they were indeed. that was the time where i still skated, love the memories. it was all about borrowing eachothers vhs skatevideos, skate magazines with these motion pictures of tricks, people still putting their favorite music to their video footage which added a little personality, big shoes, baggy pants. it felt more private and geniune. it's crazy how everything changes, now everyone's on instagram and it's all about lifestyle and presenting yourself. but every generation says that, so i guess i'm just getting old :D
icedink87 they were definitely less technically sound, that's true. there was also less game-of-skate-style skating, less contests (or at least less focus on street contests), the style has definitely changed. i felt people shredded a little harder back then tho, doing huge rails, huge stairs, like ali bulala's 25 or jamie thomas leap of faith. however, i can't remember anyone of the older generation that would be able of what the likes of nyjah huston or shane o'neill nowadays pull of consistently, for example.
ali never landed that set. yes it was a cool that he tried.. but its no landmark in the history of skating. Talk about 'the boss' and his legendary frontside sets would be more appropriate..
In 2001 Guy:hey your pretty good what's your name? Arron:.....MY NAME IS ARRON KYRO AND IM A SPONSORED SKATEBOARDER FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA guy: uh I'm bob
@P Rivacy Lol I'm 32 and used to skate a bunch when I was in high school. We even had a small skate park right behind our school. Halfpipe and all. I was able to varial at one point but that was the best trick i could do lol. Used to love skating the town with friends always wonder how everyone is doing.
He just needs to rest it and not skate and do some rehab on it for a little. people do far much worse like tear acls and other things and they get back to doing crazy stuff. hes just not down to risk getting it injured again. but honestly if he just does some rehab on it. it will be fine
I can't decide if these videos are inspiring or frustrating me. I'm still trying to land a god darn Ollie and he board keeps landing at a 90 FS angle. If I get the board to lift off that is.
I noticed what has helped with my Ollie's alot make sure you stand straight up right and bend your back knee when you pop and shoot your back foot right back while you slide your front foot forward.
try holding onto something like a railing and then get the motion down then once you get the motion down try to ollie while your rolling and itll help to teach your body to stay straight when you pop it and also if you have having trouble popping your ollie just put your feet in the position and try jumping as high as you can using only your backfoot and you will get the motion down its all about repitition hope these tips helped
this is why I love the skateboard community! You guys are about helping a beginner, whereas in any other sport it's just about competition. Thank you for your comments/advice. I think the problem is my front foot, I slide it up just fine and everything stays straight, but when it is time to level my front foot on the board in the air, it just naturally turns to a forward pointing direction. I can't fix it even when forcing myself not to do it. but now I am getting a few straight ollies, maybe 2 out of 10. I will try every single piece of advice here and see what helps. Thank you!
hey aaron you rock and i think what you do with braille and skateboarding with kids and helping lance get better as he progresses is all collectively an inspiraton to kids everywhere and really people learning to skateboard in general. and the skate everythings are funny as well to watch but you keep it real by focusing on skateboarding i just wanted to say i really appreciate what you do and im just starting skateboarding myself again and your vids not only serve as an inspiration but a great way to learn and encourage myself to keep skating hard and also entertaining to watch. and the clique is also great too! Gab, Doug, Lance, Carlos, Garret! yall are all great just felt like i really needed to say that.. im 22 years old and starting to skate again and your videos are awesome. never a dull moment. they really have helped me get out there and not be afraid to skate around as much as possible and most importantly COMMIT! btw ive subbed to all you guys i think yall really deserve it. im just another fan i know but from miles away i am still just as inspired as if i was right there skating with you guys... Much Respect.
wow good to see that Aaron has really been skating for a long time as his other vids say. & he's been pretty damn good for a long time too. This vid reveals a lot more about his skill level than his tutorial videos show
Was 4 years old when he did it.. wow. And for all those who weren't even born, in Germany we would say: "Back then you were still Quark im Schaufenster!" :D
Believe it or not I was 53. I'm now retired with grandchildren. I remember going to the opening of Surf City in 1965, every trick was a new trick. Thumbs up for us old skaters.
Aaron, seriously we ALL woild like to refresh some of those old memories. Please skate and explore other stuff like stairs and handrails again. Ppease you tell us all to push ourselves, then why dont you #pushyourself ?
What a nostalgic period ! It brings me/us back to end of 90s ! Didn't knew this song but it's SOOO 100% this period and feel very nostalgic! love it.! really love this video. Oh damn, éS Creager shoes !!!!! My 1st sk8 shoes, weird to see those ones after all those years
yes but that was 18 years ago, and i think i heard somewhere that he got injured or something and doesnt want to risk it and not be able to skate anymore
I can't be the only one thinking this, but what the hell happened? I mean you were great absolutely amazing. And now your still good but definitely don't do anything close to this. And don't say age is the reason because there is a lot of people that still skate like this even at your age.
30 year old coming back to skateboarding after about 15 years away from it. This video brought back so much nostalgia it’s unreal. I had that exact same blind switchblade deck, which I skated to death around 2001-02.
I feel like Aaron needs to show off more in his videos. I've seen his ability and bag of tricks, both of which are HUUGE! It seems like he just doesn't want to go hard in a lot of the videos he makes? I saw someone said something about a leg injury? Does that have something to do with it?
There is simply no reason for him to go "hard". He has nothing to prove to anyone. He has a business involving his passion and his focus is exactly were it needs to be.
He used to do tricks all the time, a lot of tricks, practice makes perfect, but all this work messed up his ankles, so now he can't go "hard" anymore, he doesn't skate as much and as hard as when he was young. He can't.
+Bacon Senpai LOL Aaron is a fucking monster., got sponsors and whatnot what did you think this was? Why do you think he chose a tiger on his deck for Revive.
Its sad how he lost almost all of his sponsors back then just because he makes videos on youtube, if he didnt made videos he could be bigger than now like skating next to Joey Brezinski
+Braille Skateboarding mad respect Aaron, I am 27 and stopped skating for 10 years.....shit happens. watching your videos has made it alot easier to get back into skating with out being completely lost. keep doing your thing brother
That's so sick man, no wonder your hella good lol, make a skate movie like grind, that was a really good movie, in junior high I rented it from Hollywood video and saw it 20 times and would come back to rent it until I eventually bought it and over watched it again lol
No I was against weed until 4 years ago when I noticed my suicidal depression and chronic anxiety was no longer noticeable, I was like well what do you know they were right it does help lol I thought it was all BS
Holy crap that just reminded me. When I hung out with my buddy when we were kids and skated we would always go to hollywood video and rent a skating movie that had awesome tricks and a bunch of skating flipbook (stop motion) animations. If you know what movie I'm talking about please tell me because I would love to watch it again. I can't seem to find it online.
Brings back memories. I was skating hard like this around 89-92. Back when skate shoes were only available in skate shops...Air walk, Vans, Chukka Boots. Anybody remember the Burger King Whopper graphic board? Had that slick plastic stuff on the bottom. First time you tried a nose or tail slide, you slid the fu** off and on your ass. The last board I had was made by Milk.
Hey Aaron I’m 30 yrs old and I skateboarded for about 7 yrs when I was younger I quit skating and watching your videos has inspired me to pick it back up again I ordered a board and am waiting for it ! There’s so many new brands or boards trucks bearings etc from when I was skating it’s almost impossible to pick a board out now lol back in the day I would just open up ccs magazine and order one but now it seems there’s a billion new company’s lol best of luck to you and i can’t wait till my board comes
i dont understand why skaters nowadays think they need a fisheye lense..this vid was badass as shit and the old style fish lense was here and there but it wasnt good
I think because it's easier to get a subject from head to toe in full frame using fish eye and wide angle lenses. I hate what it does to videos though. Also, some of the shots in this video weren't even fish-eye lenses. I think they just framed with paper cutouts or something for it to look like fish-eye. You can see the cardboard moving sometimes, lol.
wow its strange watching and realizing its 16 years old. gotta admit i miss those days back then. sure more tech has made life easier but not in all ways.
There are not many grand masters of skateboarding, one of them is Rodney, obviously and one of them is Aaron. It takes some serious dedication and passion combined with a wise mind to teach skateboarding like they have done.
All the kiddies talking shit about Mongo, it was the norm to push Mongo going fakie/switch. Watch any parts from the late 90s/early 2000's. Koston, JB Gillet, Enrique Lorenzo, etc. pretty much all pros did it aside from a few like Mariano or Tom Penny.
I feel like people only hate on it as a remnant from the 00's decade when skating had a bunch of posers who focused more on how you look rather than the actaul skating
When I skate switch, yes I push mongo. I started skating in 1997 and back then it was normal to push mongo for switch. Only much later on new kids coming up started calling it "gay". Funny, back in the late 90's kids also called varial flips "gay" and not many did them. Always something kids are hating on.
I came here because I was looking for the trick on 3:20 .. that's the trick Aaron was talking about in the Bungee Cord video.. I just found out how great Aaron is.. amazing vid
God how great is it to be living in a time where you can make your own videos and support your dreams in new ways older generations would have wished for this.
Oliver Pantoga-Montoto Does matter, jaws is a gnar dog. You can't call someone a gnar dog if they are strictly tech. Come on man.. there's opinions.. then there's straight up ignorance. Back to the drawing board with you.
I feel Aaron would win definitely. Andy has hurt himself so much, it's really set him back. I doubt he'll ever skate as good as he used to now that his company is pretty much settled in and he's got a family, it'll be more of a hobby now than a dedication. He's settling down, and it's kinda disappointing, but it's understandable and at least he's happy.
This was such a fun time in life. Most of this footage was used in the first shop video, when Aaron skated to Guns n Roses. Kind of beautiful when you think of it now. It would be awesome to go through the tapes upon tapes of old footage and post it somewhere. I just came across a shoe box full of mini dvs from basically 1999-2004
I think with this Clip in 2001 (now 2014 ) You Could have Got a profesional Sponsor like DC , Etnies , plan B , Zoo York , but you didn't so I ASK myself why ? Sorry for My Englisch im 12 and German :D Please answer
