Sick Passengers, a questionable runway, and a couple diversions get us off track from our planned 8 hour flying trip up to the Gorge Amphitheater to see Dave Matthews Band. Trying to make it before sunset and to meet the RV rental at the airport, we get set back on our journey and have to improvise.

You couldnt hear FSS because you were on the wrong frequency. The FLW VOR shows frequency is 122.1R. This means you can transmit to Rancho Murieta Radio on 122.1 and listen on the Nav frequency 117.5.

I don't know the family. But we had a kid who somehow did not handle early mornings well when we traveled.. If we got up hours earlier than usual to head out on a trip, he might get a nosebleed or upset stomach. Before heading out on one vacation, my husband decided to mow the lawn. It seemed like the sound of the mower triggered our son's stomach. He didn't have motion sickness, though. He could even read books in a car, plane, or train and was fine. After the early morning upset, his system would be fine. And he didn't have these symptoms at other times or in other situations. Best of all, he outgrew this problem. I suspect Goombah had something similar going on.

I get mission-focused like that also when diverting even on road trips. I have to remember that the point isn't to get there. It's to enjoy the whole trip. I realize I recognize that trait in others better than in myself though :) Glad you've made that discovery about yourself as well.

Great decision and execution. Only thing I'd do differently myself, is if i found myself entirely out of sync as is the case with an unexpected diversion. I'd ask Bakersfield approach if they have any NOTAMs and have them read them to me. I'd also try them first before flight service, since you know you had good two way comms with them already. If anybody ever gives you a hard time, "I'm too busy to check NOTAMs for you", pull out the "I have my hands full and could use your help". If that doesn't work don't be afraid to say you're declaring an emergency, or you can try it the unofficial way saying you have a minor medical emergency - that will get their attention quick.
@chrisbrown05819
@chrisbrown05819 2 года назад
Great decision making. One thing to help with medical emergencies. Look for Airports that have services. FBO’s, emergency services (fire, medical, etc services), good instrument approaches (ILS LPV, etc.) Come up with a couple of diversion airports that meet these qualifications. Then your next step is to look up the weather, which diversion airport has the best weather. Weather is the next most important decision. Once those two questions are answered, you’ll make the correct decision in picking to most suitable diversion airport. Happy flying

I'm glad your daughter started to feel better. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. It's distracting when you have a sick passenger, I'm guessing moreso when it's your daughter or loved one. Personally, I think the diversion to Bakersfield would have been my initial call, only because in a place like that you're going to be assured of services, unlike Taft-Kern. Not saying that they wouldn't have had services, but you wouldn't have known until you got on the ground. As to an X on the runway, the airport I learned to fly out of had four short runways, 1,800' each, and 36 was X'd because at the departure end of was a hill, on the other side of I-95. Of course, back then, we didn't have ANY Internet, no personal computers, no Foreflight, and it wasn't marked on any chart. But, the locals knew, and there was a towered airport 4.8 miles away if you weren't comfortable.

Great decision making! Awesome video. Question about video editting. I see you're using davinci resolve and mutliple go pros. I have a similar setup and was curious about your workflow. I'm just trying to edit a flight with multicam in as little time as possible to get video feedback from my flights. I typically import media, including an ATC audio track and build a multi cam clip by overlaying and syncing via clap. Then I watch and rewatch and cut between shots as necessary. Then I would edit out boring parts and export. I'm just curious what you do. I realize you're telling a story for each video but I'm curious if there is a faster way. Sorry if this is long winded. You're videos are inspiring.

Okay here's the scoop on the X at Taft. Runway 7 has an X on it and is used for takeoffs only, runway 25 is for landings. Runway 25 has a 2.2% grade, strange. No student solo flights permitted. You would think all this would be on the NOTAMS......................AIM 2-3-6e says nothing about it. Funny I didn't learn that during my private pilot training. :-) Been to the Gorge several times, great views of the Columbia river during sunset. It's really nice when it's not sold out.

No you do not. If you are on flight following or on an instrument plan, ATC will ask the reason. It could be as simple as because I want to… but it is wise to keep them in the loop on any cockpit situations which could escalate or change the outcome of the flight.

With all due respect, this Coml Inst pilot who also trained as an F/A....would never let my pax be wrapped up in blankets or sleeping during TO and landing. In an accident they'd need to be able to quickly exit the aircraft and not get tangled up such that it costs them their lives. if you want to be even more safety conscious...NO synthetic clothing (melts to skin in a fire), NO flip-flops or open toe sandals, only sturdy lace up shoes that are on or TO and landing, the pax alert, knowledgeable and ready to exit the aircraft quickly through an available door that is not blocked and clear from fire.

I am concerned that you are not recognizing it - especially since you have your family on board. Yes, you are interested rated, and have the latest equipment and one gains experience by challenging themselves. Not sure if it's just me, but I feel like throughout your videos on this channel you're constantly pressuring your family to fly with you. Whether it be flying into Sedona in crazy winds and making your wife vomit, to flying over the top of wildfire smoke and having your family experience mild hypoxia symptoms, now this. At some point do you just maybe cut them out of the equation in terms of family trips, and just use your aircraft for work and personal hobby purposes? If my partner was constantly getting sick and not enjoying flights, I absolutely would not be having them in the air with me ... not only would I feel bad for them for constantly putting them in that scenario, but also it's the last distraction I need if an emergency was to arise.
@MrStunnd
@MrStunnd 2 года назад
And by pressuring, I don't mean metaphorically holding a gun to their head and saying "get in the plane", but moreso planning trips whereby there are no other suitable options to get to the destination, and everyone having to agree to fly with you as there's no other choice. Ultimately, the sad truth is not everyone is up for flying in small planes, no matter how many times they do it and no matter how perfect the weather is. Throw in some turbulence and hot temperatures in a small plane wit hno a/c, and it's a definite no for many.

regular youtube ad revenue is so low (along with what they pay creators out of premium accounts), which is why creators take on sponsors so I think you should direct this comment to youtube and ask them to pay creators with better ad rev. If we only relied on youtube ad revenue there would be no way any creators (except maybe those getting over 1M views per video) could continue creating content. There's nothing like spending 40-50 man hours on a video and having youtube ad rev pull in $150. If you and everyone else support creators you enjoy on Patreon we could ditch the whole ad/sponsor supported thing. THAT would be awesome!
