Torque is a tricky thing. It makes you feel quick but actually not. Its good in climbing a hill its powerfull but in hard acceleratiom rpm and hp is more important

Two things. First is the difference in the final ratio and the gearbox. Diesel engines has more torque on the crankshaft, not on the wheels. Second is the difference in the ability of change angular speed. The expansion speed of petrol and air mix during the working phase is much faster than diesel and air mix expansion. But the diesel systems has more torque flexibility. That's why we feel diesel cars accelerating better than petrol ones. Physic and numbers show otherwise.

I have the 525i but 6 speed manual and 2.5L, 215bhp. The smoothness in day to day driving is great, very quiet and relaxing. Then when you hit the open road, drop a couple of gears with the 6 speed shifter and spin that 6-cyl up to 7k it just SINGS! 😍 It may not be electrifyingly fast, but the feeling of enjoyment and wellbeing you get driving this car really is excellent, even at nearly 20 years old it still feels like impressive engineering.

Hiya out there! As an engineer I must complain: Both vessels were in different states of fuel stock and motor temperature. Unless changed to equal conditions the test is not reliable! Whatever, we all love BMW!!!!

love both but petrol engine is more sporty, better sound and as we can see it is faster despite feeling "slower" due to lack of power at low rpms :D

It's a monster I have a 525I e60 The noise of the 6 cylinders is that happiness wouldn't say that it's a pretty old car BMW its old will always look good

All comparisons between petrol and diesel are unfair, petrol car is normally aspirated, diesel car is turbocharged. Should always compare like for like.

You feel diesel faster than petrol because you feel the torque not the power.

I am a petrol fan, but there is no way the 525i is stock. It has upgraded DISA and remap.

525d is heavier and less power and runs very Good. Chip 525d and will be faster.

It is normal the tractor is always slower

But 525d in stg2+downpipe is 300hp and 600nm ;) what gives 525i ?

I am still not convinced. With rolling start from 50 km/h or 80 km/h, I think the 525d will be faster.

There must be downhill, my f30 328i with 245 hp runs 0-200 is 24 seconds. This heavy 218 hp e60 cant run in 25 seconds.

Guys, first think: the comparison be twin this engines is unfair, be cause diesel one is turbo and the petrol one is not. Go and compare same size but both engine turbo and you will see how the petrol one beat the diesel by far away. If you will go to compare two engines one diesel and one petrol same size (cc) you will see guys, the diesel engine it will be smoked by the petrol one.
