About mentoring

Our medical students get involved in the community. Brian Cedeño is one of the students who takes that to the next level. Brian is well known for mentoring, but he’s also been involved in a variety of projects to advocate for, and improve, community health.
This year, our school chose Brian as recipient of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Service Award. Brian was nominated by John McCarthy, M.D., assistant dean for rural programs. He got to know Brian in part through his work to address discrimination in school, a project we wrote about in the past. You can find a link to that story on our profile page.
All the UW Health Sciences schools celebrated their recipients last Thursday. We were all set to interview Dr. McCarthy and Brian, when Dr. McCarthy pointed out Leo Morales, M.D., assistant dean in the @UWMedicine Office of Healthcare Equity. Brian, the student who mentors so many others, had one of his own mentors in attendance!
In this video, Dr. Morales talks about how he first met Brian during Brian’s freshman year as a UW undergraduate. And both men talk about the importance of mentoring. We’ll be following up with another video about mentoring, but we thought you might enjoy this mini-profile of one of your future doctors here in Washington.
