Even an easy VFR leg like this first one has it's challenges as we have to decide whether to go on top of or below a cloud deck, avoid antennas, and dodge some building thunderstorms.

Portions of ATC communication and the flight have been edited. This video is not instructional in any way. I am not a CFI. I am sharing my experience and thoughts about this flight and this should be taken as entertainment only. By sharing mistakes and accomplishments alike, hopefully the aviation community will benefit.

I have always wanted to see more footage like this of experienced pilots navigating weather in VFR conditions, identifying clouds, making decisions on altitude and best path to avoid weather. It's not clickbaity hype excitement so I get why many don't cover this aspect of flying, but it sure is valuable. My first 100 hours of XC have been a lot of figuring out these kinds of flights, and I need all the models to follow I can get! Thanks man.

3CK. I’ve spent a lot of time at that airport. I just passed my commercial multi checkride last November there. Glad to see you guys at one of my local airports.

So I passed my commercial checkride about a month ago and my DPE asked me, "how do you know if you're 500' below the clouds?" I told him you have to use your best guess based on mental calculations. He said "want to know the real way? Go up and touch the clouds then descend 500 below that." He basically said what Jason said, use your best judgement to be safe.

Credit to your honesty about flying below the deck. I have always operated that way. Also in a fairly scattered base like you have there are less places for a plane to hide.

Fun fact: the tallest antennas and buildings in the US are 2000ft (AGL). So, at 3000ft AGL you shouldn't even have to worry about them in the US

91.159 - .....VFR in level cruising flight more than 3,000 feet above the surface shall maintain the appropriate altitude... I think you were good at 3500 since 3ck has a field elevation of 887. Of course, I don't know where you were when that call was made, but as long as the MSL was 500 or more, you were good. I'm just a PPL though, so let me know if I'm misinterpreting something though.
@nicholaskida

Of course when I say MSL was 500 or more, I'm referring to the surface elevation..
@watashiandroid8314
@watashiandroid8314 Год назад
In my experience people seem to forget about that exception. Also that the altitude rules only apply to cruise flight.
@jackbrainassociates8806
@jackbrainassociates8806 Год назад
I understand your thinking on the altitude, but given the airplane you are flying I don’t agree. Full disclosure I have over 1000 hours in a P210 (I own one currently). The airplane does its best in the low flight levels, even with headwind’s. This solves all the problems of almost all ground bases obstacles as well as helps identify any problem weather. This is just my opinion and your decisions all seemed to be spot on. It’s just the way I would fly my P210.

Zoleo and garmin are great but adding a monthly cost bothers me. T-Mobile and starlink just announced a free upcoming service that uses starlink satellite in areas without cell coverage. You can use your regular cell phone and no need to buy an extra device and worry about battery on another device. This will affect the prices of these other devices. They’ll have to reduce them.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey Год назад
That may be rolled out in the future for phones and it will be cool but right now this is what is actually available. The ability to push 1 button and have help come is essential for me in case of a rough off airport landing (crash). Perhaps prices will come down- we will see what happens. Competition is always good for the marketplace.

I thought westward travel is "even plus 500" for cruise altitude? Why is the flight at 3,500? Couldn't there be airplanes coming the other way? Is 3500 OK because ATCC is involved?
@watashiandroid8314
@watashiandroid8314 Год назад
The rule does not apply below 3000 AGL IIRC.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey Год назад
Yes it is. We asked ATC if 3500 was ok in this case and they said yes.
