of the power reserve indicator. As for the GMT hand, I would suggest an alternative option....a black hand with a red tip....to make the GMT function unobtrusive and thereby not clutter the clear bold and highly legible dial/hand design. Great video.

My favourite Tudor watch. I have also thought about a GMT function, and just a time only format with three & nine replacing date & power reserve. One last touch, a crown, as used on Black Bays, with a black insert between case and crown to match the bezel insert, but doing so may take away The North Flag’s identity? As always, I. D. Guy, a good and different type of review to the norm, thanks.

I don’t care for the North Flag, but think the Black-Bay 32, 36, & 41 in Blue or Black Dials are very cool. 150m waterproof, a size for everyone, and all for $3k or less. I’ve just recently fallen in love with it and think that your ideas for the dial modifications and crown guards are perfect. I also think that this case and bezel are incredible and that this could be Tudor’s icon that defines their brand. Their Royal Oak if you will. I see chronograph variants as well and possibly even some humorous editions since it is a modern and informal watch, I can envision a limited edition Silberstein or a falling numbers dial. This is Tudor’s emergence. A Royal Oak, Nautilus, Oversees like watch though younger in spirit in a segment where that watch hadn’t existed. Grab the baton and run Tudor.
@Thomas_Burnett

I don’t like the power reserve indicator much. Especially at 9 o’clock. Your redesign placing it between 7 and 8 o’clock makes it a bit easier on the eye. The addition of crown guards also looks like an improvement. Maybe move the date window between 4 and 5 o’clock and you have a quarter Arabic dial which would look great. To be honest I wouldn’t really opt for the North Flag because the Heritage Ranger that you showed would be the one I’d go for. Another great video my friend. Looking forward to seeing the next one. ✊

👍’s - an interesting review. I’ve always been drawn to this model - great aesthetics, legibility and pop of yellow. As it’s now discontinued I rang/emailed Tudor AD’s all over the UK hoping to find one still in stock. Eventually I found a new one on the bracelet - an unexpected bonus was a 15% discount when the AD owner noticed a tiny mark on the bezel 👍🙂

I came that close to buying this watch. It's just off-beat enough, and frankly the weirdness appealed to me. Ultimately the deal breaker was the integrated bracelet requiring one to use proprietary strap/bracelet. A true explorers' watch should have the ability to fit a nato, either out of preference or necessity. Granted I don't see myself trekking across Greenland anytime soon, much less with wearing a multi-thousand pound watch in the process, LOL

I think the North Flag is fine as it is. I have too many watches, so my NF hadn't seen the light of day for too long, so a few days ago I took it out of storage and will now give it the extended wear that it deserves. I wholeheartedly agree with your design concepts for the north flag....I like how those ideas transform the watch. I would prefer it with the changes you suggest. in its current state , it doesn't excite me as much The Ranger II I feel the bezel picks up on the minute markers and caries the theme but I feel it does look too chunky and out of place..a smooth bezel would have been a nice choice. My heart lies with the vintage 34mm tudor ranger - no date simple, classic and just different enough to add it to the explorer collection... The market for them is a bit of a minefield. and prices are getting up there excellent video as always..thank you!

Somehow I can't help being reminded of certain Tissot models that I didn't like to begin with. I think it's the black and yellow color combination mostly, probably also the font of the numerals. The North Flag looks great , it won't look dated because it's a good example of form following function and when that design principle is followed you get a sense of rigntness to the piece , it doesn't mean that it must be minimalist it means that everything in the design serves a purpose and that creates as sense of visual satisfaction .

Great review and I generally like your suggested design changes with the exception of the crown guards. I much prefer the design without them and to be honest, how often have you ever needed them? I've never caught the crown or damaged it on any watch in half a century. Granted if you have an over sized crown like on a Panerai some sort of protection might be necessary but even then it's more design chic than necessity I feel. For me where the design of this watch really falls down (and is a deal breaker for me) is the integrated strap/bracelet design. that's really 1970s and prevents the owner from just changing out the strap to something they like over the stock offering. In this respect, despite really liking the watch, I'd prefer the Ranger. I know others might not agree (that's what makes the world go around) but that's just my take.

Wish they kept the 9 drop the power reserve and (like what you said) add a GMT . Maybe Orange or green would have been better (the yellow makes it look like a toy )

Additions look like a ball watch....bit too busy tho usefull. I think Tudor should leave as is. Cleaner pure design

Hahaha! Very accurate (I did go crazy in a few places) but cleanliness always wins at the end of the day. Thank you for the comment!

Could you please give some input why Tudor Hydronaut is considered a failure despite the name brand?

The case and bracelet look quite nice together. As for the rest ... I just don't know.

It is very unconventional (especially when looking at Tudors lineup) but it definitely isn't a watch for everyone. Thank you for the comment, Blaine!

How "practical" can a power reserve indicator be on an automatic watch?
@imranchowdhury4972
@imranchowdhury4972 5 лет назад
Ranger looks best the current model with power reserve at 9 o'clock without the crown guards. Leather gives a rough look a truly sports watch.

I do not agree with you on the crown guards.

i must say, that fluted bezel does not work at all with a tool watch aesthetic 2:29

Someone in the design department must have had an off day (or maybe someone from a different department decided to be a designer for a day) I cannot fathom who thought that was a good idea haha! Thanks for the comment, Zak

Not trying to start drama here, but you got a bit of a callout for being snarky from scottishwatches in their latest podcast #70

A power reserve indicator in fact is useless on an automatic timepiece
@bmwofboganville456

Good point. It's fun to look at though - do any other automatics have a power reserve indicator?
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy 5 лет назад
Its interesting. I've had a few comments about how this watch is a weekend piece for some (and they always keep the watch wound by judging the reserve) But it is a strange thing to have on an automatic watch, no doubt. Thank you for the comment, man!

It would be perfect if Tudor ditched the complications and added the 3 and 9 to the watch.
