Some people can't take criticism at all. This is a red flag and makes it impossible to have a genuine, lasting relationship with them. This guy gives us an extreme and funny example.
have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, have trained and worked as an ABA therapist and I have a post graduate diploma in Integrative Counselling and another in Counselling Psychology. I have done extensive research on narcissism and the effects of narcissistic abuse. I work as a coach specifically with people who have experienced narcissistic abuse. I think many of us know someone like Mike. Best to leave them in their own misery because really you can’t be nice enough no matter how hard you try. I had someone like Mike in my life but I felt like I was always walking on eggshells and had to fake kindness towards him. It just became tiresome. I hit the trap door on him and it was a big relief! That is such a good point you made that even though they didn't criticize him personally, he was very personal in how he responded. That is indeed a sign of toxicity. At first, it was too hard to hear him gouge his guests and I wasn't sure I could continue to listen but when you got to George it was so absurd that I was just getting a good chuckle about it and it was right when you started laughing too. People just have no idea how they come off sometimes. He thinks he is making his guests sound bad but it is obvious who looks bad here.

This happened to me with a man I was dating. He's in the arts and was applying for a bank loan to buy a property. I said it's tricky with getting loans when you're a self-employed person in the arts, or at least it used to be. To that he quickly became unhinged and went into a very lengthy defense of how hard he had worked to get where he is, etc. etc.. It was completely overblown and odd. Red flag #1. Long story short, needless to say we are not together.

Great video! I usually see a host being apologetic in a response to posted criticism. If I saw this stuff on Airbnb I would steer clear of the property! I can’t believe people continue to stay there. The man is unhinged! Something I often find with online reviews is that the customer expects perfection in all aspects and will give a negative review that’s out of proportion to the issue described. I know this can really impact a business. The review culture is another aspect of our new social media world that can be totally toxic.

I dated that kind of guy, in fact I had a child with him. Everything is someone else's fault, for making him mad and ultimately miserable. Not currently with him. After about 2 years I caught onto the fact that he was just always going to be like that. A friend saw his texts to me and she said "You don't have to let anyone treat you that way" and it was like a lightswitch went off. I said you're right and dumped him. Well, he spent the next week texting me non stop, sending me pics of girls he was talking to, like I cared, there wasn't anything he could say or do to get me back after that. Once they blow that switch, its off forever! He played me like a game to get a baby and once he knew I was hooked off came the mask. I didn't know all this back then was 2010 - 2012, I think its great you're sharing your knowledge @LIveabusefree Its so much easier to leave when you understand the rules of the game.

I experienced the same thing but it was financially on the hook signing a lease together. Mask came off after 2.5 years. I thought he had a breakdown of some sort. Tried to get him help too. Then after 1 year of trying to fix things (hindsight I never should have done this) he stated something and I said to him “so this is all intentional?” And he basically answered “oh, yeah!” Then it took me 1 year to get him to leave because he wouldn’t.

I've been there. At one point I wanted to have a baby with him because I was so in love. I was discarded after four years because the only supply I had left was "unstable, emotional, fat old and needed to get out of the house" This was years of sabotaging every single relationship and lost my job because of his abuse. His last words to me were "sorry for leading you on" I went through hell fighting for him to see my worth and NOTHING was ever good enough. They want control. Period! No offense but I am so glad I didn't get pregnant. I could not imagine having his influence on an innocent child.

I’ve seen responses to reviews like this before where the seller lashes out in extreme ways. The time and effort expended on just getting even is insane. I’ve known people like that who will embark on a smear campaign at the slightest offence or criticism. It gets out of control very quickly. Would you consider making a video about whether there is an affiliation between narcissistic personality disorder and faked or exaggerated illnesses and/or injuries? I have a family member who has traits of narcissistic personality disorder. I’ve come to understand and accept why much of the psychological abuse I and my siblings endured as children and throughout our lifetimes from that person happened. Although this family member would never acknowledge or admit the hurt they’ve caused, just understanding why they’ve done (and do) the things they do has helped tremendously with my own personal healing. One thing this family member has done throughout their lifetime is fake or amplify sickness or pain. For example: having injured their knee so badly that they cannot walk without the use of a cane, but then dancing all night at wedding (with no cane), and then going right back to limping and using a cane once the party is over. Another example is having a blood test done and then keeping the bandage on for weeks and making it seem as though their arm is so soar that they cannot move it, yet they’ll spend hours in the garden. Anytime they are questioned about this behaviour, they’ll throw a fit and behave in such a way that makes you not ask anymore questions. In your opinion, can that sort of behaviour be a trait of narcissistic personality disorder or something completely separate? Thank you so much! Please continue to make these wonderful videos. I really look forward to them

Carers have told me stories about elderly people exaggerating or inventing illness or disability. Usually this is because they've been living on their own and they hoped appearing needy would convince their offspring, they needed to be with them. But what happens is the children get them carers because either they work, or they just don't want their toxic parent in their home. The elderly parent can't now say I'm not really as poorly as I said, it doesn't matter if you are not at home all the time - well they could but it wouldn't get them what they want. So the elderly parent will make things as difficult as possible for the carers, by being unhelpful and mean and refusing to do things they can actually do themselves. They will then call their offspring to tell them how horrible and nasty the carers are, and make as much trouble as they can for the offspring concerning the carers. They may also hope that If they can get the carers to refuse to do the call, their children will have no other option but to take them in. This scheme never works though. Because now the offspring are grown up they no longer believe the parent has life or death power over them, and they will have ceased blaming themselves for at least some of the abuse. The parent/abuser though hasn't changed, and they only know one way to behave, and they continue doing that, with minor adjustments, hoping their wicked child will eventually respond in the emotional manipulation. I think some narcissistic parents as they age realise they are going to need their children if they don't want to end up in a care home, but they also realise they have injured and harmed their children to such an extent, they might just do that and abandon them in a care home. They can no longer yell and threaten physical violence to get their children to do what they want, so they resort to emotional blackmail, and playing on the normal person's empathetic responses to a person in pain and in need. Don't be manipulated.

Yes dated someone like this, they couldn’t handle simple criticism or being questioned (even in a gentle way) without being extremely defensive and try and grind you down, from looks to your childhood. I had been researching about such personalities for a while (mainly to protect myself during life/dating) so knew the signs straight away and told him “when someone shows you who they are believe them” and blocked him, to only get a message from another number (him) a few days later asking if I’m ok, and talking like nothing had happened. Again blocked. Completely agree about the lack of ability of assessing that part of his brain that can’t accept things are not perfect as it will start causing him to see cracks in himself/shame. I knew someone like this! You couldn't even disagree with him, much less criticise him. I ended our friendship because he was so difficult. But until now, it never occurred to me that he is a narcissist! He *always* attacks a person's physical appearance rather than what's truly bothering him. This was eye opening about a couple of people I know or have known, in fact. Thank you Zoe. And by the by, you truly do look beautiful and happy. 🌹

OMG I would NEVER stay there from the rude response from the owner, whether it's true or not, it's so unprofessional. I had an ex boss like this, clients would leave poor reviews on Yelp and she would respond with such cutting words, The sad part about it was it was the truth she was a horrible very mean, rude woman and she couldn't keep up the facade of being sickeningly syrupy nice all the time So her real side would come out to the clients and therefore she would suffer the consequences of poor reviews on Yelp. Needless to say it also lost her many of her core employees that brought in most of her business..... She's truly suffering the her due karma now.... Thankfully.

So much of the information that you discuss with us is spot on!! From personal experience, it's taken as a personal attack or affront. The result is childlike bullying or accusations in that the way we approach an issue they want you to understand ( which is an untruth no matter how kind and thoughtful) delivery is an insult. It makes so much sense. As if a bully in a school yard, ties so with emotional and verbal abuse. How interesting these reviews, it's quite devastating and difficult when in a relationship with someone and their response You are a true gem and so valuable and a blessing to us. You are making an impact in how we gain insight to understand dynamic and how to best handle this exhaustive situations. Can truly be emotionally draining.

OMG !!! I just had something similar happen very recently. I gave constructive sensible criticism to my supplier in order to grow and move forward together in our relationship and she was not able to accept that she did anything wrong. She even told me that if I wasn’t happy, I could stop using them. I was flabbergasted !! I’m their client and spend good money with them. She could not and would not put herself in my shoes or empathise whatsoever. She preferred to loose me as a client rather than acknowledge my criticism and make me feel valued. Can she really afford it ? I doubt it. It’s a small and only 4yo company.... I was chocked. I have to keep using them for my business but I will show no loyalty when another supplier with a similar product comes along. I have accepted that we have no relationship at all and I’m only using them as a commodity. So sad.

I wrote a negative review of a local takeaway and they went ballistic, going as far as ringing me up to threaten me. I had to call the police. Their online response was unbelievable- just like Mike. When I checked others who'd given them bad reviews they were just as aggressive. I did think maybe they were going to have a heart attack they'd got so worked up...

Emotionally immature responses , it’s crazy because it says more about him than anything else . In his replies I wouldn’t want to stay there. I’ve come to the conclusion that people with these kinds of personality disorders , they don’t understand how coincidence works , what are the odds that the same thing can happen over and over yet they still think everyone is a liar

That first couple were being so polite about how shite it was. Like, "the loft will be fantastic - when it's finished" 😂. But why do we believe anything he says? He's already lying by description (a jetsetting couple in their 60s are not 'elderly'). Coz you say leaving bodily fluids is normal, but I am sure they didn't smear poo in the bed! (Was there a smudge of chocolate, fake tan, mud, hot cocoa - yes, maybe, sure. But NOT 💩)

I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed this video. You hit on so many good points and I love the examples you choose to give. The choice of using these air bnb reviews/his response was great! Even something so simple as this, just shows so much detail in what you’re trying to teach and I really appreciate that!! I have known people who react in the same way as this man did, but didn’t know it was from narcissism and so, you’re videos help me to understand the way a narcissist thinks. It’s so helpful and interesting to me. Thank you for the amazing content you put out! And just so you know , IT’S OKAY, if you upload a little late! I know I speak for many of your viewers when I say that we understand, and it doesn’t change the fact that we love and enjoy your videos very much. A lot of people are inconsiderate and lack respect these days . And not learning old fashioned manners and can't tolerate people. I don't think everyone is bad or fully narcissistic. They might not be thinking about people's feelings. A lot of people I have noticed take pride in being morally superior . But are not that understanding of respectful.

Silly question: Are people raised by narcissist parent(s) also hyper sensitive to criticism? I was the scapegoat in a relentlessly abusive family. After all that abuse, every time someone criticises me, I get really upset because it triggers my memories, even decades later. I have had to practice taking criticism in my stride and learning from it. I even started a few hobbies specifically giving myself permission to not do them well. Permission to make a mess, to make mistakes, to do some things badly. I am still hyper sensitive, but the abuse wasn't about what I did but about who I was.

I had lunch with a woman the other day who believes in astrology and I told her that I didn't. She went off the deep end. She accused me of being passive-aggressive and having a host of other psychological impairments. She took my not agreeing with her as criticism. She even started crying. At 53 years of age, she behaved like a three year old. She doesn't know the difference between a "personal belief system" and criticism. Good grief.
