Abandoned Circuit Nivelles Baulers - Was it a boring race track?
In this Circuits of the past video, we’re looking for an answer to the question: Was the Nivelles Circuit a boring race track?
The Nivelles Circuit in Belgium opened in 1971 as a safer alternative for old Spa-Francorchamps. The track was designed by Dutchman John Hugenholtz, who also designed great circuits like Suzuka and Jarama.
Nivelles hosted the Belgian Grand Prix twice, in 1972 and 1974. Both races were won by Emerson Fittipaldi. However, soon the circuit was in financial trouble and could not host Formula One races anymore. It finally closed in 1981.
After the closure it was often used for illegal racing. Attempts to revive the circuit sadly failed and in 1998 the demolition of the abandoned circuit started. Today the site is a buisiness park.
The circuit of Nivelles is often depicted as a flat and boring circuit, mostly by people who never drove on the track. But is dat actually true? In this video we give you the answer.
In the video you see urbex footage of several visits to the abandoned race track. Also photos of my 1998 visit to Nivelles, when I explored the circuit for the first time.
