This hardy shank is a great way to hold any tool in a hardy hole. So if you're a blacksmith or bladesmith and you have just got your self a blacksmith helper/guillotine tool this is for you. When making hammers or architectural iron work then holding your tooling fast is mega important. This idea will keep your tooling in place and help prevent it moving around.
I will also be showing you how to make some of the basic tools for the blacksmith helper/guillotine tool. I will be making fullers, butchers and set tools.
The blacksmith helper or blacksmith guillotine is a great tool for any workshop and i've set up a kit that you can now get your hands on. This video is a how to build for the kit that I sell on my Etsy.
for a limited time i'm also selling assembled kit on the Etsy painted in the stunning ultramarine blue.
hope you enjoy.
Etsy's gone and I have a new online shop and website.

Great job on the tool Dan. Really a major helper in the shop. It's easy to fabricate a slot for the wedge lockup with just a bit of bar stock for those who don't want to punch . Very helpful video.

Hi Daniel, I am thinking of building a guillotine tool, I am a builder by trade. I have seen several BS helpers on other channels, I like yours the best, it can be used for slitting with open ends. The tooling is only limited by your imagination. Keep up the good work.

Ahaa!! So that’s the Hardy lock trickery.....nicely done Dan, a very elegant and clever solution. You know it’s a pretty rare thing to order something on line (or anywhere else for that matter) only to find that the seller has made what you thought you were buying even better than it originally was when it turns up. I am impressed! Now stop decking around and get back to work.......anyone would think you’re busy or something :-)

That’s great to see a forged version of a wedged shank for once. Almost always fabricated. !

I like the way black bear forge used a piece of 1/4” x1” and bent it into a u shape then weld it to the bottom of the guilitine tool and that creates the slot for the wedge which is what I used for my guillatine tool

The shank is a great idea. I made a helper very similar some time back. The dies are mild steel and I've found the hammering was distorting the hammer end. I've purchased some case hardening rods and was gooing to

And to continue... Going to try that. But also wondering what you used for your dies?

For the fuller's I noticed you used recycled forklift material but what else could be used for the fuller stock? And would it be wrong to radius the plates into a fuller from their current state?

hello . I need your advice. My hardy hole isnt like yours, it is not really deep and then it do a corner and goes out by one of the side of the anvil. My question is, can i forge the tool handle by puting the bar in this hole and strike, so it gonna follow the hardy hole tunnel and so make a corner , or should i stick to a straight but then very short handle ? ( about 4centimetres deep before it does the corner) Thanks for your time and your vidéos

Good question with out seeing it I would say just make it as long as you can. I think following the shape might get stuck. If you want a better answer uses the email below and send me a picture.

I know it's probably blasphemy, but an end mill would have made quick work of the slot in the Hardy stem.

On my anvils, this square hole leads to the side, so not possible to make a tool like that. I don't know what a hole sticking out on the side can be used for! You should use a left turn to turn the taps. If you don't have one, I sell the ones I make in my Etsy store😉
