ABRP on the Ioniq EV center console

It is possible to connect a better route planner with live updates to the center console in the Ioniq EV 28 kWh. I will show how to set it up and do a test run.
The hardware is:
An iphone.
An android phone.
A ODBLink MX+ (other EVNotify compatible OBD adapters work too)
The apps used in this video are:
A better route planner (iphone): apps.apple.com...
EVNofify (android): play.google.co...

I also have a 2017 Ioniq 28kw. I bought it in January 2021 and have yet to get an app to work with the car. I have looked at the different setups from you, Bjorn, and a couple of other people, but I have an IOS phone and that appears to be the problem. That and the fact that I'm not willing to try a bunch of ODB II devices. I'm also not willing to subscribe to Bluelink. I look at using the app as a toy, I can use the car just fine without it, but with my ICE vehicle it was plug and play. If it were only it was that easy for this used EV.

The app support for the 28 kWh Ioniq depends on region, I think it only works in the US so I have no app at all in mine. The biggest thing I really miss is preheating the car from the house, now I have to walk out to the car to turn it on in the winter. But the car works just fine without it :)

@@tyfonroad I am in the USA but Bluelink works in Europe. I'm just not willing to pay $20 US a month to use it. New Hyundai Cars get it for 3 years included.

Yes it works for the 2020 Ioniq and Kona here, but not the 28 kWh Ioniq sadly. It just says "invalid VIN" when you enter it. $20 a month seems a bit excessive though! I'm not sure I would have done that even if possible.

I have an Android phone, but the apps only work if you use the ORIGINAL connecting lead that came with the phone. It has to be plugged into the usb socket under the AC control panel, not the one under the armrest which is for charging only. Hope this helps. 🙂

Is it correct, that the Apple route planner is used instead of the ABRP-planner, when carPlay is used? I noticed, that ABRP has occasional issues to find the optimal route to the next charging station (when compared to the Apple route planner or google maps) so this would be an advantage.

I'm not sure if it only displays using the apple maps or actually does some routing. But the map quality and direction responsiveness is better than the web based ABRP at least :)

So why can't you use the iPhone with EVNotify again, couldn't figure it out sounded like only works on one car rather than multiples? I only have one car anyway so guessing could use it with right OBDII dongle and all on the iPhone with ABRP & EVNotify if I wanted to.

It is possible but none of the OBD2 adapters I have work with EVNotify on the iPhone. I saw somewhere that there was one that was supposed to work but my OBDLink MX+ which works with other apps does not work with EVNotify (only on Android). EVNotify works for multiple cars but you need one EVNotify account for each car to be able to link to different cars in ABRP :)

As it looks this is not yet a reliable solution by far. But I'm sure the software will improve soon enough. For now, I am using the ABRP just to get a general estimation that I also correlate with the Windy forecast, before starting longer trips. This way I have a realistic overview of the consumption so I will have the necessary buffer at all times. Best estimation comes with driving experience on that particular car.

Yes, this setup is definitely in "beta" still. I forgot to mention that I am using abrp premium so it is supposed to use real-time temperature, wind and weather. But it seems like more calibration is needed. It will also be better when all software can run on one phone.

@@tyfonroad I expect from Hyundai to improve the onboard instruments so they can include at least part of the functions provided by these apps (since the main info comes from the car itself...)

Hi Tyfon. Thanks for the informative video. Have you tried canIoniq with an Android phone? If so, how does it compare with EVNotify?

I got canioniq too, you can see it in the video before this one. It gives much more detailed information but the reason EVNotify is nice is that it can send data to a better route planner :)
