A Walk Around Loch Venachar between Callander and Brig o'Turk

A walk around Loch Venachar in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The walk is around 13 miles long, and starts and ends at Callander, initially following the southern side of the loch towards Brig o'Turk, then the northern side of the loch below Ben Ledi. From Brig o'Turk back to Callander the walk follows a section of the Great Trossachs Path, a long-distance path of around 30 miles that runs between Inversnaid on the banks of Loch Lomond and Callander. This particular section of the Great Trossachs Path offers good views down onto Loch Venachar, and is a good workout as it follows the undulating contours of the hillside under Ben Ledi.
Views of Ben Ledi from the southern side of Loch Venachar are awesome, as is the view towards Brig o'Turk with the magnificent little mountain of Ben A'an in the background.
After what is a pretty long tiring hike, we end with a pint in the Lade Inn in Kilmahog, just outside Callander. This is quite simply an awesome walk and a great adventure.

Your videos are so relaxing. They make me very happy. The scenery and culture are wonderful and so is your music. There’s nothing else like it on RU-vid. I’m an American descendant of Scottish settlers and have only been to Edinburgh for a day trip once when I was in London and took the train up for the day. You make me want to come back and just wander around Scotland on foot. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

By all means Ed, blow your nose when you need to! I think this video was really nice; the pie shop, the beautiful loch, the animals along the way, and most especially the homestead ruins. As usual, everything was lovely and interesting. Thanks for sharing. Lynn

Another lovely walk, thanks for taking me along. When you were in that pie shop I found myself shouting at the screen "get a mutton pie!", I left Scotland 50 years ago but still miss the mutton pies we used to get in Maryhill.

The unusual name of Brig o'Turk comes partly from the location of a bridge there. The "Turk" element comes from the Gaelic tuirc, which means wild boar, and suggests they were once hunted there. A few years ago, I heard what sounded like a wild boar at Brig o'Turk, but I couldn't see it. It didnt sound like it could have been anything else. It looks like they are still there after perhaps centuries. Its a great place for walking, and I was at the Loch Venachar dam last summer when the water level was low. Well done for obeying the 'SLOW' sign😁 Great video👍

Know this: there are enough of us here that appreciate you and your videos, warts and all. There are enough moments of brilliance to keep us all enthralled and coming back for more. We know you're not David Attenborough with a his crew of dozens to help him produce his productions. We know there's no production assistant waiting off camera with a box of tissues. It's just one man trying to balance the demands of filming with a 10 odd mile walk and the risk of being caught out on the trail in the dark. Keep up the good work and tell the naysayers to go forth and multiply!

Thanks Jim. I remember heading out for a small walk when we were allowed during the Covid pandemic, and my heart gave a few little thumps that suggested it wasn't entirely happy. Covid was a heck of a thing. But I seem to have sorted it out simply by walking. I think if we all walked more there would be reduced need for all those pills many folk take. Take care.

What a lovely walk, beautiful light. I loved the sheep and grumpy looking cow, the ruins, moss covered rocks in the woods and the slow sign made me laugh out loud. It's amazing the random things you find where you least expect them. Beautiful wee bridges too. And to top it off with an Arran Blonde, perfect reward after 13 miles. That's a lot of mileage! Great video as always 🙂

I really enjoyed this video Eddy, as I spent many days of holiday time in the stunning Trossachs area, mainly Brig O’Turk and Callander. Never been on the South side of Loch Venachar before, certainly looks like a great walk! I remember seeing Samson’s putting stone while driving along the A821, so will look forward to whenever you are on that adventure. I recall a place called “The Scotch Oven on Callander Main Street which made the most amazing pies, and also had some great meals at the Lade Inn. Eddy, your videos are great, entertaining and appreciated, so don’t allow these negative comments made by the minority to spoil your input. Take care and best regards, Rob.

Hi Ed, aye, that was some walk, the good lady and me have walked and cycled there many times. One day on the way back to Callander she got a puncture, unfortunately I forgot the picture outfit. But I placated her with haggis neeps and tatties in the Lace inn. Who cares how you pronounce names, I overheard a posh sounding man telling his weans how Chatelerault should be said or I would still be mispronouncing it to this day. I must get back to Callander for a steak and black pudding pie.
