One of my favourite poor man meals I make for my family is shakshuka! Super easy, all you need is some spices, eggs, and tomatoes. Even my very carnivorous husband enjoys it for dinner. Used to have it weekly to help the grocery bill!
Try sautéing onions, green chilli ,tomatoes, green bell pepper and cilantro until it all combines and melt together and then ad salt and pepper and then add the eggs and mix until it’s done 😍😍😍 super delicious
Another money saving hack I do is I buy peppers whenever they’re on sale. Or in the about to go bad bin and take them home and cut them up with onions and put them in a bag in the freezer they are kinda pricey per pepper so buying them when they’re on sale is a game changer and add so much flavor and veg to meals
We're a family of 7 here in the US, and we have to stretch about $500 a month on food. Lots of simple ingredient meals using whole foods... More beans, rice, and veggies than meats or we'll have meat a couple times a week.
I would love a video about lunches and snacks, especially for kiddos. I find myself doing the same thing almost every day, and would love some new ideas. ❤
Hi Sarah! Thank you for sharing some meal ideas! Regarding dry ground beef (or any meat), you can add a quarter teaspoon of baking soda per pound of meat to keep it moist even if overcooked :) you don’t end up tasting any of the baking soda, and it works wonders! I usually mix the baking soda with a tablespoon of water before pouring it over the meat in the pan and mixing. Thanks again, and have a good week!
@@Coinstarsilversearcher2From a quick google search it sounds like this guy is talking about taking large amounts daily and long term for heartburn relief. The amount consumed in baking or cooking would be extremely minimal compared to what he’s talking about. I’ve never seen any studies saying that baking soda isn’t safe to eat.
Wrote this down for myself and sharing in case anyone else would find it helpful too! Can't wait to try this! Sarah's Creamy Avocado Herb Sauce: Blend Together: 2 Small Avocados 1/2 Cup Parsley 1/2 Cup Cilantro 4 Garlic Cloves 1/2 Cup Broth 1/2 Cup Olive Oil 1/4 Cup Unsalted Pistachios 1/4 Pine Nuts 2 TBSP Lime Juice 3 TBSP Lemon Juice Salt to Taste
These are some great ideas! Thank you for sharing. I have the privilege of a similar food budget, but I work with a population that truly knows what it is to work at or near the poverty line. They aren’t able to make choices about saving for the future-they are just trying to not have bare shelves at the end of the month. I think a different title for foods and meals that stretch the budget of families who are experiencing more privilege than others could be more inclusive and aware of others in different situations.
I would not call these poor man's meals either. My mother served poor mans meals for 17 years. One can of Spam or one can of Tuna for 5 people is a poor meal. I have enough money now but I am still careful with food. No fillings though : )
The way you say cilantro and Parmesan cracks me up!! 😂 My under $10 for a family of 6 are spaghetti and meat sauce, chili and corn bread, pork chops and rice, taco with Mexican rice, garlic parm chicken pasta and homemade chicken noodle soup with crackers. I buy my meat in bulk to save and use for multiple meals, as well as my rice and pasta.
I love your calm demeanor! I am finding with the voice-over videos that I have to turn my volume up to hear you, but the music is quite loud. Not sure if anyone else agrees? Thanks!
We make "poor man's meals" every night also. Family of five (and growing!) budget is tight, so saving money on food is a must! We often make stir frys of chicken or cheaper cuts of beef from the butcher and loads of veggies and spices over rice or egg pasta. Soo healthy and delicious and cost effective!
I am swiss and had to google what swiss cheese is 🤣 we have a lot of different cheeses here. I just found out, its some sort of Emmentaler cheese. I love watching your videos and you inspired me to make sourdough bread by myself. At the moment my first sourdough starter is in the making 😊
You know, there is also Swiss Roll in Asia and I was telling my husband how much I like them as a child and he was like "WHAT?". hahaha! It's a type of log cake with cream rolled inside them 😆 Just thought this might amuse you 😆
I froze all my left over veggies like you said in the last video Sarah what a time saver. I had zucchini, Buk Chou, capsicum, corn - I added that to the sauce pan follow by some pre cooked quinoa and a small can of salmon, topped with hummus so yum! Took me 5 minutes. Thanks for your help 🙏
I love how you take care of your family! Women like you are rare these days. I cheer you on, you are doing all the right things. May God bless you and your family.

Sarah I do need to make two comments since I really like you, and I’m Mexican hahah sorry, the skillet is Tex-Mex (US) not Mexican at all… just FYI, the street corn is just right out of the steam (mayo, cheese, chili powder and lime, that’s it) 2min of preparation (and no butter)… and just to raise a bit of awareness, these are not a poor man meals hahaha well, poor men in first world country! I would call them affordable meals, or budget friendly… however, to share some more ideas, for me it would be 1-2 beans tacos (just the tortilla, two spoons of beans, slice of avocado), or tuna salad with crackers, mixed with avocado instead a of mayo… beef/meat is for rich people, which brings me to the point of awareness, here 70% of the population lives in poverty, and relies on beans for protein and I believe they receive free (fortified) milk from the government, and of course these people have no nutritional knowledge (they don’t think, oh here’s my protein intake, they just eat when food’s available)… so summary for this last point, we need to thank every meal that comes to us, stop wasting food, take restaurants left overs to give away to people who need it, these are rich meals! And I’m glad and thankful I/we can have them in our table, be grateful ❤️
Another method for cooking the corn using the grill: You can keep the corn in their husks, and grill them in the husks. It steams them inside. Grill 3-5 mins, rotating them 3-4 times for a total of 15-20 mins. Let cool on a baking sheet for 5-10 mins, then peel them and serve. So delicious, and all the cooking is outside!
Thanks Sarah, I really enjoyed this video and now have some new recipes to try for my family! Just wondering if you might consider doing a kitchen tour video? Specifically on your favourite pots/pans/appliances/storage containers/etc? Am in desperate need of a kitchen upgrade! Many thanks for your videos and kitchen wisdom 💜
As soon as I saw the Mexican skillet bowls I text my husband to tell him we’re adding that to our meal plan. Also now I need to try Mexican street corn.
Just stumbled upon your channel and I am loving it! I'm still working my way through your videos but if you haven't covered it already, could you please show *in detail* HOW do you wash and care for your cast iron pans?! I have a couple but I'm too intimidated by them. Thanks 😊
What I came here to say!! 🎉 Can peel a few layers and keep about 3 layers on and grill. The only way for me!! And if they really want more charred marks they can remove more husks at the beginning or completely remove at the end and throw it back on the grill.
My favorite inexpensive meal to make is chili. It's filling, healthy, and disguises veggies for my pickier kids (and myself) so we get those in more. Ground beef is also really expensive so we make a double batch to last us days
@@Mk-kr1bi It can be spicy! We use chili spices, cayenne pepper and other seasonings because we like ours spicy. You can put jalapeño peppers and stuff to make it even spicier if that's what you like
I love your inspiration 🥰 an additional tip: you can also replace the avocado with peas (the one in a jar). It adds even more protein and is a lot cheaper (where I live avocados are quite expensive. You can also do this (partly or totally replace) for guacamole to hide some extra veggies! I promise no one will notice and the color is so beautiful 😍
Will you please tell me where you got your shorts? I want a pair! Also, I am in the middle of doing somethings financially. When I don’t have to work so much, I want to use some of your ideas in my kitchen. So if you think your videos aren’t helping, know that they are!! I am a family of 6 and I love watching your videos!!
The key is keeping on top of the cost of proteins - this is where the expense is. My husband and I have some meals with plant proteins eg beans, lentils, which are cheaper, then have others with more expensive proteins such as fish, chicken or meat. I find it inspiring that millions of people in India are Hindu and are vegetarian. The only animal proteins they eat are milk and milk based products and eggs. I aim for an average of £1 a meal per person. We could go much lower if we went vegetarian and even lower if we went vegan. The key is minimal processed food and cooking from scratch. We are in our mid 50's. Now when we go out to a restaurant we are usually disappointed as we know we can cook better at home.
Ok, but THAT SWIMSUIT. I love that it’s shorts! Can you add a link? 👀 Also my roommate and I were just saying we need ideas for meal prep, so this was perfect timing 😁
I think that the prices are not realistic depending on the family. I have four teenagers. The portion size of these meals are quite small, and they do have little ones that do eat much.
Do people eat corn as a whole meal? I'm also Canadian and we eat a lot of corn on the cob in the summer but it's always part of a meal, not the entire meal (e.g., we might have burgers and corn as a veggie side dish). I love corn but I wouldn't find it filling enough for a whole meal (or very satisfying).
I know Sarah has made some sourdough videos in the past, but I don't think I've seen one about starter. I tried once, it rose beautifully on the second day then it fell overnight before I fed it again. Despite discarding and feeding it for several more days, it never rose again, it just made a ton of hooch until I finally gave up. I know this is probably a silly question, but does anyone know what I did wrong? 😅
I’ve never used a scale. I’m an eyeballed to a fault sometimes. I make it into a THICK batter. Like it’s hard to mix in and will not drizzle whatsoever. After its done its thing for 12/24 hours whatever cycle you’re doing, it’ll loosen up a lot and be able to drizzle for the most part. I have followed so many recipes and have always ended up like you. Just disregard theirs and just add extra flour and try until it works!
I love your content Sarah and have watched you for YEARS! You especially motivate me in the kitchen, though our foods are super different!!! Keep up the great work🎉
I'm super impressed by how closely this video aligns with my values... usually Poor Man Meals are KD and beans or something! However, how old are your kids that these meals feed everyone? Mine range in ages from 3 to 17 and I'm worried this just won't be enough.
Your bread look so amazing, im a terrible baker, but I am goig to try to make your bun recipe, because it opens up a thousand meal opportunities. Great cooking girl, im impressed and definitely going to try this. big $$$$ win !!
I love this video, and have subscribed! So often these kind of videos feature highly processed foods, and not the most quality ingredients. Affordable and cheap are not the same thing. This is definitely the kind of thing I want to make for my family. Looking forward to more!
Love these meals Sarah! I hope you are getting a website with all these recipes written down somewhere!! I have to listen to them over and over to do the grocery list and then to make them haha it's a bit time-consuming haha! Not a criticism though, just something I would love!
While these are not expensive gourmet meals, they aren’t exactly “poor man”, either. I was expecting something like hacks with 4 boxes of mac n cheese or ways to stretch ramen, or a meal for 7 with 1 lb of ground beef.
In America (California), I pay close to $300 per week for food for my husband, myself, and 8 month old child (and 2 cats). I have to eat incredibly healthy since I struggle with c-ptsd and eating an incredibly healthy diet plays a HUGE role in treating my ptsd. I went on vacation for a week and ate unhealthy (processed food, packaged food, bread with seed oils ect), and after just 5 days I thought I was losing my mind. My ptsd got VERY bad. Went back to eating healthy and exercising and I’m fine now.
California is expensive so do your best! My advice would be to buy meats when they are on sale. Also maybe shop at different stores to shop sales. I would agree that $300 is very high even for Cali. I am in SoCal and pay $250 for my hubby and I for the whole month. Granted we don’t have any special diets, and I shop at a discount store first before going to Aldi. I love Grocery Outlet a ton! Their produce recently has been better than my Aldi with a bigger selection.
@@bridgetteurbano1440 there isn’t a grocery outlet close to me. We are moving to Colorado soon. My husband has a background in hunting, so he’s going to start doing that. Will save us a lot of money in meat.
Hello from Australia, I love your channel!!! I love your style too. Not sure if anyone has mention the pronunciation of WORCESTERSHIRE sauce LOL…….‘wishter-sheer’ is how we say it. Thanks for all you share.
Hola Sarah! I would love to know where to buy your apron or a similar one. It looks light and comfortable, thank you in advance and cheers from Costa Rica!
We have always made the mayonnaise at home (Spain) and could never understand how nobody seemed to make it in US or Canada, at least nobody I knew or saw in videos, they always use the commercial jar one, which in find horrible. You made my day making it! 😅 and it is almost exactly the same! I just use lemon juice instead of vinegar and only olive oil, the softer kind, it tastes so much better imo😊 Loving your swimsuit/bikini❤❤
I'm in the US and I make our mayonnaise. Almost all of the commercial ones are made with soy which I'm allergic to. And all of the ingredients are terrible for you. Saludos desde los Estados Unidos 😊. He aprendido español también.
thanks girl! any freezer meals that are easy that you do? going back to work and need to feed my family but not spend time in the kitchen as much in order to be with my child. xo
Its crazy how 3 chicken breasts feeds a family of 7 with leftovers. I'd cook that for my family of 4 (my youngest doesn't even eat solids yet so really 3 of us) and there would be no leftovers
That's a combo of everyone's different in what they need nutrition wise but also... Portion control plays a huge part. America oversells how much food we need to eat.
@@briannacochran7481 we’re not in the US, we’re in the UK , none of us are overweight, me and my daughter even get described as petite. Must be a metabolism thing. I wasn’t hating, just curious
I am also wondering how little a portion has to be even for the two adults. My husband and I are slim people and we cook almost the same amount of food for our little family of three.🙈
technically the protein in a durum pasta is not considered a complete or high quality protein (i.e. not bioavailable protein) but no biggy 1 or 2 nights a week.
Hmmm... These sound delicious, but I'm second meal in and I don't really find them cheap. Like anything that has big amount of meat in it isn't considered cheap meal in my books... Is anyone feeling the same? Or is 35 dollars for two meals really considered cheap where you live?
First it's Canadian dollars. But I agree. Poor man is ground beef bought on sale and cut with lentils or rice on the buns. The only way that we can afford roasts is by buying meat in bulk so the price per pound is much lower (of course we need to save up a few hundred dollars to do this)
Not buying caviar or dry aged beef, but when it comes to food i always strive for good quality, local, organic products, and they are not cheap, but i don’t save on my healthy expense, because getting sick is far more expensive. If i didn’t have money to buy quality food then i would rather fast.
CRAZY that the first "poor" man's meal includes a HUGE joint of beef!!!! That alone costs more than the ingredients for a meat free meal like bean chili or rice and eggs! Even the eggs are expensive hahaha nuts
Sarah, could you PLEASE SHARE about sunflower oil making your “skin burn”!? Or even an allergy video since you also spoke about dairy. From a personal stand point as a homemaker and not a medical professional. I’ve desperately searched for some others that experience things like this. I’ve done allergy testing etc. dermatology didn’t help at all. I’m very interested in anyone’s experience with reactions, I do take an over the counter allergy medication as well. Haven’t been able to discover the exact cause of the skin burn, intense itch yet that occurs so so randomly. Thank you ❤
I once got a "skin burn" after applying a product that had photosensitive essential oils (like citrus) in it - I then went out into the summer sun for a couple hours - the reaction was intense. Now I can't use those oils, or I break out, even without the sun. I don't know if that helps any? Another tidbit, ingesting oils of any kind reacts to the sun since they turn rancid quickly - I limit my oil intake drastically now.
From what I've seen/lightly researched, seed oils are not good for you and make your skin sensitive to the sun. Most people actually suffer from this if they consume seed oils but aren't aware that that is the cause 😌
@@ChrissyChrissyChrissy333 thank you. Have strange allergy issues with food especially, going to re do tests, but haven’t quite figured out what the main trigger is. Thank you for your input! :)
@@e_m_m_a_a_i_t_k_e_nthat is false information that has been peddled around the internet by various snake oil salesman. There is no actual scientific evidence that seed oil is detrimental to our health (unless over-consumed, as is the case with literally anything)
The 2 lb roast, that you said was used for two nights of meals ( for a family of 7 )…you added at least a pound of it (leftover?) to the ground beef Mexican skillet meal. So just one pound of the roast fed your family of 7 for two nights?🤔
