Controversial Thoughts: Which Plants are Most/Least Toxic?

Last week’s Controversial Thoughts was on The Carnivore Diet for Beginners. This week, I wanted to discuss the spectrum of plant toxicity a bit more. Thinking about this from the perspective of plants makes it a whole lot easier. Plants don’t want their seeds (nuts, grains, seeds, legumes), leaves, stems, or roots eaten. Avoid these foods while focusing on the least toxic parts of plants (fruit- sweet and non-sweet) while making meat and organs the centerpiece of your diet and you will thrive. #theremembering

Could we create an Excel spreadsheet of many (100?) common plant foods which could then be "user sorted" by ... carbohydrate content, overall toxicity, specific toxicity (oxalates, lectins etc.) and key nutrition benefits. I would be happy to help. 😊 It would be a big help for the carnivore-ish in the tribe to make good choices.

Did you know that Oxalate crystals can come out of a woman's vagina, and they can also come out of your eyes, in the form of sharp glass shards, that literally come out of your eyes, when you go on a strict zero-oxalate diet, or a very low oxalate diet. The oxalates in the body will "fester" back out of the body, and you can see glassy shards coming out of your eyes in some exteme cases. Also, Oxalates are found in breast tissue in woman, and these sharp shards cause 80% of kidney stones, and they are also found deep within the brain. For Humans to be told that green plants are "healthy" is one of the biggest inversions of health that has ever happened.

Plants also exist on a spectrum of seasonality, something we have completely lost in our modern world of transportation and refrigeration. We have an unnatural access to these toxins all year round.
@amattson6578
@amattson6578 2 года назад
Interesting idea. There could be more to this. Getting your diet in balance with the seasonal climate you live in....but then again many mammals will hibernate during winter and humans cant really do that. Plus we are overpopulated in most areas and need to have access to these foods year round.
@aschlauf
@aschlauf 2 года назад
@@amattson6578 Humans are not a hibernating species. We continue to hunt in the winter and many cultures live in areas where it is winter most of the year. Your second point is a little complicated and might just be some conditioning of our modern lifestyle, but you can still choose to exclude plants in the winter and eat lean meat. The idea that we need more of these plants to sustain us, many of which didn't exist 100 years ago, is more propaganda than necessity.

@@amattson6578 Not in their current size and forms yes, that is fact. They have been bred. Plants containing defense chemicals is also a documented fact. Most plants in the wild will make you sick or kill you. Uncooked beans in the store can kill you. I don't care about the carnivore diet. I don't care what anybody else chooses to eat. Go out into the woods and find enough wild spinach to sustain you and fill a super market bag. People are putting 2-4 cups of it in Ninja blenders daily or twice a day. That is not natural. Plants may not contribute significantly to the nutrition of my diet, but I do use them for texture and flavor quite a bit still. I also enjoy cooking in itself, so having veggies involved adds pleasure there too. I'm lucky that after going on a carnivore diet for a while, I figured out plant foods generally don't bother me much as long as I don't do anything too crazy, so I enjoyed bringing them back in. I don't know what I'd do without tomatoes, herbs, and garlic lol.

I did briefly hear you mention soaking and sprouting and I do think those are great steps to take. However, in looking at ancestral diets those were necessary steps. And think, when it came to grains the harvest was difficult and the grains were ground by hand. So take wheat for instance, ground by hand, fermented and finally able to use just enough at a time for the meal. There were no preservatives to make it last and be edible the next day. These factors would make the amount of grain available per person very limited. Corn would be even more so because of nixtamalization being a such a lengthy process. Also noted, that when native people ate chilies they burned off the outside skin and removed the seeds. People do the same thing with foods like tomatoes. At a minimum beans should be soaked and the soaking water thrown out. Would be better to soak and sprout them. Besides eating too many of these foods I think we're skipping too many of the preparation steps. Just a thought. It would be helpful to have a list of foods to avoid and/or how to make them less undigestable and dangerous. For now I'm just not eating them but hope to one day be able to eat them again in season and in very limited quantities. Thank you for helpful videos.

One thing on the topic. I have gut issues and I found that ripe fruit/nuts/vegetables with thin peel are ok for me, they're quite sweet like fruits and they don't have the astringent taste that signals phytic acid and other blocking chemicals. Thin peel nuts, young potatoes with low starch, etc. The problem with mass produce is noone waits for things to get ripe, just like with bananas. When you eat some vegetable that feels rough, has starch oozing from it (the bubbly juice, not clear but acidic, like with apples), if its sour, that's the ones you shouldn't eat. Thin peel/ripe/soft to touch (yes even potatoes) are your chance to eat stuff without actually damaging your gut. Even fruit can be full of bad stuff if it's not ripe, so don't just grab anything just cause it fits to your diet, the quality and sort of fruit and veggies matters A LOT.

Dried meat like beef jerky, beef liver, lamb, etc. is good. Canned organic chicken or wild caught fish is another option - like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. Canned beef if you can find it without preservatives. Or you can buy a pressure canner and preserve your own meats and poultry like our grandmothers did. Boxes or bottles of organic broth are good. Tins or jars of squash, pumpkin, sweet potato purée, pineapple, dried apples, bananas, oranges, dates, pickles, sauerkraut, olives, and frozen berries are fine. He lists them as low toxic plant foods that can be added to a meat based diet. He also lists white rice. These are not foods to use as your main dishes, but small portions you can add. In a quarantine situation, you may need to eat more of them than you normally would.

If I let my 4 year old daughter she would eat only butter, honey, cheese, cucumbers without the seeds, girl HATES seeds with good reason as it turns out and white rice. Surprisingly enough the only grain that doesn't spike my blood glucose levels probably because I soak it before cooking. My boy(1 year old) and I would eat any beef dried or raw! I have to make sure I don't store raw meat too low in the fridge because he WILL take a chunk out of it. Can't be mad at him though, I prefer raw liver and raw beef. Just goes to show that when children(the people with the least ingrained eating habits) are given the option will avoid most vegetables, seeds, nuts, and grains.

Interesting to read your comment. I was just saying to my boyfriend last night on how children often hated eating veggies but parent always force them too. How many times have we heard, "eat your vegetables!! If you don't eat all your veggies, no dessert!!" Children often have a yuck reaction to veggies. Or they force kids to finish all their foods even though they say their full. How that can, inadvertently, condition them to not naturally know when they are full. I believe also kids have an innate knowing of what to eat, like animals. It's all the chemicals in processed foods and ,as you said, "ingrained" habits that screw up/disrupt that innate knowing.

I used to force myself to eat these things occasionally because of the brainwashing. I always love meat and animal fats and eggs and eat these everyday. For vegetables I only like a few kinds and would well cook them in soup dishes. For fruit I also like only a few kinds. I once had a very bad case of food poisoning a few years ago and during that time the only thing my body wanted was orange juice. French onion soup is another favorite of mine (and I guess now can be considered a guilty pleasure) and I wonder if soups and stews make plants less toxic and their nutrients more bioavailable since (besides open fire cooking) throwing a bunch of produce and meat in water and simmering it for hours is probably one of the oldest cooking methods that humans used.

In summer I crave more peaches and cherries. In winter I sometimes eat squash and a slice of apple. In autumn I like plums and apricots. It probably also has to do with what is available and tasty in grocery stores that season. I eat about 95% of my calories from animal products still, but I will add plants when I feel like it. Spinach is chock full of oxalates and the calcium it contains is less than 5% bioavailable. Lettuce is more favorable regarding anti-nutrients and bioavailability. Having had two bouts of kidney stones I will never eat spinach again. Poison Ivy is yet another curse.

I eat nuts and some seeds. (walnut, pecan, macademia, pumpkin, sunflower, chia). Not all the time, and sometimes a lot. I tend away from squash, even after buying a lot of it. I can eat many vegies, and was strongly self-conditioned to do it (for 30+ years). I now tend towards carnivore, and following my desires more than the experts' proclamations. Even though the gaggle of experts will contradict each other citing "science" (a word which now means about as much as 'religion'), I resolve to claim my own authority and make use of the experts to deepen into my own authority. Lastly, I appreciate you, Paul, for staying curious, exploring, and continuing to delve into the "science" and sharing what you find. Fortunately, there is some "good science" and not all of the conclusions are in agreement amongst the good scientists with their science. Between you with your stand for carnivore, and Pam Popper with her stand for vegetarian, (whom I really really respect for her stand related to the c-viral charade) I can be well informed and continue to deepen the listening for my own well-being. My own tendency is to listen to many viewpoints (about 50 others than the 2 mentioned here) and then listen to my own body, accepting that wisdom might include the journey through some challenging results, for purposes other than only good body health. I accept and own the consequences.

Paul, seriously. What would you recommend to a 60yo make today in terms of the 3 macro nutrients. Also, of the 3, what would you suggest are the tips 5 foods as go-to staples, and the top 5 substitutes when the go-to is unavailable. I've watched so many of your videos, but I am a bit confused by all the changes over time, and I am just catching up. I get the NO SEED OIL thing and am on board. I am all about whole food, single ingredient natural foods. I seem to understand the OK for fruit and honey. I get the poly unsaturated discussions as applied to chicken (and turkey?) But are these ok "sometimes"? I have had the worst ten years of my life trying to figure out what happened to me as I seemed to have all kinds of strange allergies to foods suddenly and could never figure out why. Arthritis, carpal tunnel, inflamation, GERD, eczema, hives or histamine reactions, it's been miserable. When I first started Carnivore 4 weeks ago, a lot of good things happened which include all symptoms gone. But now I see you are ok with fruits and honey. Now I am so unsure what to do about macros?

Those of us who may be more moderate in terms of physical activity can modify accordingly. I'm finding lately that it feels just right to have a huge steak at night, and then a small portion of fruit as a counterpoint. I just had 1/3 of a ripe mango and it hit the spot. That is just glycogen. Fresh meat also contains glycogen, but since almost always meat is aged at least a couple weeks before it is sold, the glycogen isn't present in it anymore. It is completely reasonable to assume that our ancestors would have gotten carbs in the form of glycogen after a fresh kill. I know for a fact that even if I eat 2 pounds of mussels in one sitting, I do not feel any type of bad, as opposed to when I eat an equivalent amount of carbs from a sweet potato or something. I would say don't worry about it and just eat it if you crave it.

I began with a more moderate version, eating eggs, fish, pork, chicken, lamb, organs etc. This didn't help with my eczema and my stomach was still terrible. I decided to only go for beef for the last 30 days and I had okayish results, my eczema would still flare up now and then and I was fatigued all the time. I eventually gave up as I lost 9kg (I am not fat) and was very tired of basically eating the same thing all day long. Now I am back to eating carnivore. I've been going for 20 days of only beef and beef bone broth. I drink 4 cups of broth a day and eat two stakes of ribeye or similar cut. I can't get any grass fed stuff as its super expensive in my country and eating ribeye/fatty cuts is already expensive as it is. I want to eat nose to tail, but its impossible, as soon as I eat anything else my face flare up with eczema. Same story when I've tried supplementing. This is making me super depressed. I hate having to eat the same thing day in and day out. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? How long do you think it will take until I see improvement? Other ideas?

I assume that there is a considerable difference when the seeds are fruit-based and within as opposed to normal seeds.
