A Solo Backpacker's Kitchen / Mess Kit

This is my kitchen setup for when I go on solo backcountry trips. That includes my pot and pan, soap, handkerchief and other items I cover in the video. I've also put in a little review of the Sea To Summit X-Bowl and X-Cup.
By the way, I just want to be clear that any reviews I do are my personal tastes and preferences. I just like to mention those responsible for making the gear I like. I have no affiliations with any companies that would sway my opinion.

Can't wait to see your videos this summer. A friend and myself came across your videos last summer when we were researching our first ever Algonquin hike. We went 4 days in the back country and used your video (mostly) to make some bannock. This summer we're planning a few more trips, I was thinking about filming it too! Keep up the great work, and like I said can't wait to see what you do this summer. Any hints as to what you have planned this summer?

I picked up a similar bowl and cup at REI but also added on the plate that I find very useful. The plate would be to large to fit inside your setup though. I find the plate is nice that I can use it as somewhat of a cutting board. The sides flip up the same way to help keep the food on the plate. It might help you out while cutting your Bannock bread.

It's a rockin' set for sure. I bought a spare set for when my originals wear out but haven't had to touch it. The originals are staying as non-stick as ever. Though I'm using new gear and trying new pots the GSI Hard Anodized Extreme still come highly recommended. Thanks for tuning in and taking the time to write. Have a great season.

Mine has held up great too. except for the pot holder. i find that because it is made of aluminum the lock mechanism has worn to the point that it bends and no longer holds tight.

@mrschoolbusman So far I've recorded videos on: making the pot cozies, dehydrating, putting a patina on a knife, wood splitting, more knots and an 8 day solo trip as well as other vids I'm forgetting. Lots of editing to do so it could take a little time to get through the editing - especially for the 8 days solo where I need to edit through 11 hours of video.

@agaul Yes, the 500ml widemouth nalgene container has been replaces by the xbowl and xcup. I used them for another season and like them as much now as I did when I first started using them. Excellent products.

Great video, glad to see you back on RU-vid again. Quick question: did getting the x-summit bowl and cup eliminate your 500ml nalgene bowl, or do you still bring that but just didn't show in the video?

@MaddyTheGoose A little brush will do the same job but is much cleanlier than a sponge. Just my 2c and no big deal either way...

@Arendseye7 That's the GSI Hard Anodized Extreme 1L pot I use when soloing. I also have a larger one for multi-person trips. You can see all of my gear on the MaddyTheGoose web site under 'Gear' then follow the 'The Complete Gear List' link. I believe this kit has since been replaced by the Bugaboo set, basically the same but not hard anodized. You can hover still find some of these on the onlines stores, I recently bought a spare set.
@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 14 лет назад
@rookthepagan I'm having the same problem actually. I'd like to get a backup set but GSI has discontinued the cookset I'm using (GSI Hard Anodized Extreme). The hard anodized is a big feature since it distributes the heat evenly and is a very good non-stick material. Personally, I don't know why every outdoor cookset doesn't have a lid that doubles as a frying pan. The closest thing I can find is the GSI Bugaboo set but it only has one frying pan lid and only for the 2L pot.

@IrishProductionsND So far so good with the bowl and cup, time will be the real test. As for the sponge, I hear you. I once thought that as well but then I kind of switched gears. The way I see it, every time I use my pot, I'm pretty much always boiling water for at least some part of the meal so I do it first. Then I dip my spork in for a bit and whatever else I want to sanitize. Perhaps not the most bullet proof but it's enough to ease my mind and so far so good... no lost lunches yet :)

I have been going nuts looking for a pot like yours. Where can I find one that has a lid like your for frying the bannock? Please advise. I'll keep my eyes out too. grrrr. It looks so good that bannock bread. I was hoping this video would have told me the maker and such. Help

Hope you got the sea to summit x-pot.... It will go great with your cup and bowl and will be way more compact than your current pot..... It's pretty awesome... Hope you check it out
@MaddyTheGoose

Corey Ryan I've seen the x-pot but am not biting at the bit to get it. I like having the solid metal pots with a lid that works as a pan. A pot also works well as a container for other kitchen stuff. It does look like a cool innovation though. I wouldn't be surprised if I give it a shot at some point.

This video was put together pretty good. Informative and to the point. I see a lot of gear videos that are put together very sloppy and unwatchable. My suggestion, lose the Papyrus font. I almost didn't watch it, because of that.

@EastTNSurvivalist Thanks for letting me know. It's currently on Google Sites which can go down every now and again, but it's generally pretty good. I'm in the process of writing the site over from scratch so stay tuned. Also, if you don't put the "w w w" in front of the site name it will give you a 404. Not sure what's going on with it but since I'm redoing the site anyhow I haven't took too much time to investigate. Thanks again.

It's called reflectix and is at the hardware store. It comes in a roll... www.homedepot.com/p/Reflectix-4-ft-x-25-ft-Double-Reflective-Insulation-BP48025/100052556

Go to a real hardware store, Home Hardware and buy it. Item # 5541-880. Call your local store and give them that SKU #. Never give Home Depot your money. It's like buying McDonalds burgers made in China.
