There are three types of devil fruit. Logia, Zoan and Paramezia. Logia = elements (in the broadest sense) Zoan = animals (also in a special sense, an example is Chopper with the human fruit). Paramezia = miscellaneous (rubber like Ruffy, chomp like Wapool or separation like Buggy)

for devil fruit users based on " element " such as smoke or fire or anything like that, you can touch them if they do not activate " their power ". They can choose to become tangible or not basicly. And when they fight most of the time, they actuvate their devil fruit. It's not like luffy who have not that kind of devil fruit, luffy devil fruit is different kind, his devil fruit made his body rubber all time so he don't feel pain. For devil fruit users who are element such as fire or smoke, if they don't turn themself into the elements they feel pain.
ohhhh okay that makes sense, when luffy jumped into smoker, he didn't activate his power, or he actually did? with his hand? maybe not for his bach though XD
@@NabsiReactsSmoker didn't see Ruffy's "attack" coming and therefore didn't turn his whole body into smoke to defend himself. He only turned his arm for his attack. Logia type, by the way, also have the problem, like all devil fruit users, that their powers don't work when they come in contact with sea water or a material called "sea stone". Both create the "Curse of the Sea" from which all Devil Fruit users suffer. They lose their powers and suffer from extreme exhaustion.
@@NabsiReacts Sea stone is not overpowered because it is relatively rare and because it "only" stops the devil's powers. Sure it makes for extreme exhaustion but if you are strong you can try to get away from it. More dangerous is to fall into the sea, because as a devil fruit user you will inevitably drown.
