I have bought a new windows laptop every two years since 1998 and besides the occasional key popping off and one hard drive failure I had no other problems. I would donate or sell my old laptops and all but one lasted over four years and if not for just being obsolete they would still be running. It amazes me that Louis has been able to make a thriving business repairing Apple computers.

coil == inductor Do the MOSFETs you test for shorts, have built in drain-source protection diodes? If so you would have to note the probe polarity when measuring.

When injecting current, I get that you limit the voltage to that of the lowest rail (i.e. 0.8v, in order to be slightly below vcore), but what do you limit current at on your power supply?

Hi Louis, Have you noticed 820-3609-A Magsafe2 assembly quite often fails when using an magsafe adapter with Magsafe1 PSU? I have 2 cases, and the PSU negative is not connected to motherboard ground while using Magsafe1 and adapter. In an older macbook (pro), PSU neg is directly connected to mobo GND.

Could try filing/cutting down ends of hot tweezers a bit to get greater thermal flow to component

Tweezers seemed to work the second time used, flux helps heaps to get heat transfer from tweezers to component. Louis didn't use any flux when he first attempted to use the tweezers. Tweezers are built narrow, so very slow heat transfer, high losses.

The tweezers are never going to conduct the heat quickly unless the tips can be wetted with solder. Without a perfectly aligned mating surface the heat can only flow directly to the component through a small contact area.

I'm "excited" for Core gen 9 just because that's finally the gen that doesn't have the same hardware-level security risk that the earlier gens had against exploits (Spectre/Meltdown) on the branch speculation/prediction. I don't frequently upgrade either though, I'm watching this on a Core gen 4 (still on DDR3 RAM!) desktop, recently had to buy a laptop and that's gen 8. I personally wouldn't entirely trust benchmarks. For me the visible improvements would be in the number of cores/threads for same price point, TDP expectations (or basically a performance per power measurement, since thermals will kill real performance anyway), and any new "extended instructions" to x86-64.

Couldn't you use one of those temp sensors with the laser to find the hot component? They're only $30 and you wouldn't have to get up to go get it, unless someone yoinks it while you're not looking.

Hello everyone! Hopefully you guys see this comment ! I have a macbook pro retina 13 early 2015 and this has a weird problem. The macbook only works properly when connected to a external monitor using the thunderbolt port and if I disconnect it while work for about 5 second and then the mousepad and keyboard will stop freeze and the backlight would start to dim away. Do you guys have any solutions?

Fixing a Chromebook to board level would be more then a Chromebook is worth. So unless you've saved some hyper critical data to one it is worthless hence no videos of it done.. Louis's board repair is still cheaper then apple replacing your logic board plus if your ssd is a soldered one you keep your data hence he's so busy.

HI thank you very much, you helped me to solve the problem by following the steps you did. I found a short at the F7000 fuse. I removed it to separate (PPBUS_G3H and PPVBAT_G3H_CHGR_REG) and identify the side it has the problem with, pin 2 is OK, but pin 1 is shorted. I injected 5VDC to identify the component that is going to get heated. I noticed that all the components are cold. I measured PIN 1 a second time. I was surprised that the short circuit disappeared. !!! without changing any component. i assembled my mac and everything is ok. work good. Can you explain to me why the short is disappeared just after the injection of 5VD. it's like he was asleep and I woke him up. sorry for my english, I folow you from Morocco. thanks

I know this is an old video, sorry, but I have this machine and there seems to be no power so I want to be sure... In the last few minutes of your video when you talk about all the PB' s being supplied by the 20v line, when you say "inject" and "power supply to .8 volts" are you talking about your ohm meter? I just have a normal hand held digital fluke with a 9v battery. Should I not use that to check for a short? Am I ok to test for a short to ground and for power? Also, in the beginning I can't tell if you are measuring across the cap or test points. Thanks! I just want to make sure the battery is or isn't the problem really so I don't want to jack it up. If it's not the battery, I may send it to you... unless you have a contact in the SF bay, peninsula area! Thanks! UPDATE: I saw another video of yours with more detail on this problem and I get the injection idea now. Michael Wellman is it really so hard to understand that that doesn’t matter if there’s no software to run on it? Not everyone needs a gaming desktop. Some people NEED MacOS, be it for coding, portable video editing, music production, or any other professional software unavailable in Windows and/or Linux, and as a main work machine, Hackintoshes aren’t exactly known for reliability. No one gives a shit that you can build a more powerful computer if said powerful computer doesn’t fit their needs at all Also, “I can build a pc laptop”? Now that’s a bold claim right there
