The second edition of The Carnivore Code (new cover and index!) is available for pre-order now! www.Thecarnivorecodebook.com release date is August 4th 2020 in ebook, print, and audiobook formats.
Is a pill as good as the sun? In this snippet from my podcast this week (Fundamental Health, available on iTunes, RU-vid, and carnivoremd.com) with Dr. Jack Wolfson we discuss the differences between real sunlight and a vitamin D pill. In light of the evidence showing that those with lower levels of 25-OH vitamin D (30ng/ml) do much worse with COVID, I feel this is a very important discussion.
As you’ll hear Jack and I discuss here, though epidemiology studies show correlation between higher levels of vitamin D in the blood and better outcomes, many of these same outcomes cannot be replicated in interventional trials by giving vitamin D. This suggests that there may be other benefits to the sun that are not found in a vitamin D pill, or that those with the highest levels of vitamin D may also be doing things in the sun (walking, running, playing, etc.) that also have benefit.
It would be very interesting to do an interventional study with sun exposure alone controlling for other variables to see if this is indeed the case.
When I’ve posted about this in the past many have asked about vitamin D lamps, Sperti brand is a good option (no affiliation) for those who don’t live in lower latitudes, as are trips to Hawaii, Costa Rica, or Belize. :)

I wonder how much vitamin D they were giving people in the studies he’s referring too? Because the mainstream recommendation is to supplement 600iu per day which is hardly any, and some of that won’t even be absorbed. I’ve read studies that said you can produce up to 20,000 IU from 30 minutes of sun exposure! So if they were giving people low doses of vit.d supp’s it doesn’t really seem like a fair comparison.

Hey Doc, in 2010 I eliminated ALL of my life-long asthma symptoms by getting my D3 blood level up just above 80 ng/ml. I was keto at the time. I did this by supplementing 8000 IUs D3 daily while living in the Pacific NW. I’m a nutrition geek and when we moved to Santa Fe, I experimented by dropping the D3 and sunning for an hour in a bikini between 10-2 for 3 months. My blood level dropped to 54 ng/ml and my asthma symptoms came back. 3 weeks after I started supplementing D3 again, my symptoms were gone. I’ve been med-free for over 10 years now. Others in carnivore FB groups have had the same experience; they needed to get their 25(OH) D level high enough to eliminate symptoms.

Early winter here in Sydney Australia. UVI index is 3. I am brown skinned man, little chubby 😁. Vitamin D sun app I am using to help estimate D production indicates that I would need to be in the direct sun during peak D times for 45 minutes wearing shorts only I would produce 1000 IUs. To get to anywhere near optimal levels that would mean 6 hrs of peak D producing sunlight at this time of year. Looks like I will need to up my supplementation to compensate. I have just started 6000 IUs and will try get as much sun as I can daily. Given I tested at 73 nmol at the end of January, summer here, which still puts me in need to supplement I don’t know how it’s possible for me to get optimal D storage without significant supplementation. Definitely will up the sun exposure in summer but in the interim will up the D3 supplementation, get full sun when I can and when summer roles back around make it a priority to get more sun exposure. Thanks for the information

Question Please. How much sunshine is effective per day? And healthy without sunscreen? Where is the balance ? I also believe some real sun each day is essential, and live in CA where I can get it most days. As a senior with fair skin, I try to balance between the real sun light(20-30mins)and then use a good sunscreen for more exposure time.
@johnnycolon3208
@johnnycolon3208 4 года назад
The amount of Vitamin D you would make in 30 mins in the sun would depend on time of day and what you are wearing on the day. For instance if you only wore shorts you would make 10,000 to 20,000 IU's in 30 mins. However, if only the head and arms are exposed, for example jeans and t-shirt this would only produce around 30% of that, meaning that you would need an hour and a half exposure for the same amount. Also know that the skin will only produce Vit D whilst your shadow is shorter than your height so it is important to get the exposure when the sun is higher in the sky. Say between 10am and 2pm. Once your shadow is longer than your actual height you are no longer making Vit D. As for the sunscreen; once you apply sunscreen to your skin you are no longer making Vit D so be sure to get your sun exposure BEFORE you put the sunscreen on. Once that stuff is on its game over. All that said it also depends on your skin type. The above information is for a person of European extraction and the darker the skin the more time in the sun is required to make the Vit D. There is a good app written by Dr Holick, a world expert on Vitamin D, it is called Dminder which can be found for free in AppStore. I use it personally and find it quite useful. For instance I took a 4 hour walk just the other day and know that I generated 5570 IU's in that time dressed in trousers and t-shirt, although, I am in England and it's not exactly blistering hot here. Probably a wee bit hotter there in CA. For more Vitamin D information a good place to visit is the Vitamin D Society (previously Vitamin D Council) which can be found here www.vitamindsociety.org/ Apologies for the long rambling reply. Hope some of the above info helps though. Be well.

sifting tru the shit It’s what hairy animals consume for vitamin d. Their hair excretes an oil which produces vit.d when exposed to uv light, which they then consume when they lick their fur. They use the same process to make d3 supplements with sheep’s wool.

Yes, the best source is the sun ... living in the UK, where the sun is often feeble, I will still continue to take some supplements as well. Great, we can't even leave the country so a great idea that we just head off to another country for the sun. It would be good but it is not always practical.

I was doing some research into Vitamin D and it would seem we can't even absorb it efficiently from animal sources, it is best converted from cholesterol. We do photosynthesize, but it's for vitamins instead of glucose.

Vitamin D is made when UV (more precisely, UVB rays) react with a compound (7-dehydrocholesterol) in the skin. The best rays for UV synthesis have wavelengths between 270-300 nm. These wavelengths are present when the UV index is greater than 3.29 Jul 2008

Any thoughts on vit d lamps? I couldn’t tolerate pill forms and it seemed to trigger MS flares. Desperate. I do better with steady weather bad sunshine the start to nose dive with severe symptoms. I had been an archaeologist, struggling with undiagnosed disease. When I went out to work surveying in some of the highest UV geography, I felt better. Disease eventually caught up to me and ruined my ability to work in this field. It was a fast and steady dissent once I left the sunshine. Now 26 years later, I’m desperate to find solutions.

@SincerityJ

So basically you didn't take in anything from watching this video. Sunlight is essential for health. Over do it, and it'll cause damage. Personally, for antiaging, I wear sunscreen on my face, neck and upper chest everyday, where I live in the subtropics. I leave other areas without it to absorb the sun. I don't lie out in the sun for long periods. I hope I get enough from a bit of gardening, walking, hanging out washing, etc, and all doors and windows open.
