I love Melbourne trams, not now I’m in a wheel chair as there are not many trams I can get on sadly. Also the trams need more priority over cars by removing the cars of the track area. This would get more people on the trams and reduce the carbon footprint.❤

Whilst it is true that sand is automatically dispensed when a slip is detected, by that point it is too late for the sand to take maximum effect. The whole point of using sand is to prevent a slip from occurring in the first place. The effectiveness of sand is dependent on the tram being driven in accordance with prevailing track conditions and the driver's awareness and action in dispensing sand by manual activation and also by ensuring the sand flow is not impeded by blocked pipes which happens when the pipes are not routinely checked as often as prior to departure from the terminus on each run during inclement weather.

We've got plenty of trams in the place I live (not in Australia), and some of them are pretty fast, but I've never noticed them dropping sand. Maybe they've got some emergency mechanism that does this, but so infrequently that I never noticed. Either way, why do Melbourne trams need to use so much of the stuff?
@TheLostProbe
@TheLostProbe 10 месяцев назад
I'm guessing it's mainly because there are a lot of trams in the fleet. like, right now there's 493 of them, and in 2025 they're gonna add another 100 next-generation trams to the fleet. so that many trams means a lot of sand

I had the pleasure of spending a 3 and a 7 month stint on a working holiday visa back in 1999. The only thing that put me off a little until this week was the slightly authoritarian police force, but after watching 8 U.K police officers drag a 16 year old autistic kid out of her own home for using the word "lesbian" i'm now convinced that both our police forces are taking lessons from the same place.

@TheLostProbe 10 месяцев назад
the newer E-class trams and the upcoming G-class ones do have more wheels, unlike the older ones. problem is that the older ones make up a huge portion of the fleet, so removing them would cause big issues all over the network. they're hoping to phase out the Z-class and A-class trams with the 100 G-class trams they've ordered to be delivered by 2025, and the E-class ones have allowed for quite a few older ones to be retired, but not enough

It sounds like both of their major problems can be solved by changing to ...insert drum roll here...electric buses.
@thinklist
@thinklist Год назад
Interesting 🧐
@Sagealeena
@Sagealeena Год назад
Electric busses have much lower capacity than trams (our current trams coming in over the last ten years have capacity for 210 people). Rubber on asphalt (busses) is also much less efficient than steel on steel (trams). There’s a reason Melbourne has kept its tram network! We have way too many people using the tram network and busses couldn’t cater to the same number of people
@ghost307
@ghost307 Год назад
@@Sagealeena I agree, but comparing a single bus (that seats 50 people and also has lots of standing room) to a multi-car tram of indeterminate length is not quite a fair comparison. Actually, my comment was intended to point out to other people that focusing on a solution to a single problem without considering other factors tends to lead into trouble. For example, if the problem is airplanes that crash and that is the ONLY thing that is to be considered, then building taxiways to connect every airport in the country would solve it. Of course, that's a ridiculously extreme example but I think it highlights the fallacy of treating any single problem in a vacuum. Everything in the real world is a compromise...there is no such thing as a 'perfect solution'.
@TheLostProbe
@TheLostProbe 10 месяцев назад
@@Sagealeena honestly, I think this city could benefit from using more buses alongside trams. both are far more efficient than cars anyway
