I have traditionally watched Its A Wonderful Life every Christmas/New Years Eve going back to my childhood in the 1980s, when local tv stations in NYC would play it every night during the winter holiday season (sometimes two or three stations would be playing it at the same time!) before NBC and Ted Turner brought the rights. Thank you for articulating its long lasting appeal to me in a way I could have never. It IS my favorite time travel film for the reasons you laid out!!
