You know that would fit. Given what type of murderous monster Joffery was. He could legitimately come up with something like this. But get too drunk to remember it or think that he's safe from the poison. Due to not eating the lemon cream directly. Its unlikely we will ever know for certain. But I adore your idea just for the sheer lols of it.

My pet theory is that Joff's wine goblet was so comically large, and so many people hated him, that as many as seven people poisoned him separately. It would be amusing if we learn in a series of later chapters that seven or more people believe they alone killed Joffrey, and that wine cup could have killed a giant.

I just realized, Littlefinger has beem trying to get rid of Tyrion since the very beginning. First blaming him for owning the valyrian steel dagger, and then with how obsessed Lysa Tully was with killing him without a fair trial, and we later find out that Lysa wouldn't do anything that risky unless she had the blessing of Littlefinger. She is terrified of the lanisters, but she is very quick to call for his death. There must be another reason for Littlefinger wanting Tyrion dead.

Thinking about it, it's pretty obvious that Quaithe, who is really Ashara Dayne who is really Sheira Seastar who is really Melisandre, hired a faceless man, Jaqen H'ghar (who is really Syrio Forel, Mance Rayder, and Rhaegar Targaryen) to cause instability in Westeros to make way for Patchface to take his rightful place as the Prince That Was Promised, also known as the Kwizatz Haderach to the Fremen of Asshai, or The One to those mysterious freed men from the hidden city of Zion deep beneath the Land of Always Winter. Quaithe, whom is *really* Ariana Dumbledore (whose incredibly powerful obscurus tore through the fabric of reality, becoming trapped in a dimension of her own making), made these preparations a thousand years before Robert's Rebellion. After receiving a vision of the future from her lover, Morpheus, known to muggles simply as 'The Sandman', Quaithe set into motion a series of events that would change not only the world of Ice and Fire, but all worlds connected by Yggrasil; Westeros, Arrakis, Earth, the Dark Dimension, Asgard, Earth 52... none of them will be spared.

I would assume, even tho Olenna is worried for Magaerys well-being, she’s also be smart enough to wait with an assassination plot against Joff until after Margaery gets pregnant and until then trust that Margaery is able to control Joff one way or another (it’s the one thing I liked about the show: they actually showed just how shrewd and clever the Tyrell’s are). With Joff dead this early on, they now have to wait until Tommen comes of ages (or at least old enough to consummate the marriage) and that just can’t be in Olenna‘s interest.
@Sunshine-is_here_to_stay
@Sunshine-is_here_to_stay 2 месяца назад
Would you trust your daughter with Joffrey?? No way. The smart way is for them to marry but never consummate the marriage. And Protocol says that the next son will be in line to fulfill the marriage agreement. Tommen can be trusted around your daughter. Its the one safe decision for oleanna to make regarding her granddaughter Margaery.

If in fact it turns out that Tyrion was the real target when everyone assumes it was Joffrey, and Belwas was the real target when everyone assumes it was Dani, that would actually be a nice little thematic consistency. Dani and Joffrey are assumed to be the targets because they're the monarch--the highest rank, the "most important"--therefore everything must be about them, right? Ignoring all the various intricate motivations and agendas involving "lesser" people around them. Overlooking "lesser" people--whether it be smaller houses, women, dwarfs, younger siblings, or the 'small folk' themselves--is a running theme throughout all of the books, so this actually would be perfectly in keeping with that idea.

This is the first and only explanation of the purple wedding that actually makes sense to me. I could never get past why Olenna needed to involve Sansa at all. Strictly speaking, Shae didn't need to be a part of the scheme. Highborn ladies like Sansa don't do their own hair and garments before big events. Even if Olenna hadn't touched the hairnet Sansa would have remembered her maid arranging her hair that afternoon.

Re-reding a Storm of Swords and rewatching this video, something still surprises me. When Sansa and Tyrion are discussing with the QoT, at the same moment she adjusts Sansa's hairnet, she asks Sansa if she wants to come at Highgarden with her after the wedding, but Sansa answers that her place is near Tyrion, at King's Landing. I've always wondering if maybe the QoT knew somehow that Tyrion would get poisoned at the feast, and that was the reason of her asking Sansa to join her. Have you ever thought about it ? :D Anyway, great video and great work, thank you for it:>.

I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that Cersei is lying to herself. It's pretty obvious that she killed her friend Melara some time after visiting Maggy the Frog, and each time we hear of it, Cersei blames the girl for her own death a little more. It's certainly possible that Cersei is once again transferring blame off of herself and dumping it on Tyrion because he was the one that was supposed to die. Even so, I wouldn't be suprised if it was just Littlefinger trying to kill Tyrion again.

Ok I'm just going to say it. Cersei did poison joffrey. It was the pie that was poisoned. As joffrey was coughing and gagging he said that it was the pie he was choking on. Littlefinger was telling the truth and had planned on Olena Tyrell poisoning Joffrey later on in the feast, perhaps when people were more drunk, but Cersei had planned on killing Tyrion and joffrey ate his poisoned pie before Olena could poison him herself. Jofrrey drank the wine and got out a few lines with no trouble, it wasn't until he ate Tyrions pie that he began to choke. Everyone in the feast thinks that joffrey choked. That is everyone except Cersei. She knew he was poisoned immediately after his death. Cersei being the narcissist she is will lie to herself as a way to cope as hardly any woman could live with herself knowing she killed her own son by accident. Lastly George Martin said the strangler was used to make it look like he choked. You cant choke on wine, but you can choke on pie. Case closed.

It must have been the pie no matter who did it. As we read in A Clash of Kings, when the meister tried to poison Melisandra he was immediately affected. Where as Joffrey drinks deep and keeps going with no issues. Only right after he swallows the pie his throat starts collapsing just like with the aforementioned meister. It always seemed logical to me that the hairnet was crooked because someone removed the poison already. So before our beloved queen of thorns straightened it.

Purple wedding - great video but there is one big open question on the "tyrion as littlefingers target" theory. If Tyrion got poisoned, how could Dontos flee with Sansa? If Tyrion choked all eyes would be on that side of the table. Sansa could not have slipped away.

Exactly plus the Ghost of High Heart says " I dreamt of a maid at a feast with purple serpents in her hair, dripping venom from their fangs" which is meant to indicated Sansa having the poison on her. Smuggling in poison on a hairnet to kill a King might not be the smartest assassination plan, but as Preston pointed out in his Littlefinger Science Mistake Update "Our author is a hippy writer" so we have to put real world feasibility aside and go with fantasy improbability instead.
@BattyButtercup
@BattyButtercup 4 года назад
Dontos as false hope for Sansa to resign her to Littlefinger's control &/or a fallback plot set up as a catch-all means of getting Sansa to Baelish. alternatively, the KETTLEBLACK was supposed to get Sansa to Littlefinger but Dontos got there first. Dontos was then adapted into the plan because Sansa trusted him & killed to ensure she didn't question anything. Olenna's adjustment of Sansa's hairnet + magic stuff convinces me that it held poison. the poison in the pie could have come from the net or both it AND Tyrion's pie could have been poisoned independently. i am more inclined to thinking hairnet -> server -> pie, however. Olenna's adjusting the net was likely her confirming a suspicion that she then warned Margaery of (thus the bride's repeated efforts at getting Joffrey AWAY from Sansa's end of the dais). that Olenna did not walk up to a Kingsguard and go "yo, that Stark girl got shady hair accessories" is entirely justified: it would interrupt the wedding (bad), draw attention to herself (bad), potentially endanger Sansa (distasteful), or endanger her family to Littlefinger or Cersei (VERY BAD) for thwarting their scheme. relying on poison already present in Tyrion's pie seems risky: its placement could change at any time and Sansa (or Joffrey, as it happened) could end up eating it by mistake. that leads me to thinking that the pie/lemon cream was not pre-poisoned but during one of the Distractions. Servant X was to wait for the right moment to slip poison (via Sansa's hairnet or in some lemon cream spread). while Sansa only noticed her hair being adjusted ONCE, she (and Tyrion) was sufficiently distracted & out of the way (end of the dais) for any decent pickpocket to nab some poison without realising someone had brushed against her intentionally.

@@squattingheads I thought that was from when Tyrion had Pycelle arrested in ACoK. He stole some poison to make Cersei unable to discuss terms with the Starks. Pycelle then used the half-truth against Tyrion in court. Tyrion arguing he _only_ stole the poison to use on the queen would only make things worse, so Pycelle rubbed as much salt in the wound as possible. I doubt Pycelle even had Strangler on hand, but who would be able to confirm that? The other maesters are more likely to conspire together.

As always, Preston, a high quality argument. I'm for the Cersei theory, however. I'm not sure where I saw it, but I heard an argument about why Cersei never thinks of it, or blames herself, etc. While you mention "Tyler Durden, Jekyll & Hyde" stuff, I think the explanation I heard doesn't require that. It's completely in Cersei's character to blame others for her mistakes. Nothing is ever her fault. She constantly blames her victims. I don't remember specific names and things, but she blames her childhood friend for having to kill her with regards to the Maggy the Frog prophecy, she blames the people she gives to Qyburn, saying they "made" her do it. In her mind, it's Tyrion's fault, because he didn't eat the pie that was meant for him. If he had only eaten the pie, Joff would be alive. Therefore, Tyrion killed him.

When, relative to the purple wedding, is Aria told that poison is a poor choice for assassination because it can hit the wrong target? My sense of timeline is all confused, but my point is that we are directly introduced to this idea by the author. He is saying it to our face. I think you are right that the target was Tyrion, but I don't totally rule out Cersie. When she thinks to herself that "Tyrion killed Jof", she could mean that he killed him by not eating the pie. But you would think she would have stopped him. Now, I haven't re-read the books in a long time, so I would have to go over all of her thoughts about him, but the line you show doesn't preclude it from being her.

You're half right on this I reckon. I can see littlefinger scheming with Olenna to kill Tyrion, thru his KL agents (once Tyrion and Sansa were wed and the initial marriage to Willas was foiled) .. with the added caveat that Littlefinger never intended to give them Sansa, he probably always planned to steal her. Making the Tyrells believe he'd whisk her off to highgarden then betraying them would be some classic Baelish the Bard shit
@pushista9322

And how about this sweet moment Sansa tells Dontos about Wyllas and all the fandom goes nuts with victim blaming once again. And then Martin gives us one little detail, how at Sansa and Tyrion's wedding Margaery's ladies turn away from Sansa as if they don't know her. And Sansa thinks bitterly: "My friends". Which means their usual manner with her was visibly friendly and close, which would have never gone unnoticed by Littlefinger. So Dontos or not, Baelish would have known about the Wyllas plan anyway, and whatever Sansa did would never change her fate.
@dino6912
@dino6912 5 лет назад
But why would Cersei try to poison Tyrion at a public event? It probably puts Joffrey in danger by being in close proximity to the poison. Baelish makes more sense. He failed but saw an opportunity to create another conspiracy theory. Blame the Tyrells. Chaos is a ladder.

One thing to add: LF definitely had a different plan going on as well - he needed to get Sansa out of Kingslanding. And to do that he needed a distraction. And he clearly had Dontos give the hairnet to Sansa, so while the target might be Tyrion rather than Joff, LF was definitely in on it.

When I was putting together my own analysis of this event, I noticed something you missed - Pycelle seems to know Joffrey is poisoned before anyone else does. While everyone else is offering suggestions for how to help a choking person, Pycelle - who could actually have useful information on the subject, is instead demanding that someone help him get his potions. Why? Because he knows that Joffrey has taken the Strangler, and he has an antidote for it in his box of poisons. This led me to the probable conclusion that Pycelle was in on the murder with Littlefinger, and it's likely that it was his strangler that was used. Pycelle being involved would go a long way towards explaining why he distances himself from Cersei in AFFC - he's so guilty about his role in Joffrey's death that he slinks away to the Tyrells. Also, it's impossible to avoid the conclusion that the poison is in the pie - we see the poison instantaneously take effect with a tiny sip of wine is taken, but Joffrey takes a long drink and has no symptoms, but as you say, his throat immediately gets scratchy the moment he swallows some pie.
@BattyButtercup
@BattyButtercup 4 года назад
Pycelle didn't need to be directly involved in the assassination to want to Nope Out from Cersei's notice, post-regicide: if the poison was bought off, stolen from him, or completely unrelated to him, his "negligence" in keeping track of his stores/failing to report them throws suspicion his way. There are several moments where Pycelle Lets Slip his being Actually Competent and his connecting dots to The Strangler at the Purple Wedding is one of them.

Good video. Found some flaws. There are two people we know are actually fond and knowledgeable of poisons around and Littlefinger is not one of them. One is Pycelle and the other one is Oberyn Martell. There's also the faceless men and the "servant man" is literally not given a face in the books. The hair-net theory seems a bit flawed considering it is much easier to poison the lemon cream at the top of the pie instead of carrying the poison around in a very small container.(Which is completely unnecessary as the killer could just easily carry it in their sleeve.) Another interesting thing is that digestable poisons would have a digestion time so neither water nor food would give the instantaneous response given. It would have to be either inhaled or given into the bloodstream to have that quick an effect. So what could cause this "poisoning" then? Well as we know the "Viper" gave Joffrey a "Scorpion brooch" earlier that day.

I think Olenna was the poisoner, trying to kill Tyrion so that Sansa will be available to marry her grandson, as she originally wanted. She hints at this by asking Sansa if she would like to go to Highgarden with her after the wedding. She implies that Tyrion wont be around but plays it off as a joke about him leading an army. As to why Littlefinger would have Dontos fetch Sansa at that same time, I wonder if Littlefinger wasnt involved in the plot but double crossed Olenna to get Sansa for himself. Olenna has more reason to kill Tyrion than Joffrey. Joffrey has just made her granddaughter royalty and until she gives him an heir they need him around to keep her as queen. Assuming that she will get to marry a third king just seems too risky, even if it is possible. Killing Tyrion allows her whatever northern ambitions she wanted earlier, and is less risky besides.

I mean, Cersei trying to kill Tyrion and then blaming him when her plan goes awry is pretty in-character. She blames him for the death of their mother in childbirth, even though that’s obviously crazy. So if Joffrey ate the poisoned pie that was meant for Tyrion, she probably blames Tyrion for “provoking” Joffrey. Let’s be honest here, Cersei is a complete Karen whose children can do no wrong, no matter how illogical it actually is. But in my personal opinion, Joffrey is allergic to lemons.

The things that always got me with why Littlefinger would want to do it 'for the chaos' (ie the standard theory on his motives, assuming he did it) 1) chaos isn't want he wanted at the time - he's somewhat annoyed that Cersei messed the realm up so quickly! 2) Joffrey is the embodiment of chaos - even with Tywin as hand, he's going to be shooting smallfolk from the battlements, abusing Marg (and thus making the alliance holding the realm together weak), etc, etc 3) the Purple Wedding makes Tywin Regent, and the Tyrell-Lannister alliance safe from Joffrey screwing it up. The Iron Throne is stable and dominant until Tywin is killed and Cersei descends into madness. Also, why would Baelish want Sansa as a patsy? Sansa-as-Sansa is such a vital player in Baelish's plans, and now she's wanted for regicide and unable to be her true self. Baelish could have removed her from Kings Landing at any time via the passage from the Godswood, but did so while Goldcloaks were looking for her (OK, she had a little headstart). And the Tyrells were talking of marrying her to Willas - even after the Red Wedding (or even more so after it) she's massively eligible (hence why Tywin marries her to Tyrion). Totally and utterly bizarre!

I have a few problems with this theory. First of all, dont you think it's a bit odd that they changed how it played it out in the show to completely confirm that Olenna did poison Joffery using the poison in Sansa's necklace? If Tyrion was the intended target I don't see why they would change it. Second of all, it seems very strange that out of ALL of the things George could of wrote for Olenna to do when next to Sansa would be to randomly fix her poison filled hairnet. That's a bit on the nose to not be a hint at when the poison is transferred. My guess is that Olenna did poison Joffery's wine and that either during the wedding or before told Margery not to drink from the chalice.

I think what we're told makes perfect sense. You forgot one major thing: Littlefinger is an agent of chaos, he says it himself. He'll cause chaos and involve himself in situations where there seems to be no benefit in him, and manipulate the situation into an outcome that benefits him. Killing Joffrey makes perfect sense here, it once again throws the kingdom into chaos and keeps the situation in a fluid state that he can continue to exploit. And Olenna's role also makes perfect sense. She'll do whatever it takes to secure the future of her house, including murder. Why work with Littlefinger? Because it benefits them both and neither will rat on the other. Why do it herself instead of a lackey? Because, who would suspect a little old lady? And the fewer involved in a conspiracy, the better. Hiring a lackey or a catspaw introduces the risk of betrayal. The more people involved, the less secure the plan is. Just look at what happened with the gunpowder plot. So yes, what we're told makes perfect sense.

"Littlefinger is an agent of chaos" Poor excuse. There's no reason he should trust Dantos to deliver it to Sansa, so Olenna can put it in the goblet so, hopefully, only Joffrey drinks it. There's more chance of the plan going wrong and them being implicated in it then any benefit he would get from chaos. Why would Olenna want Joffrey dead before the marriage is consumated if she wants Margery to be queen? If Joffrey dies she needs to mary Tommen and then wait so he can get her pregnant. That doesn't do anything for her or her house, only complicates things further. Also, you said yourself, Littlefinger is an agent of chaos, that's precisely why she wouldn't trust him. And then you say she put the poison in herself to avoid suspicion and keep the plan simple, without to many people. Did you even read the book? Olenna trusted a drunk lackey, to give a hairnet to a 13 year old girl, and then trusted that she would wear it and that there would be an oportunity to remove the stone and then put it on Joffrey's goblet and then trust random chance that Margery wouldn't drink from his cup after she put the poison in. The two things she did herself were trusting Littlefinger and placing the poison in the cup, some of the most dangerous parts of the plan, since Petyr isn't trustworthy and anyone could've seen her removing the stone and/or putting it in the goblet (this part would definetly make people suspect an old lady). If she wanted Joffrey dead she could've waited a few months until they have a kid and Margery has secured her place as the queen, and then murder Joffrey without so many complications, like trusting Littlefinger, the drunk guy and a teenage girl, and also without the risk of accidentally killing her granddaughter. There's no logical reason to believe the plan was as it is presented to us. Either it happened differently or George did some real shitty writing.

Joffrey already died before the wedding skaters 😤👊👋 the boy at the wedding was just some flea bottom orphan who looked like Joffrey and the Crown Poisoned him

I think he wanted Tyrion to be framed and executed rather than directly kill him. He didn’t think Tyrion would get away

You're certainly correct about things being true on the train wreck of a show being completely different from the books. Ser Barristan and the Blackfish were both killed on the show in ways that wouldn't or couldn't happen in the books, if said books are ever published. Blackish has already escaped Riverrun and Selmy is riding out to battle leading an army, not fighting against some punkass harpies in a back alley.

We need a list of actions by littlefinger that we’re supposed to confuse his enemies. and Time on where he most likely wasn’t where we thought he was

Absolutely best intro to a video ever. Love how it pans around interspersed with snide remarks, and then once you realize what you’re looking at the chorus comes on in all its glory. Great breakdown too, but holy shit did you nail the start.

That intro was hilarious. Keep up the good work Preston.

Really compelling, and doesn't even involve a Glass Candle or moon-powered dream invasion once so it can't be all that tinfoily.

maybe cersei was in denial about the pie being the thing that killed joffrey and she rationalized it the same way she rationalizes ever tragedy in her life. "tyrion did it". cersei has blamed tyrion for things he was not even conscious of doing like killing his mother so him not eating the pie which leads to joffrey eating it, i could see how she would blame tyrion for not unwittingly falling into her trap.

Littlefinger does make sense, but I really like the idea of Cersei though. 1. Her still blaming Tyrion for Joff's death could be her in her descending madness trying to justify the mistake as not her own, Tyrion is to blame because he didn't die like he was meant to. 2. As said the attempt would be happening just after the ashes threat and might fit being a mistake with a hasty plan to try killing him. 3. It would also fit with Cersei being her own downfall and the downfall of all her children, she killed Joff, she may be responsible eventually for Marcella's death and I would love if her actions lead to Tommen taking his own life like on the show. Everything ends up being her own doing, Joff was just the next domino after things like letting Ned be killed, killing Robert or getting Jamie appointed Kingsguard.
