Aaron Brooks of Penn State wrestles Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State for the 184-pound national title at the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Subscribe to the NCAA Championship RU-vid channel: ru-vid.com...
That's how you finish a match when you're down. That guy Hidlay is though as nails. Must guys don't even try and just go throw the motions. Cael is like some evil wrestling genius. Amazing coach.
@@shimmzalmighty6641 which nearly 100% of wrestlers in the exact same situation as Brooks was in, would do the exact same thing, especially with the National Championship on the line.
Terry Brands, Cael Sanderson, and John Smith are all olympic medalist. 2 gold medalist and Terry brands is one of the greatest usa wrestlers not to get a gold medal. As far as pure technique, I think John smith is the best. You cannot go wrong with any of the 3.
As an ubiassed Minnesota fan I think Brooks should have won regardless with the near fall points but he also should have given up a stalling point. Iffy officiating in this one.
Just going on all night. watch the RBY match - to see that match go to OT on 3 stall calls with one set up by the other guy pushing RBY out of bounds. Terrible. I didn't see this match but heard the stall call in the fracas and though "ghee, I guess they're just screwing everyone".
It was NOT the stalling call that decided the match. Brooks decided to wrestle the entire match, while Hidlay decided to keep his ass on the line and stall the entire match, except the last 14 seconds where he had way too much energy to be running after Brooks that way. Otherwise, getting ahold of Brooks leg was extremely lucky. Even if in the middle of the mat, he wouldn't have been able to finish that takedown. To sum up, it was Hidlay's decision to stall so much. Brooks was just a much better wrestler.
Stalling calls are hurting these championships. Both are great wrestlers, and I'm a Penn State fan so rooting for Aaron, but Hidlay has a right to feel the call against him was too quick.
@@jakbear You can't be serious! Tell me, what did Hidlay do in that match? He backed up the whole match. You can't just back up until the last 30 seconds of a match and expect to win! In addition, let's say the refs don't miss any calls during this match, then Brooks gets those 2 back points that he should've got and then hitting him with a stall call at the end of the match would have meant nothing for Hidlay because Brooks would still win by 2
Even if Brooks gave up a point out of bounds for grabbing the mat, he would have been tied. He owned the mat the whole time. I dont think hed have cared if it was tied. He would have gotten through in OT
This match was highly upsetting. I'm still annoyed. A NCAA finals match decided by a stalling call is just blatantly disrespectful to both wrestlers. I wouldn't want to win OR lose in that fashion.
I just realized RBY's left hand got caught in Fix's singlet in the replay at the beginning. I'm glad they didn't try to throw some grabbing the singlet nonsense in there.
Same reason there wasn't 2 near fall points for Brooks earlier in the match. If everything is officiated correctly, Brooks still wins! Hidlay cannot wrestle passively, defensively for 2.5 periods and expect to win the match.
Can someone please explain this "Independent review" for call challenges? Seems weird to me, how is it independent, and if we don't know who is making the call how are they really accountable? I see the reasoning, but I would like to know how exactly it works if someone knows.
I agree Brooks should have been hit for fleeing the mat at the end, but Hidlay also should have been DQ'd by stalling warnings before the 3rd period started.
If u think that stalking call wasn’t warranted you don’t know wrestling, the ref gave him so many chances and he was on the edge the entire match and didn’t have a single piece of offense that’s a late call if anything but a good one
The fact that Hidlay got called for 2 stalls when he was the only one taking shots is a joke. I see 1 shot for the entire 7 minutes from Brooks. But based on how awful the officiating was at this tournament, it wasnt a total shock
@@raybocchino8050 Since you think that Hidlay is the only one who shot during this match... (Nice try to put misleading info out there) Match recap Period 1 recap Trent Hidlay backed out of bounds 4 times Period 2 Aaron starts on bottom, Trent attempts to pull Aaron out of bounds and is thrown to his back, no backs awarded. Scored 2 Rev 1 ES They start neutral Brooks fires off 4 unanswered shots, Hidlay backs off the mat twice. Period 3 Brooks releases Hidlay, 1 escape Hidlay stands out of bounds not returning until Brooks shoots him out of bounds. Hidlay backs up toward the line off the restart whistle, Brooks shoots again and Hidlay goes off the mat. :34 seconds left and Brooks continues to stalk Hidlay at the restart whistle. Hidlay dives in on a single, Brooks stuffs the head and attempts to kick out, his hand touches completely off the mat ending the sequence. NC State challenges, but Brooks hand touched off The mat. With 14 seconds remaining, Hidlay begins to pursue Brooks. The match ends 3-2 Brooks
You have two opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of fun wrestlers to watch and boring wrestlers to watch. I had a feeling Brooks was going to win when I was bored watching this match throughout most of it. He controlled the pace. Rooting for Hidlay this year.
Terrible inconsistent calls.Where is the strike zone? 1 penalty point for sprawling on the mat. No stall call for attempting to break the triple jump world record out of bounds? The championships need bigger mat space.
@@flyfi41 Both wrestlers feet were completely OOB before the reversal, I didn't even notice that, refs could've easily missed it at first, but should've been noticed after review.
When was the 1st stalling call on Hidlay? In the 3rd period Hidlay takes a shoot at 1:40 and 1:30 remaining. Neither shoots for the next 30 sec and Brooks takes 2 shoots in a row and they call Hidley for stalling. Mean while Brooks literally runs for the last 20 seconds and there is no call.
Brooks got called for stalling in the last stretch, pay better attention... doesn’t matter anyway he was the aggressor all match long and it was only a warning
@@Arcey333 he was the aggressor all match long? did you see the last 30 seconds? that's still part of the match, and he didn't even get a warning for fleeing the mat and then running like a banshee!
They should have given Brooks two near fall points earlier in said match. I counted 3 seconds. So, two near fall should have been awarded for Brooks. Hidlay stalled the first two and a half periods, though.
Definitely agree with back points as well I think college would benefit from a momentum rule like freestyle shot clock etc. I just think it needs it personally they've changed alot already I don't think one more rule would change much and would eliminate people stalling out on feet for 2 min
Also rule would reward their aggression instead of depending on ref trying to get the stall calls which we all know 1st always gets awarded but how many times do u see the second but either way great tourney and love to see people threw around their views I love wrestling
The Penn state dude had to be dragged back because he was using the boundaries to get out of trouble instead of wrestling. That’s far worse than the questionable stalling call.
A lot harder to recruit when the nations best guys are 50% located within an hour of penn state. Not the point though. State is getting better. They are not a penn state level program yet, but compared to where we were 8 years ago, we have made massive progress. So keep disrespecting us because adversity fuels fires and breeds motivation.
@@goldenhawkalumni5341, you have Pennsylvania wrestlers and still lost. It's all about the coaching. Cael is on the top tier, then there's everybody else beneath him. You can't handle the truth. If the Hidlays were wise enough to attend Penn State they would have been multiple NCAA Champions by now. Hayden regressed.
@@youarerightboss, Cael is the best and I’m not denying that. However, not everyone who goes to Penn State wins titles. And also, we do have some PA wrestlers, but a lot of our team is from weird areas in the country. Bullard are Georgia. Renan is Texas. Cates is North Carolina. Camacho is Connecticut. And so on. As for Hayden, he hasn’t regressed, but he has been figured out. If he comes back, he’ll need to stop relying on his underhook. I’m objective. Also, programs take time to build. Penn State may have never won a title pre-2010, but you guys had been building up for years with talent. Cael becoming the coach put you guys to another level. Pre-Pop, we had a champion every ten years, but not one conference title for over 20 years prior. In short, we sucked. Enjoy your victories, but be gracious in doing so. It’s not like we ever did anything to you.
@@youarerightboss, mission accomplished. With that understood, that was a hell of a statement you guys sent yesterday. Iowa may be the best team, but your teams YOUNG YOUNG. It will be insane to see the continued progression from those that didn’t too the podium yesterday. And while I hope next year we can get a state guy or two to beat one of yours in the final, your teams future has never looked brighter. Also, any penn state guys wrestling at the Olympic trials?
The NC State Kid wrestled passively, defensively on the edge of the mat the whole match. In the second period, he gave up a reversal and OBVIOUS 2 near fall points to Brooks that was not called. So, NO the NC State Kid did not & should not have won the match.
What I find ridiculous is: 1) the ref called stalling with 1 min left in a national title match. Why did they feel they needed to insert themselves. Beside its highly debatable if he was even stalling. 2) brooks started running at the 1 min mark. The refs never even called a warning for stalling on Brooks? 3) as they went out of bounds books grabbed the side of the matt. I mean- isn’t that the definition of stalling. 4) lastly, how is it that the commentators never even commentated on any of this?
@@bradtodd3832 i totally agree. but i still think hidlay should have gotten called for stalling in the second and then maybe a fleeing the mat on brooks in the third. would have been a fun overtime. i do think brooks is the better wrestling though. if you watch the RBY match you know the stalling call is pretty inconsistent.
@@tannermarriott8903 Yeah very inconsistent, also, when and where have you seen any of the ole refs calling a fleeing the mat call? I like when that rule was supposed to be enforced, but nobody calls it, ever..
how that isnt a stall at the end is completely beyond me. hes full on running away from hidlay. All of the Penn State wrestlers besides Lee did this. What a joke
@@freeninj1369 agreed. They’re just mad that Penn State went for four last season and now I’ve gone by five this year and come back to win the championship again.
