Great point. I realized there were two user types for my portfolio. A recruiter and a hiring manager. So my portfolio is designed to move through that process of hiring

I know my lack of experience in the UX research side and leading a team so I decided to quit my previous job due to no career progression and lack of support from the upper management. Now I joined a new company where I am getting experience in leading a small team and learning the UX research side.

A hiring manager can always tell from resume, portfolio case study depth and appropriate UX methods used etc. there are a combination of factors that tell how experienced the candidate is even if they don't list it out. For example, I was revieweing this senior portfolio and it was awesome, they had over 7 years of commercial experience in their resume for a great brand... but the case studies seemed quite basic - no complex apps or BIG problems solved. So I had a hunch that they might be on a lower end of senior role. In the interviews it was clear that the person could be a strong midweight because they did indeed focused on UI/UX instead of UX in majority of their career. For juniors though I always recommend to not bullshit as hiring managers will look for potential more than technical proof of skills. The portfolio needs to speak for you and show how quick you can develop

How do you dig deep and explain your process without being too wordy? This is my biggest problem

Hey, from storytelling perspective you should check Minto's pyramid. For the process talking about double diamond, the divergent and convergent approach and highlighting key UX areas such as user research activities, definition, ideation... etc. are good. You don't want to spend more than 2-3 mins on any explanation though so keeping things succinct and allowing for probing Qs is key

Your videos are really insightful and interesting, thank you. I'm currently on a boot-camp course and looking to make a career change to UX. I'm currently working as a teacher and I can see lots of obviously transferable skills from my current job but would anyone hiring make those links? Can I only break into UX if I have past UX experience?

You can break into UX, but you will need evidence (portfolio) that you can UX things. Even for entry-level positions, you need to know the theory (Bootcamp can be a good first step) by heart, but also have practiced it enough to be able to contribute. That's why a lot of job ads will need 1-3 years of experience for junior roles - you must collect that experience by doing side gigs, passion projects, and applying UX to solve issues for other people. Ultimately it will come down to your portfolio, as the hiring managers would look for potential.

Thank you! This is a video I should’ve watched before I created my UX case study pages! I had misunderstandings. I thought a case study should be detailed. However, a lot of people complained that there was a lot of text in my case study. So I cut down a lot of things. I have a question. I looked at a lot of UX case studies, and they had very similar processes. Overall. Mine is similar, too. Also, if everything I’ve done should be condensed in a page, how can I stand out among them? How can hiring managers find a good one among them?

All you need to do is to focus on a good storytelling over the details. You can explain the detail in the interviews as needed. As for standing out, the only good way is to use case studies that are relevant to the hiring mangers, industry, etc.

Could you give an example where an impression is made within 20 mins 😗

The impression is probably made withing the first 2minutes, assessment in the next few minutes and decision immediately after. 10 minutes of review means that the portfolio captivated the reviewer (rarely does this happen). 20 minutes of review is a mythical undertaking. Majority of managers will be very busy and might have 20mins in total to review multiple candidates
