He's introduced and dies in the same game when we easily could've defended him in a case to get to know him so we care when he dies/have legitimate motive to suspect Athena killed him, instead of whatever purpose to the story The Monstrous Turnabout is supposed to serve
Yes, that is why I feel like Clay should of been more relevant instead having a two minute backstory and death because they could had him get established, my main criticism of dual destines is despite it arguably having the most deep story it never actually properly uses it

Spark is hated?! He's one of the most honest witnesses in the whole series, certainly one of the most helpful, and while he acts a bit strange, he doesn't mean harm at all!
The only thing I had against him was that I couldn’t find his damn “tell,” and I had to look up a walkthrough, and I think not noticing his sweat was perhaps the most lost I’ve ever felt in the series, and frustrated, but not so much that I ever thought, “Man, I hate this idiot Brushel guy” or even “Man, I sure wish they relegated Perceive to be an Investigation-exclusive mechanic, with far more liberal punishments”~
When it comes to the sweating one, it's more that given his mannerisms you'd expect the tell to be around his nose given how it twitches a lot but instead it ends up being as mundane as sweating which many players would feel cheated by something like that since it was never set up like say, the Uni guy fidgeting on the tip of the page or in the same case as Spark Brushell, Kristoph Gavin's devil-shaped hand tensions which are set up by Vera Misham, meanwhile Spark Brushell's tell is set up to involve his nose and then it just ends up being a sweaty armpit which is not really good setup, not that I disagree with points made just pointing out a reason why people would dislike his tell.
You make some interesting points about Brushel's relevance. I'm definitely going to consider these when I start writing about Succession for my own review.

It's not his mannerisms, design or personality that brings the hate, it's how bullshit difficult that bracelet segment is where you need to find his armpit sweat. Must have doubled by Apollo Justice play time all by itself.

I counter your argument with "You can respect the role but hate the personality". Brush was quintessential to the forgery case, yes, but while Lotta Hart was a New York Post journalist, Brushie was a Buzzfeed writer.
spark brushel has maybe my favorite character design in all of ace attorney, he's the least annoying witness in the franchise, he's the most respectable person in the franchise...I just think he's neat. if spark brushel has less than two fans I'm dead because you could never make me hate him.
on one hand, I found him annoying, on the other hand, I really hoped to see him again in the next games, like other professionally annoying witnesses like Lotta Hart and Wendy Oldbag. His breakdown is hilarious and he's not even a murderer.
