This is like a "Holy Grail", Special Sauce type tip! I played around with this technique for a couple hours now, and I've come up with 3 totally unique tracks. Thanks for sharing this. This has pretty much eliminated my fear of sampling. I've always been hesitant because I didn't want to sound "Unoriginal," but this is a game changer.

I use this technique when working on soundpacks, but I generally have not laid the notes out, but rather play them and feel for beats/atmospheres. Going to have to try this for SURE! Absolutely FANTASTIC tutorial. Thumbs up!

you can add a Max LFO to control the start point of one or more notes, then each time it's gonna get a different part of the song. SICK!

cool. the trick would be to get something interesting and more complex, with at least a 4 bar measure, it's too static as a 1 bar measure. also, you've got all those envelope and routing options.

Neat tip. This technique has been around for ages in the tracker community though. Fun to see the same idea applied in a different environment.

Try putting different effects on different Drum Rack cells and adjust the loop end points as well. It'll get even more interesting!

Used a similar technique on a tribute remix I did a while back. I just put the melodic bed over a beat and bass. Ofcourse the way I used it was more of an overdub. Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You (Sergiu Nadasan Tribute Mix)

There's a good reason for his the controlorless part of his technique. Back in the day - in the mid 90s - he started with Acid Pro, which is the same DAW I got my start on back in 96. There was no midi in ACID as I recall - only audio. You would literally paint paint the wave files. I didnt get my first midi control until 2004, when I bought Live 4.

i can remember that while you still were at PointBlank you did a video with Vocal Chopping in Logic's Ultrabeat where u used a similar technique with the Sample Startpoint - that equals the Sample Offset of Abletons Audioclips. Im not very well known at RU-vid nor do i have any releases at all - but as i started using Ableton Live years ago i already used this method without knowing that theres a name for it lol :) Its really old, but its the best way of doing chops in Live in my opinion. Try combining this with the different Sample-Loop Settings in Simpler and adjust the Envelopes - use the Gate to filter out bits and pieces and use some effects with short Decays or a subtle Dry/Wet - when resample the whole stuff and layer it with different versions of the same original Chops ... you end up with worlds of different sounds from just a few different sample startpoints of the same sample in the End :-) For me this creative way of working in Live was my go for moving from Cubase to Ableton Live back in the days ...

Hi Danny, as always great tutorial. I would like to ask you a question. I there a way to control the decay time of drum samples via it's velocity values? Example: Let's say i have a hihat drum pattern playing va simpler and want to control the the decay time of the drum sample being controlled via its velocity values.

Yes it's kind of cheating compared to playing/programming everything but it's great fun and still valid as a compositional technique.
@paradiddle16
@paradiddle16 10 лет назад
There's nothing that prevents anybody from playing let's say a drumbeat by hand and mixing it with this technique.
@CptNelson
@CptNelson 9 лет назад
"I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using pre-made skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I haven't made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all."

Great video! I got a question for you. I am used to only arrangement view and I am now learning how to make music using clip view. You dropped multiple instances into each drum rack in order to build your track. How do you record that? For instance I have 5 clips loaded into drum rack and when I go to record I get a recording of 5 midi tracks on one single channel. This makes it hard to edit I am finding. Is this how you would do it?

Get a push 2 it's worth the money trust me or mk3. Or any controller. It helps with creative sounds. And sample flipping.
@themadsamplist
@themadsamplist 9 лет назад
I use kinda simular technique with the fruity slicer in FL. It doesn't have to be in tempo with your track even. But if you want to do that right you do have to program some drums first, then start fooling around with individual tempo's of the sample slices. That way you can get insane sounds

@thegroove2000 10 лет назад
eh? i was doing that on the Atari st man. Its Just midi editing.
@musicprotutorials
@musicprotutorials 10 лет назад
It's not just Midi editing.. and you wouldn't have been able to do this on Atari ST without a hardware sampler AND it's doubtful that sample would have had enough memory to hold the whole song at CD quality either. This technique is all about using a complete song, triggering notes FIRST and then adjusting sample start point until you find something interesting. It's back to front compared to the processes i've seen and used where samples are chopped FIRST and then triggered.
@atomaalatonal

its basically granular synthesis?
@PhozMix

No as there is no granular sampling.. ie sampling grains of the frequency spectrum as opposed to this technique which is just another way to go about sampling.

I just never saw anyone work this way.. ie..notes first.. then finding a point in the sample.. everyone I know did it the other way.. chop the sample first.. then trigger - and usually live too, playing it in.. not 'painting it in'

Wow, I feel really cynical right now. This isn't that amazing of a technique to me in the least... I'm not a pro but I've always come at music with creativity- not blowing my mind with any of this. Sidechain compression???
