In this fun model kit review video, we'll be looking at Accurate Miniature's 1/48 North American P-51C Mustang (kit number 3419). This kit was originally released in 1996. In this video, I'll give a brief history of the P-51C, we'll go through the kit instructions and talk about any potential problem areas to watch out for, we'll look at the fit and surface detail of the exterior parts, we'll look at the detail on the interior parts, talk about the quality of the decals, and I'll go over any aftermarket items used in this build. Considered a "wonder kit" when it was released, is this classic kit still worth building? Let's find out together!

Another great review! I remember when this kit came out and was very popular at shows and contests a while back. Never built it but like other AM kits the instructions make you pause and study each step. Something some manufacturers don’t do. Especially with the painting. Thanks!

Thank you! I agree. The instructions could be better with their pictoral diagrams, and you really need to slow down and read the written instructions and painting directions. But, the rest of the kit is very nice. Cheers!

Thanks for the review Jon! In case anyone is interested, Premium Hobbies recently released the AM kit as P-51B “Ding Hao”. They include both the standard tail and the later tail with fairing in the box, so you can build either version. Plus, I think the clear parts look a little better than my older AM kits.

WHAT ? I’m first !!!!! 0700 hours OHIO time….. Good morning ☀️….. I’ve payed attention to your process… Weathering,Decals and Sealing for the final finish… I’m finishing up a Vintage MONOGRAM 1/48 Zero, hopefully done this weekend…. Working on my Airbrush and finishing techniques The MONOGRAM Zero is a good practice kit just for that… Still want to do a good job on it NO SHOW PIECE…. I have the NICHIMO 1/48 KATE ( your past review ) on deck All my ducks in a row to get started… SO PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE… And still looking for a new AIRBRUSH, haven’t decided yet… How do you choose what you want to build ??????? You knock them out pretty quick…. There is a difference between the P-51B to the P-51C P-51C looks Chunkier, did some research on Pacific Mustangs ( IWO JIMA )… have a MONOGRAM 1/48 P-51D in the stash… As always, GREAT REVIEW and BUILD… Would love to see your display… Great way to start my Saturday Enjoy your rest of the weekend 😊…. Thanks, Chris! Practice on simple kits is the best way to get better at building and finishing. To answer your question, I have many kits in-process at any given time. I never know what will be completed next. Often, it is a color scheme or a plane I haven't built before that gets finished first. Sometimes, I work on multiple builds of the same aircraft (I worked on five Fw190 variants yesterday). This simplifies painting and color research. But I can get burned out after a while. I wish I could focus on one kit and just get it done (sometimes I do), but it isn't my personality. We each have to do what works for us. Cheers!

Just a suggestion for the wing guns. Instead of glueing them in place, set them in place where you want them then glue some sort of stopper/barricade behind them so that when you install them later they will stop, That way you can work on the leading edge without worrying about the guns.

Love Penny! Have had this one partially made for a while now, just need to finish with the paint job, landing gear and decals. Only weakness I've found is that the seat doesn't have the armor plate behind the pilot. Bad omission by Accurate Miniatures but easy enough to scratch build.

Right on! I honestly don't know if the armor was on every P-51 or when it was standardized. Cheers!

Hello Jon, congratulations on the video, the Accurate Miniatures brand is one of the best that I have had to see and build (I have only been able to with the reboxes in Italeri and Academy) the original I have not been able to get a kit, it is ideal for me the way they designed these kits, you almost don't have to think about extras, just the box, the additional thing would be the belts, nothing more, the instructions of the kits in rebox I complement them with the original instructions so I can detail better, and even in the set tbm 3 from Academy there are no steps or details of the assembly of the ball machine gun. As for the P51 C kit, I have assembled the same one at ICM, I must say that when watching the video, it turned out to be a very similar mold, as if it were a mix of Tamiya and Accurates, so in this way there is a lower quality alternative However, the result with patience and dedication left me almost satisfied, only details that I can improve. As for the metal paint, I have reviewed the documentation on the matter ad nauseam, I have chosen to paint almost all my models that have bare metal in Alclad II airframe aluminum, following the recommendation of opaque aluminum in areas of the wings, panels in different tones to create the effect, just as soiling causes the mirror effect to be lost, they end up looking like a worn-out effect when used. Greetings and until the next video.

Hi, Francisco. Accurate Miniatures was so advanced for their time, and their interior detail and the external surface detail raised the game of the entire industry. I'm so glad to see their kits being re-boxed by Academy and Italeri. I have built several of the early Mustang, Sturmovik, and Yak 1 kits and have their Dauntless, TBM, TBF, SB2U, and B-25 kits on the shelf waiting. If you need the AM ball turret instructions for the TBM, just let me know. Cheers!

Jon, what an outstanding build out, it really looks awesome one of my favorites in your series. The cockpit is excellent and metal finish fantastic . As you have said in the past , yellow is super tough, did you use white primer base? I've never seen or built an Accurate kit but would sure like to find one. The C version always looks different to the bubble top D's.Would be great kits to set side by side. A little side note to your historical reference on the doors. The Merlin engine in its early years also had a deadly power problem - gravity in air combat maneuvers would stop delivery of fuel to the carburetor, Me 109' s loved that. It was fixed by a woman engineer named Beatrice Shilling, first with a valve followed by a completely redesigned carburetor. Not quite sure if sure was a beauty like Marlyn Monroe who also posed as a Rosie the Rivetor girl :-) but the Spitfire has an unusual feminine past from name to engineering. Once again hope ya don't mind, this is truly one of my favorite kits you have shared. I need to look and see if I can find one. Plus, I need to give those Eduard seat belts a go. Did ya leave any in stock :-) Cheers till the next one, this was truly inspirational. BOB

Thanks, Bob! Comments are always welcome. The Packard Merlin in the Mustangs had the negative G fix. I plan to have all the Mustang variants on the shelf at some point. Not enough time in a day... Cheers!

As always, excellent review. Is this an old kit? Are you planning on making videos of the various P-51 Mustang versions? It could be a good comparison.

It is IMO the best 1/48 P-51B/C at the moment, edging out Tamiya because you don't have to correct the cockpit floor on the AM. However, Eduard is going to be releasing one in the spring, and it'll be the new standard assuming it''s even close to as good as their P-51D.
