Oh wow-this is a nice modern twist to the banshee's 2nd lesser known form as the red washerwoman-if you listened to her sing and heeded her warning there was a chance you'd live. She was also more dangerous in that form as well if you got too close to her and her blood-soaked clothes

this is actually based on a really old folkloric belief from several parts of Western Europe about encountering supernatural washerwomen (back when clothes were laundered manually on the banks of rivers or other bodies of flowing water) in the night as they wash ominously bloodstained shrouds, and having them either presage or cause deaths or other misfortunes connected to the unfortunate person who witnesses them, as well as sometimes cursing the witness on the spot to die or be doomed to become one of them (beliefs varied a lot regionally). I think this is the first modernized take on the myth I've ever seen.

In scottish folklore it is called a bean-nighe she is a type of ban-sìth (pronounced as banshee) and there is a way to prevent this death but it's a little to spicy to post on youtube.

Damn! This is one of the best one's I've heard in a long time! If you haven't listened to the whole story yet, don't click "read more" because my comment is going to have a few spoilers. You've been warned. I really like the concept of an old woman singing songs that warn of or predict people's deaths, that's a relatively simple concept to work with, but it's very effective! They set up the story very intelligently, and there's a moment where the dots connect in your mind even before the protagonist finds Laurie's body, and the best part is the protagonist hasn't even made this connection yet. It's frustrating knowing what's going on before the protagonist does. When the old woman predicts B's death, you can make an educated guess as to what she means "Little B wants to fly away, and when she does, her wings will fail her" and it's very frustrating knowing what is being foreshadowed when the protagonist doesn't. This is paid forward when B tells the protagonist she's going to take a plane flight away from the city and the protagonist finally realizes, and you know the type of frustration she must be feeling of knowing what the obvious outcome will be because you've already felt it! That was very well done imo. My favorite part was the ending though. I specifically like how it isn't directly stated what happens to the protagonist, but if you think about what the old woman tells her earlier and what the protagonist says right at the end of the story, you can kind of infer what her fate was. Again, very well done! Very intelligently crafted! Sorry for the long-winded comment, I just had a lot I wanted to say.

Seems pretty obvious she saw who was gonna die and how. Pretty heavily implied that she'd become the next woman in the laundry mat, as only she could see the old lady, and the old lady said she use to be the one to see the lady doing laundry.

Love the story. Side note : I always have to laugh when characters or people bring up their blood sugar 😅 it's like, what is normally described is just what happens when you don't eat for long periods of time 🤷 Those with actual blood sugar issues will straight up drop under the right circumstances, just bam on the ground and unconscious or zero strength. Just a tiny pet peeve 😂 it's up there with mislabeling mental disorders in stories.

I have a family full of diabetics, but I’m adopted so while I have a very different health issue I don’t have diabetes. But being in their life, I do know all about how bad it can get for them. That said, I do get extremely weak and shaky when I don’t eat regularly and my family members have always told me it’s a similar feeling for them…except they go downhill fast from there. Whereas I will just be miserable and weak until I eat. I guess I’m saying it’s still okay for people who aren’t diabetic to say that feeling is a blood sugar thing bc it is. The difference is that we won’t die from it when y’all will.

@@mmmmmmmmaria it’s perfectly normal. It’s called Reactive Hypoglycemia. It’s when someone who doesn’t normally have any issues with diabetes or their blood sugar for some random reason gets a hypoglycemic attack. That person isn’t in any real danger. But they feel like crap. Shaky, lightheaded, faint, until they eat something. But it’s not a permanent condition, like diabetes is. It’s transient. But it’s real and not fully understood and people who have these issues periodically shouldn’t be told not to talk about it just bc it’s not as bad as diabetes.
