In this video, I am sharing my Valloween reading plans for February. I have so many romantically spooky books to read and hopefully you find some new ones to add to your TBR! 🌹

I can’t wait to watch the Love Witch!! I actually thought it was made in the 1960s until I read interviews with the author and then I saw she published a book so recently. I’m like WAIT how old is this person? 🤣

I have come to terms with the fact that I indeed judge a book by its cover 🤣 Can’t wait for all the folklore!! I also have some movies for Folklore February, too 👻 I want to try out the recent La Llorona movies and see if I like it even though it has terrible reviews lol.

A long time dead is the perfect read for February 🥰 I need to rewatch Crimson Peak, I think that would be a perfect watch this month. Valloween is perfect for gothic literature and vampire stories for sure!

What a great month of reading you have lined up! Potentially, I mean. lol. I've not read any of it. But I too am wanting to get some vampire reads in (carmilla is on my list as well). I'm also very interested in reading Bluebeards Castle. Very intrigued to see how Anna Biller's work comes across in book format. Hope you have an awesome Feb!

Looks like you have a great lineup! I love the covers for The Voice Upstairs & Phantom Mannor. I read Carmilla in high school, but it was so long ago and I don’t remember much.

I have the same Carmilla edition as you❤I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of it. For me, Carmen Maria Machado's editing makes the story that much more interesting. In Reluctant Immortals, I enjoyed the way Gwendolyn Kiste thrust the two "bad" women from Dracula and Jane Eyre into the spotlight and created personalities for them that extend beyond their relationships with the men in the classic novels. I found it empowering to revisit these women with a fresh perpsective. I'll also be reading Bluebeard's Castle, and fitting it into several readathon prompts, too. It looks like your February is going to be amazing! Also, this video looks (and sounds) great, so no worries💘

I’m so glad that you enjoyed Carmilla and Reluctant Immortals, especially since so many people didn’t. 🤪 Especially Releuctant Immortals! I don’t know how much longer I can wait until I crack open Bluebeard’s Castle - it’s probably going to be my first read of February! 👻 Also THANK YOU for your kindness regarding my audio issues. I was so annoyed when I realized it but what can ya do haha.

your edition of carmila is so BEAUTIFUL! I cannot wait for you to read reluctant immortals, i LOVED IT! Patricia wants to cuddle was very quirky and funny. It feels more like a summer read tho but who am i to say that when i read christmas books during the summer holidays 😂

I found Cinderella is Dead randomly on my Libby app! Are people loving it? I hope so because that author and I don’t have a great history 🤣 And I need to keep my lil Frankenstein and bride behind bars or else they just run amok all over the dang place!

@@happyhauntslibrary I'll eye what I have on my shelves for books, to celebrate in Valloween! Because I'm also doing the read your physical TBR challenge. I think I've got a few witchy romance books on my TBR though, so those should work! The good thing about short story collections is, you'll at least enjoy (hopefully) a good many of them!

Glad you're so excited about your future reads. I went into Patricia Wants to Cuddle expecting it to be funnier and/or a more pointed satire about reality TV and it wasn't. And that's entirely on me.

Carmilla is one of my all time favorites! I choose it for research projects/papers every chance I get haha. We need to bring back book covers like Phantom Manor.

@@happyhauntslibrary I'm not sure honestly! I think there's just so much in it, every time I read it it feels like a whole new story. The first time I thought it was so cool that it was like one of the first vampire stories, and comparing it to the kind of standard vampire lore we're used to now. The second time I really liked the sapphic/feminist elements. This third time I was doing a class project on how vampire stories usually comment on xenophobia and fears about the "other", so all the stuff about foreign-ness, and how people define identity and stuff like that. It's like new stuff to think about every time haha.

*whispers* I like Carmilla better than Dracula.....🦇 Your TBR is so good and The Love Witch is such the perfect movie for Valloween!! The costumes are amazeballs and the whole film is like visual catnip. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! 💅 I really wanted to love Disfigured but it struck me as not adding all that much new to critical conversations on disability and representation. I also didn't quite agree with her readings of some texts, like Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" and that to be sweet is to be pitiful. I get where she's going but it didn't land for me so I'm excited to hear your thoughts!

Ooo I rated Dracula a 3 so there’s definitely room for me to love Carmilla more! Visual catnip 😍 Ahhh! I am so excited to get to it!! It reminds me of how much I loved Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette when it first came out for all of its over the top costumes and set design 🍰 And that’s good to know about Disfigured! I found it on Everand randomly and the FF readathon gave me a good excuse to prioritize this audiobook. I hope I learn atleast a few new nuggets of knowledge!!

Love Valloween and vampires! I’ve been collecting some romantic Halloween decor and putting some on my wishlist waiting for a sale 😅 I need to read Camilla as well. I think I’ve got a copy in my kindle that I’ve had since the early version and still haven’t gotten to. This is a perfect excuse to finally try it! 😊

I remember you recently reading it and enjoying it which is great because I have heard some folks be very very bored with it. I’m expecting it to read like a classic novel written in the 1800s 😅

@@happyhauntslibrary yeah it’s definitely a product of it’s time in regards to the writing style but I thought it was very readable, but I enjoyed it SO much better than Dracula if comparing the two classic vampire books.

@@happyhauntslibrary It was just meh for me. I have a hard time really enjoying any book even over like 50 years old haha. BUT I think it was so important as a horror reader because you get all of that background knowledge that slips into so much other horror like Renfield, Demeter, etc.

@@midnight-tomes girl SAME. I only really liked the beginning chapters and then the Last Voyage chapter. It was a “meh” read for me. I talk about it more in my spooky summer Vlog where I read it but basically I just got too annoyed by the ways the men treated Mina because she was a woman and then Stoker writing her to just accept it.

So I’m not the only one!!! I think it’s because women typically hide their first name and just use their initial to be a little more gender ambiguous so when a man does it, I’m think they’re a woman by default. 🤪 Haven’t I seen empire of the vampire on your tbr before or some video? Is that the one with a red book cover??

@happyhauntslibrary ALSO I really enjoyed reluctant immortals!! I seem to be in the minority, but the themes and characters just really spoke to me. Go in for the characters, not the plot, and I think you will appreciate it more. It wasn't perfect 5 star, but I still think about it 2 years later. But I still haven't read dracula or Jane eyre😅
