Dhru sat down with Dr. Richard Johnson to talk about his team’s discovery of the fructose-powered survival switch-a metabolic pathway that animals in nature turn on and off as needed, but that our modern diet has permanently fixed in the on position, becoming a fat switch-and how it has revolutionized the way we think about why we gain weight.
Dr. Richard Johnson is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver and has been a practicing physician and clinical scientist for over 25 years. He is internationally recognized for his seminal work on the role of sugar and its component fructose, in obesity and diabetes. His work has also suggested a fundamental role for uric acid (which is generated during fructose metabolism) in metabolic syndrome.
Dr. Johnson is a prolific scientist with research that has been funded by the National Institute of Health since the 1980s. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has published over 700 papers, lectured in over 45 countries, and is a highly cited scientist. He previously authored The Sugar Fix with Timothy Gower in 2008, and The Fat Switch in 2012. His new book is entitled Nature Wants Us to Be Fat and was published on February 8, 2022.

Very valuable presentation by Dr. Johnson. However, interviewer interrupted too much throughout the interview.

Slow down Dhru. Let the doctor finish his thoughts.

My thoughts too, the content of this interview was excellent however it was drawn out by Dhru’s need to interrupt and paraphrase. Dr. Johnson explained everything clearly. I personally did not need Dhru to paraphrase the information.

Almost completely unwatcheable because of this. I persisted because I wanted to hear the doctor, he has such great info. Too many hosts try to compete with the experts they have on their show.

Avoid all processed foods , sugar, juices, and smoothies. In other words ... eat Paleo or Mediterranean. Google eat wild. .. to find local grass fed meat . Exercise .

So does Mark Sisson. He was an ultra endurance runner, looked great on the outside, was on fitness magazine covers, and was falling apart on the inside. Had so much pain due to arthritis and had to look for a bathroom everywhere he went due to IBS.

Consuming fruit or not depends on whether it's a good fit for each person. Does it encourage snacking and possibly replace a meal? Can it be moderated? Does it trigger binging or other behavior? Does it contribute to weight gain? Does it get you to your goal? Just because some fruits may be healthier doesn't mean they should be eaten? It depends. Eat with caution.

I got tricked with organic dark chocolate covered dried figs and organic dried pineapple slices bc I thought the fiber, enzymes and polyphenols were good for me. 😞

If you have a propensity to form kidney stones, 500 mg. of Vitamin C twice a day could be a problem because of the in vivo conversion of ascorbate to oxalate. Ask me how I know…………

Is apple juice concentrate (they use it to sweeten juices that are labeled “no sugar added “) actually a high fructose sweetener?

This is fascinating information! However I have a sincere question. How can for instance some people groups eat lots of white rice and still stay slim? Thanks for helping me to understand. I want to get a CGM and start making changes to lower starchy carbs and also make sure I’m eating whole fruit in moderation.

God, gave us fruit ripe in late summer. We are meant to eat it to put weight on us, to prepare us for winter. Just once a year. Now we have it year round???

I heard insulin is not triggered by fructose so is this also a benefit?
@MADDLADO1
@MADDLADO1 2 месяца назад
Fructos does trigger insulin, because it's percieved exactly the same way by the brain, and must be procesessed by the liver. Fructose is half sucrose.
