In 2025, the tunnel construction machines will start in the main tunnel. At the same time, material logistics will go into full operation. Civil engineer Tobias Griessmair explains the challenges involved in transporting 7.4 million tonnes of rock.
Around 7.4 million tonnes of rock will be excavated for the construction of the second Gotthard road tunnel. A large proportion of this will be reused, for tunnelling and various renaturation projects, among other things.
