I am sorry to see the V6 go away. I really don't think I am the only person on earth that prefers a v6 to a turbo 4. Let's be honest, automakers are going to turbo engines because are meeting the EPA's MPG and exhaust emission requirements. They will try to convince us that it is a better performing engine but in the real world, turbo 4 cylinder engines are not better to drive and live with every day.

I don't mind the Atlas having a turbocharged engine, but it's the engine size I do have a problem with it. VW doesn't have any large turbocharged 4 cylinder engines in their portfolio, but they do have that sweet 2.7 v6 engine (300hp) in China that can move the Atlas with ease.

Turbos are never a replacement for displacement, in a sports car yes, you need temporary boost of power, towing with a turbo motor is a bad idea. It gets red hot, it's cooking everything under the hood, it's choking on hot air, pulls timing, and you're now making 170hp, and if you tow a lot that engine is dead in a few years

As much as I dislike Toyota for getting rid of the V8 in the tundra, and now probably the V6 in the Tacoma, it is nice to see them moving with the times. We were looking for a new car a couple months ago. We test drove the Highlander. The only one on the lot was a little NA 4 banger. It was majorly underpowered for the size. We asked about a V6 option and the salesman swore up and down that there was only the NA 4 or the 4 hybrid, no other more powerful engine options. Unfortunately, Toyota lost out on the sale to Honda. We got an MDX Type S instead. The other option was a Telluride, but we hadn't heard anything for months after ordering it. There was no update or confirmation email and the Acura became available and is a lot more fun to drive.

If the turbo would actually provide an advantage in fuel economy I would agree, but in the case of the Highlander it doesn’t, which is why I think they should’ve just stuck with the V6.
@ebels3
@ebels3 Год назад
@@M67v It's not just fuel efficiency. It's also emissions. You get a more complete burn when revving higher, thus lowered emissions. Not to mention, the turbo does help with economy at elevation, where you don't need to rev the engine as high for as long when equipped with forced induction.

I agree with most of the comment. In my experience the EPA number is exceeded easily on these turbos. Volkswagen rates their Atlas 2.0 turbo as 24 highway, but multiple videos and tests from owners have gotten over 30 miles to the gallon on the highway at 65-70mph and using math to find mileage. Not relying on the onboard gauges. Who knows if this Highlander will give similar performance experiences.
@M67v
@M67v Год назад
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 I’ve owned 5 naturally aspirated cars before and my sixth car is my first turbo. On the highway yes the fuel economy is very good, but in city driving it’s similar to a NA V8, and my car is a turbo I6. It’s because in city driving you’re trying to get up to speed very often, and yes turbo cars have plenty of low end torque but that’s only when it’s in boost, and more boost means more fuel being used.

I’m thinking this is just one of those weird interim choices for powertrain as Toyota goes fully Hybrid on their crossover lineup. The next refresh will likely be hybrid only like the new Sequoia, and this is not the car to put something really fun or flashy as it’s essentially their minivan for those who hate minivans. Those drivers don’t really care so much what’s under the hood as the drivers of the Sequoia, the 4Runner and the trucks.
