@@allisterfiend_2112 I figured that was the case. Remember the tall posters? I had allister on the back of the door of my bedroom. He was a combination of each band member as I'm sure you know. He didn't last long, I think they might have been trying to copy a couple other bands we know... Eddie from Maiden for example. I'm a 1971 model so I was in my prime when they launched on the scene. I've seen so many reactors have that surprise recognition that the musician they thought originated a song didn't, especially people who've grown up on hiphop and who don't fully realize the implications of rap/hiphop being made up of "samples," bits of other people's songs cobbled together to be rapped over, and sometimes the bits taken are the best-known parts of a song, the chorus or the main riff. People who haven't heard the originals before, no matter how popular the originals once were, just have no idea.

This song, if any by Billy Joel, is the one that equates him with the greats, like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, any of those, from the generation before him. He is very jazz and pop oriented and not just rock and blends it all way. Older generation entertainers were all over the map singing this song. "Just the Way You Are" garnered two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year.

Fun fact about this song: Billy was thinking of doing it as a hard rock number, and his producer said, "No, you need to do it as a bossa nova". They argued for a bit but Billy eventually caved. And the rest is history, it hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Doubt very much a hard rock version would have done the same. For your next Billy Joel, try "The River of Dreams", a gospel-inspired number with an infectious groove. Hard not to dance.

I built the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano Billy Joel used in this song..... My Mother Dorothy Jean Tandle…“Dotty” worked at RIC in early 1964. She did the work on the Beatles guitars. Ten years later…..In the 1974, I worked for “Fender Musical Instruments” in Fullerton California. I made two Fender Rhodes Electric Pianos for John Lennon/Apple Studios. The one used on “Walls and Bridges” “Well if they’re gonna send one, send two cause I’d like one as well” John Lennon ordering a Fender Rhodes Electric Piano at the Apple studios. (Elton John recorded “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” with the same piano) My mother and myself are the only mother/son that both built an instrument for John Lennon. My mother made guitars for many famous Rockers, including the red guitar that was smashed by Peter Townsend of the WHO and is in the Rock HOF. Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney (left-handed 1964 4001S FG Rickenbacker bass) , John Entwistle, George Harrison’s 12 String. Roger McGuinn 12 string and many others. I have built pianos for “You name it” just about everyone IE: “Pink Floyd” on “Dark Side Of The Moon” It is our little contribution to Classic Rock. I’m very proud of that fact.

Billy Joel is another iconic, American songwriter. He’s up there with the best of them anywhere. He was one of the very first artists Russia allowed to play there in the spirit of openness which was a new policy to the outside in the late 80’s. 87 to be exact, I believe. They had never allowed an American “Rock” band to play there before. He had fans in their government I’m sure. Anyway, it’s an excellent documentary/performance film of this special set of concerts. It’s called, BILLY JOEL: A Matter of Trust - the Bridge to Russia. I highly recommend it because of the excellent performance and the total uniqueness of this even happening. Just a few years prior, this would never, ever have been a possibly in anyone’s mind, much less the Russians! So, it’s a groundbreaking musical ambassadorship. Billy handles it like the Boss he is. It’s a great watch and listen. Trust me on this, it’s fantastic! That’s the great thing about music, it crosses borders easily. That’s why the Russians were afraid of this, they knew they wouldn’t be able to stop the power of this type of music. The people would be that much less easier to control. Isn’t that wild? Oh No! No American Rock! The people will go nuts on us! And they knew it. How cool is that?

He wrote those words straight from his heart that's why they are felt so deeply. I love it when you feel the same things as me when I hear you speaking about one of my favourite songs and possibly my favourite billy joel song. The sax solo is to die for. It seems that every note the sax plays is just perfect and harmonizes perfectly with the words and then this free flow jazzy runs so effortless. What a master on that instrument and how deeply he feels that song. In ranking the best sax solo in pop and rock music I think that would be number one. Another favourite billy joel song of mine that I love so much maybe even better than that one maybe my favourite billy joel song is: all about soul. Again the simplicity of the words and he sings that so passionately. It's impossible for me not to feel his soul. He gives his all his very best in that song. He's such a great soul singer. Quite some time ago, I heard someone say or I read an article, I don't recall which, but they hated this song because of the exact line you said was your favorite. "I don't want clever conversation, I never want to work that hard. I just want someone I can talk to, I love you just the way you are." They hated it because they felt that Billy was saying he didn't want a smart woman/partner. I remember being dumbfounded and I'm absolutely sure that they just misinterpreted it or took it out of context. It's not a matter of how intelligent the conversation is, it's having to be witty or "on" all the time that would be considered "clever," imo, rather than just a genuine conversation where you're not trying to impress anyone. I love this song, though. Being able to be in a relationship where you don't have to change yourself or always try too hard is a wonderful thing. That's what we want, right? Someone who will love us for who we are? That's goals, there.

Happy belated birthday Harri!! From one October baby to another! Many years ago, had a local radio station dedicate this song to my first wife, shortly after we married. Great song! Billy Joel is a true classic icon.

He wrote this for his 1st of 4 wives.I saw an interview with Fareed Zakaria. Fareed was thrilled as he was on the way to Billys Florida home . Billy told the stories of the meaning of songs he wrote who he wrote them for and reasons for other songs. Hes 67 married with 2 little girls 4 & 6. Alexa is older than his wife.

Happy Birthday Harri. Billy is one of those artists that made the mid 70's through to the 90's (and beyond) musically bearable. There's hardly a musical style he hasn't written in. Artists release greatest hit compilations all the time, Billy has 3 discs full! There are far too many songs to list, but he's probably written and performed songs for any mood you may be in at any one time. Billy deserves a deep dive and you won't be disappointed by any you come across.

His music is the soundtrack to the scenes of our lives and our memories, and his songs have been covered by the likes of Barry White, Barbra Streisand, the Beastie Boys and even The Simpsons.

Billy Joel's song "She's Got A Way" is also wonderful. It should be as iconic as The Beatles "Something." Maybe it is. I love it.

Happy Birthday, young fellow. I hope your day has been awesome. Billy has a big catalogue, with several hits and hidden treasures. "The Stranger", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", are a couple of albums to peruse. Have a great day.

Happy birthday Harri. Billy Joel was one of the best singer/songwriters of the 1970s. Apart from this one, some of my favourite early Joel songs are: Piano Man, My Life, New York State Of Mind, The Stranger, Honesty, Moving Out (Anthony's Song) and (best of the lot) She's Always A Woman.

Biggest Billy fan in the world here, if any of you here would like a deep dive into his brain I suggest an album of his called "An Evening of Questions & Answers (and a little music) He does these intimate q&as from time to time. Sure would love to get into one of these shows. Just got tickets to him with Stevie Nick's. This will be my 25th show.

Seen him in concert twice. Once in Melbourne, Australia and once at Wembley stadium in London. The Melbourne concert was my wife’s favourite of all time so we were so lucky when we planned a trip to the UK that he was playing a once off concert (2019). He ended this song with “and then we got divorced”

Harry, I really appreciate that you look things up when you have a question like that. You could of course just ask someone to answer in the comments. That’s fine too, but this way we got to see you react to learning the answer.
