I invested in these in my previous non purposed theater room and before measurements and speaker calibration they made a huge difference turning my room from what sounded like a cathedral hall to something more ear pleasing for music and movies .Fast forward to my current dedicated theater with upgrades all over and I carried over the originals panels plus some clouds and bass tri traps per GIK suggestions.

Those look very sharp. My wife ordered me GIK combo panels with the 3D diffusion for my back walls. Patiently waiting for them to come. I preferred alternating my absorption and diffusion panels. Also, put a panel on the ceiling at the first reflection point. It really opened up the main sound stage. Good video…look forward to the measurements.

Way to go Mike👍. I've had some GIK impressions in my room for sometime now. First take was they immediately made the room to seem much larger that it physical was. Awesome sound and results!! One of the best and comparably least upgrades we did this far. Can't wait for your take on the results of your measurements. I used YPAO and in the end had to manually tweak all the speakers and subs to achieve the optimum sound I was seeking. Hope you enjoy the Impressions as well.✌️

Mike, you will need to redo your mini dsp. You now have a different room. Rerun mini dsp, you won’t regret it. Your low end will increase in detail. Your awesome JTRs will increase detail as well. This was my experience. I can’t believe I waited to treat my room so late in my journey.

When I moved to a new apartment I bought acoustic stuff for about 1000 dollars and that has been one of the best improvements in sound I've ever made. Although much more expensive than DIY but buying manufactured things like GIK makes it way more easier to integrate nice in a living room/home cinema. Looks more clean and aesthetic pleasing, imo.

@@Youthman Will do! I like the design you picked, but I’ll probably do black over beige instead and do 2”- 2’ x 4’ for my walls and either 4” or 6” - 2’ x 2’ or 2’ x 4’ for my back walls…so very similar to what you are doing it seems. I never really considered GIK because I just assumed they were pricey, so I was very happy to see they aren’t pricey at all after watching your video and clicking on the link.

Knowing I don't like the look of Corner bass traps and considering I've got two 8-inch down firing REL subwoofers placed near the corners situated behind my couch Wouldn't it be better for me to get a thick acoustic panel placed a couple of inches away from my back wall! Therefore to hopefully trap the unwanted low-end?

@@Youthman Your redone room should sound quite different with the new panels vs the old. Your old panels were all absorptive while the new are both absorptive and diffusive. Measurements notwithstanding, the "new" room should sound a bit livelier/larger than your old room. And had you had those "slots" (which act as one dimensional - in your case vertical - diffusors) rotated 90 degrees (as Alex had), it might have sounded even larger. I am curious to see the REW results. Decay times and ETC (Energy Time Curves) with old panels, no panels and new panels should be quite interesting. I would expect to see huge differences in impulse response with and without panels.

Great looking panels but as they have a large reflection surface I’d imagine they would be way less effective at absorbing that your home-made ones. You should be able to hear the room sound different? I have ceiling and side wall absorbers and back wall Absorbers and defusers. I’m very happy with my setup and audio quality is greatly improved.
@Youthman

Thanks big guy. Yes these are combo panels which are different then my previous absorption Panels. Hoping to watch a movie this weekend to see how they sound. I’m wondering if I should probably have absorption only in the first reflection point. I’ll have to ask GIK what they recommend

Great timing, I was just about to call them about doing my room, and didn’t want to have to build things myself. I was also looking at the impression series, but mixing (alternating) them in with some custom movie poster printed ones they offer as well, so some absorption, some diffusion. Any suggestions?

I used GIK about a year ago. GIKs website has a tool that will prompt you to answer questions and will also ask to send a video or pics of your room. These are nice. I'm interested to hear your opinion on the difference in sound these give your room. I would think that the cutouts on the panel being horizontal would diffuse sound vertically as opposed to a vertical panel that would diffuse the sound horizontally... good stuff as always!
@MosquitoFreeBackyard
@MosquitoFreeBackyard 3 года назад
That is exactly what they will do - vertical vs horizontal diffusion.
@Youthman
@Youthman 3 года назад
Interesting. Honestly I thought it was mostly for looks. I didn’t realize the direction of the “cutouts” would effect the direction of the dispersion. I assumed the flat surface was the reflection (which is the same regardless of the design of the cutout). I told you I have a lot to learn about acoustics but this is great to know.

Whats good Youthman?! Do you run your LCR' full range? Just curious because I recently did a massive upgrade with REL 3D sound. Everything sounds better! Those JTR mains CAN play full range. Do you run them full range?!
@Youthman
@Youthman 3 года назад
No I run them small with a 60Hz crossover. No need to run them full range when my subs are much more capable and are flat down to 8Hz. My towers wouldn’t offer any benefit of running them full range.
@lightningwaves5436
@lightningwaves5436 3 года назад
@@Youthman That is what YOU think but what happens is you are missing 60hz-5hz on EVERYTHING excluding digital surround sound content and even though you hear better low end from your subs, the sonic signature will not match your mains because they are not being run from your mains' power amp(via a line output converter, or REL'S proprietary technology). In short, you and most home theater enthusiasts are only getting 70% of a real audiophile experience! I hope you look into REL3D one day but it really makes a TON of difference. Peace! Thanks for all the inspiration!

My order was delayed 3 times… I’ll get over the first delay even though they only notified me a week before the ship date. They decided not to notify me about the second delay even after the ship date had been missed (I had to email and ask). After they missed the third date which they called “at the latest”, I emailed and they did not respond. After calling multiple times someone eventually answered and seemed annoyed that I was asking for an update. This call happened a week after their "at the latest" date and I was told it would be another week. I can understand unforeseen delays but covid (which isn’t new) doesn’t stop you from keeping your customers informed about delays. A youtube video does not count.

I ran dual SVS PB16’s for a few years. Very nice subs. JTR however is in a different league in both output and low end extension. For example, my JTR Captivator RS2’s are flat down to 5Hz.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the measurements show the room sounds better WITHOUT any acoustic panels? 😂

I can’t see that happening as I have a slap echo without panels. That I know isn’t good

Never happen. No room treatment in a theater (or 2 channel room) ALWAYS sounds awful. Passive room treatment is the best investment you can make in a listening room. More so than better speakers, processors, amps, etc.

Full absorption is what I had. I’m curious to see how combo panels sound.

Why do you feel combo panels won’t work as well as full absorption? My room previously had no diffusion.

@@Youthman so whats in those panels besides absorption ? Do you use reflection panels too
@Youthman

As shown in the video, the GIK panels have a wooden baffle with slots cut out. Some sound is reflected off the wood, some is absorbed through the slots
