I’d be interested in seeing these tests in Live 12 when it comes out. Apparently it’s not crashing as much for people who are in the beta and I wonder if that means there’s other performance enhancements with the update. I know for myself upgrading to 11 from 10 was a huge step back in performance.

Will the 14” MBP M3 Max 14 core CPU 36gb Ram be sufficient? I know you have the 16 core CPU 48gb Ram. Just wondering should I order the same configuration you have as I will be keeping this laptop for 5-10 years. Coming from a 2013 MBP so it’ll be a great upgrade.

Have you tried the test without the performance monitor running and the screen capture app. From my past as a SysAdmin doing performance tuning and troubleshoot in servers we saw how performance monitor chewed up quite a bit of CPU too. The screen capture is probably chewing up CPU cycles too.
@bjornark

Yeah, its not taking up that much actually since OBS (screenrecording) is using hardware (GPU) to encode the video. Still its stealing some CPU cycles but not a lot.

Great thanks for doing the comparison test. I didn't manage to see the M3 Macbook Max CPU meter % and the Ableton CPU % Meter - Do you have some numbers for this on the most intensive part of the song? On the M2 Max the audio buffer seemed to fail at 100% and on the M3 Max it seemed to hit a 74% maximum. Assuming the M3 max would also fail at 100% you're getting only 26% more performance? It was all at 32 samples wasn't it?

This is really helpful to see. I have my 2019 16” i9 MPB which kicks on its obnoxious fan when I open one instance of Omnisphere inside of logic with very few other things going on. I’m definitely considering moving to a 14” MBP, just trying to figure out which one to get. I do a lot of dance music production but also a decent amount of film focused composition, so a decent mix of sample libraries and software synths. Originally was thinking m3 pro, but after seeing your content I see what the top tier m3 max is capable of. This machine seems crazy capable.

Just a side note, the M3 Ultra will not(!!!) double the performance. On the M1 and M2, the Ultra only added about 50% more performance. The interconnect just isn't able to scale performance linearly. The big advantage of the Ultra in the Mac Studio is fan noise, even on crazy projects, you wont hear it. (completely irrelevant on normal projects or if you produce with headphones)
@bjornark
@bjornark 7 месяцев назад
Ah, I stand corrected.
@AaronFigFront
@AaronFigFront 7 месяцев назад
Depending on the tasks, M2 Ultra is more than 50%, it can be at best 70% better than the max version. M2 fixed some micro-architecture design flaws that M1 family had so that M2 can utilize resources much better.

Great I found this! Although I'm absolutely stupid regarding audio and I work as web developer (and 3D as my hobby) this is a perfect real life example. Planning to get M3 Max 14" (14/30). I think it might become louder when GPU is used by with my use it wouldn't be an issue. This is a REAL testing, not those „reviewers“ running crazy benchmarks which have only one goal, to tax whole system to maximum. Which is out of touch with reality. I saw previous video of one guy in real Final Cut project and he has to do quite a lot to make fans spinning loudly, too. But FCP is mainly heavy on GPU
@bjornark

As someone who is using Apple M3 Pro, i think theres a problem on Abletons side, I am running into alot of idling as in ableton will just stop and load if i just want to move a track around, zoom in/out, and also dealing with crashes. Keep in mind im not pushing ableton nearly as high as he is in this video, running a few tracks with no plugins at a higher buffer size is still causing these issues. Looks like we just have to wait until ableton releases some sort of fix for adaptability for newer M chips @@givezaid

So basically Apple is more worried about fan noise than the longevity of the very expensive computer you bought. I've spent the past 25 years building and repairing both PC's and MAC and i don't care what the company tells you, anything over 90'c is very hard on the hardware and 100'c is unthinkable. The hottest my Intel 16 core CPU gets is 65-70'c, but mine has a custom loop water (mostly glycol actually) cooling system.
@bjornark
@bjornark 5 месяцев назад
Yeah Apple have always been running ther sillicon near max TDP. Technically the CPU should work this way. But I agree with you, its too hot. However, Apple have gotten better in this regard compared to the 16-Inch Intel i9 fiasco for example.
@Teluric2
@Teluric2 4 месяца назад
The thing here is just what techie said. If you put a capable cooler the mac wont look nice and they prefer to make the think good looking If you use a thermometer it will show 7 celsius colder because the metal case will insulate some degrees. Apple would be glad to see your mac gets fried. The fact that the fans are spinnkng doesnt mean they dont need to be cooled.

U-he said long time ago: Our multi core feature is optimized for Intel processors. Although it works on the M1 processors, it's currently not as efficient as on Intel machines. So far we found that there are only very few scenarios in which multi core would be needed on an M1. One scenario would be if you run at very high sample rates with very small buffer sizes, use high quality settings in Diva and play all available voices with long release times. In such a scenario, it can still be beneficial to overall performance to activate Diva's multi core button for this particular instance of Diva. The general rule for the multi core button on Apple's awesome Silicon machines is: No need for the multi core button in most situations, as host and system can handle the load easily. Only activate it selectively for particular, CPU intense instances that play lots of voices with high quality settings.

Yes, this is what I mostly based my statements on in earlier videos. However it seems like: "Only activate it selectively for particular, CPU intense instances that play lots of voices with high quality settings." was the correct case of the first track in this video. Maybe when I did the benchmark videos the patch used on diva in the benchmark test was too simple so that the multicore button did not have any effect.
