A taste of conflict: The politics of food in Jerusalem - Street Food

The ancient city of Jerusalem is sacred to three different faiths: for Jews it is the site of their first holy temple; for Christians it is the scene of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection; and for Muslims it is the location of the Prophet Muhammad's ascent to heaven.
A site of vast historical and religious significance, this beautiful city is also a tragic one - fought over for centuries and coveted by millions who have never set foot in it. It is at the heart of the ongoing and seemingly irresolvable Israeli-Palestinian conflict and everything there is overshadowed by politics.
Jerusalem's old city enthralls with its bustling markets and vibrant street life, but inside its walls, tensions are never far from the surface. History is a dimension of the present and there is little unity to be found in a city which Palestinians regard as their occupied capital.
In the struggle for the soul of a city, even food - a marker of identity, an expression of history, culture, and values - plays a part, and the roots of certain foods are fiercely debated.
For Palestinians, denied a state and with a national identity which is constantly undermined, food plays an even greater role in defining who they are.
Almost half of Israeli Jews come from Middle Eastern backgrounds where their parents and grandparents lived alongside Arabs in countries such as Iraq, Yemen and Morocco. Many dishes are a reminder of the shared history and culture of Arabs and Jews - something easily forgotten in today's divided politics.
In a city where Israelis and Palestinians attach great meaning and symbolism to food - whether religious, political or both - we visit a unique place, Eucalyptus, which is jointly owned by Palestinians and Israelis.
There, we sample dishes made by an Israeli Jew, a Palestinian Muslim, an Armenian, and a Palestinian Christian who, as 'Chefs for Peace', cook together to bridge religious and political divides. Convinced that ignorance about the other is at the heart of the conflict, the chefs try to educate people about others' history, traditions, and culture through the medium of food.
This film was first broadcast on Al Jazeera English in July 2008.

It is difficult to fear or hate people when you love the taste of their food. I used to fear Iranians until I was exposed to Iranian food. Now I pray for the people of Iran to be well and prosper. Their political leaders may be bad but the common people are kind, generous and very gracious, even to foreigners. True fact.
@jazzcatt

@b king That is NOT true! ALL political leaders, in all countries, in these times are not good for the regular, every day people. I am a USA citizen and I have NO liking for my political leaders and their stupid policies. I have the same wishes and dreams of all normal, everyday people all around the world; To live it peace, to love all life, and to learn different ways from my multi-cultural neighbors.

@@muwuny Short version. In WWI, the British asked Arabs to fight with them against the Turkish who had control of the Middle East. For which support the British promised the Arabs dominion over their lands at the end of the war. The British promise was a lie and Palestine was given over to the Israelis as part of the Balfour Declaration. Further insult was given by the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which divided up the lands of the Middle East between the French and the British. That kind of thing ruins your summer more so than stubble burning.

It's petty to fight over food, out of almost 200 nations in this world, somewhere, someplace, someone is cooking food that you thought only your people eat. Mexico is well known for their tortillas but I have seen videos of people from other countries, living in remote villages who make them as well. Just be grateful for what GOD has Created for us, food for us to enjoy. Give Thanks to GOD every day.
@alyas3953
@alyas3953 5 лет назад
BalmOfGilead07 You’re not understanding the point of the video. Yes other people in the world eat Tortillas, but everyone knows that Tortillas are Mexican food. If America were to claim that tortillas or enchiladas are American, there would be a lot of backlash. The point of the video is to highlight the Palestinian identity and struggle, when it comes to politics and food. Palestinians have lost land, homes, families, etc, and they feel that their food and culture is all they have. And when other nations claim it as there own, its not only stealing and appropriating ones culture, but it’s also denying the Palestinian existence altogether.

Israeli here. beautiful piece and very accurate description of the Jerusalem vibe. regardless to the political discussion which will never be solved unfortunately - the Zaatar ban is really due to ecological reasons. wild zaatar is in real risk of extinction if picking isn't halted. the palestinians more than anyone should be worried about it as it is a key milestone in their cuisine and culture. save the wild zaatar plant!

It’s never stopping growing up bro, I am Syrian and it grows just as any kind of grass since I was a child, it’s like a destiny for this area to have it, and for it to grow there.

In actual fact, all vegetarian food, is food of the gods (not animal flesh) only one who is awakened realizes the truth.

For 1 day a year a years old tradition can't be kept and allow the women to pick their herbs??? That's just plain cruel and mean.

Wild Zaatar is an endangered Plant. If everyone will keep picking it up there will none left. That's why it can be cultivated and grown in gardens.
