@@logos_motorider6274 yes, i get 100 fps + easily on medium-low settings on AAA tiles, temperatures have been great, cpu ranges from 83-88C and gpu 78-82C with turbo on Gpu max is 78-79 never touches 80. Best part is the keyboard. This is definitely best for the price. i'd say not to go for powerful laptops with high cpu temps. i highly highly recommend this after doing a lot of research.
I have watched and read countless reviews about this laptop and only you were able to provide all the important information I needed in a nice simple straightforward video. Thank you!
I am looking at this laptop & hubby suggested I check out the online reviews before I get my hopes up, so to speak. He suggested I check out the review for Linus Tech Tips. I completely agree with my hubby about checking our reviews first, however after checking out the other guy's channel..I can honestly say HANDS DOWN that you have the better channel! You give out much more information about the product & even go above and beyond to demonstrate sounds such as how loud it will be when you type. I love the detail you are giving instead of playing a game with a couple of your friends to speak about the graphics card, which even the Alienware electronics are using. Thank you for giving such a thorough review so I can make an informed decision.
I liked it so much I bought a 2080 maxq version with 32 gb ram and 1tb nvme. I wanted thunderbolt3 for my high speed highpoint nvme storage modules(2 of them) with an additional 4 & 8tb super fast storage. Im getting around 2500-1600 R&W with the external nvme storage. Works great! Thanks for the review!
I know I'm late for the video but would you recommend this to somebody who hasn't got much experience with laptops and wants to use it entirely for gaming?
Hi Jarrod, love the review, I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into it, which is greatly appreciated. I am choosing between 3 models, all with i7 and 2060: the Asus GX502, Msi GS65 and this one. Each has its own weakness: 502 not having Thunderbolt 3, 65’s numerous reports on weak hinges and this one being difficult to upgrade, same as the 65. I am looking for a mix of both gaming and professional engineering work that is relatively future-proof for at least a few years to come. What is your opinion?
Cheers! GX502 will perform the best as it has G-Sync, which boosts gaming performance by around 50%, and the Triton doesn't get G-Sync unless you go for the 2080 model, GS65 doesn't have it at all. I'd probably get the GX502 myself.
I see you have tested 3 machines with 8750h /rtx 2060.. It would be nice to test a machine with 9750h and rtx 2060 to better compare the helios 300 and similar. Great video!
well why not just buy the laptop with future proof ram and storage. Thats what i did. doubt i'll have to upgrade the 16gb ram and i'm more than happy with my 1tb ssd option.
hi Jarrod anyway in one of your post you said you were about to receive alienware m15 r2, did you manage to receive it because am waiting for your review to decide whether to buy it or not. Thank you
Nice review! One downside for this laptop is the inverted motherboard. For someone who likes to tweak and upgrade your laptop this will be a hassle. And one more thing, acer should consider removing the "Predator", i think the logo is enough. Other than that, this laptop is performing well.
Yeah logo only would be better in my opinion! Upside down motherboard does suck, but at least for me, I only need to get into my machine once as I upgrade everything to max then I'm done, so only an annoyance one time. If you need to get in a lot though to change things it wouldn't be great.
@@JarrodsTech Well yes..if someone wants to avoid hassle, they could maxed out all the specs when buying so that theres no need to get inside the machine, but that will cost much! And not everyone have much budget for one time upgrade hehe..It will be more ideal to upgrade little by little, and bcoz of this you will need to get to your motherboard several times which in this laptop will be inconvenience.
This video is great! you covered pretty much everything on the laptop. I just traded in my Razer 13 for the Triton 500 and this to me is a desktop replacement.
Rolando Alvarez how you been liking it? I’m going back and forth over this or the M17 R2. But I hear a lot of people complaining about the thermals and it getting super hot when just web browsing. I never really see anything bad with Acer.
Hey love ur reviews ❤️. I’m going tomorrow to pick one up either this or Helios 300, but thermals are very important to me , can u please tell me which has better cooling? Thanks 😊
I know that this is probably late, but Dave Lee's videos explains thermals on the Triton 500, he also has a review on the Helios 300 that include thermals.
Hi Jarrod, thanks so much for the reviews. Very thorough and data based approach. Congrats on the 100K. Now that my 2.5 year-old Razer Blade 2017 is dead and out of warranty, I need to buy a laptop and have been going through all your reviews. Coming from the Blade I really want to keep the thickness down @ 0.7 inches, which is why I'm looking at the Triton, but also Helios due to its value. I was a bit dismayed at the relative performance of Triton vs Helios, especially even after you undervolted this down 150mV and it still performed similarly overall, still worse thermals by 8-10C and is currently ~$550 more expensive. Maybe the performance could be gained back a little by getting the Triton with i7-9750H, but other than that the only other thing Triton has going for it is 512GB default SSD instead of 256GB, and supposedly larger battery, which only seem to last 30 minutes longer even with 100mV factory undervolt. The power brick for Triton is also heavier than Helios so any weight savings is offset when you look at the whole package carrying in your laptop bag. What would be your recommendation between the two? I'm also looking at Aero 15 with OLED screen but that has even worse thermals than this.
Thanks! The Triton is beaten by the Helios because it has a thinner chassis, as a result the CPU power limits need to be lower so that it doesn't get too hot. While the Aero may run hotter, you'd have to actually look at performance differences, perhaps it just has higher CPU power limits (it does indeed, and you even have the option of lowering them). Depends what it's being used for, for just gaming I'd probably stay away from OLED, however as an all rounder / content creation / workstation machine I'd go the Aero
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for the reply. Great point - I forget Helios is set to 56W CPU PL, while Aero OLED goes up to 62W, that is 6W difference which isn't small. Also, I'm planning on getting 1660Ti model instead of 2070MQ you tested, so there will be 10W difference there. (I have no need for ray tracing). EDIT - looked at your Helios 300 thermals video with stock undervolt removed. Even in that case it didn't do too bad. it looks like there really is no way around better cooling on the Helios 300 because that laptop is thicker. Maybe I just need to give up on this idea of slim laptop with GPU. I'm very concerned about thermals as I think constant 80C+ on GPU and CPU was the eventual downfall to my Razer. CPU/GPU might be okay but I'm not so sure about other components on the motherboard after prolonged exposure.
Subscribed to you, bob and own or disown, man you three do the best ones around, I love your graphs especially, to the detail, I'm hunting for a new portable coding/gaming laptop and print screening your comparison graphs, a rare thing to see around the web. You are awesome, I love to see such passionate work! Triton is on discount in scan UK for 1199 pounds with 2060/i5, much stronger than ga502du and more portable than y540, think I'm gonna bite it after these reviews, maybe wait for black Friday if aero drops...keep it up man!
At the time of purchase (here in Australia), I chose the Triton 500 over the Helios 300 mainly because the Helios 300 was only spec'd with a single 16GB stick of RAM. Having to buy another stick to make it run in dual channel would have put the cost over the Triton 500. I did however expect the Triton to have longer battery life (slightly more power hungry components but much larger battery) so it's surprising that it doesn't. FYI for anyone worried about the power button placement. Accidentally pushing it does nothing (even if you try set it to do something in Windows). You have to hold it for 3-4 seconds for it to do anything (it only responds Acer's app, forgot the name of it).
hey Jarrod! Can you make a video of the top 5 best gaming laptops this year so far different prices respectively? like best over all gaming laptop for 800usd going up all the way to 2000usd?
It's on the to-do list, but honestly won't happen til closer to the end of the year after I've tested more machines out, there are still lots of popular models I'm yet to use, and I have so many to get through at the moment I've basically got months of reviews I need to prioritize.
@@JarrodsTech awesome, hopefully i would have the money to buy one before then. lmao! keep doing what your doing man, your gonna get big, i'm sure of it.
I want to say that I’ve bought like 5 laptops over the last 2 years using your videos XD just picked this one up yesterday and I’m definitely impressed
Jarrod'sTech lol I buy and sell just so I’m able to try out new tech! It’s a waiting game and making sure I can purchase something and leave enough room to at bare Minimum be able to get my money back when I sell so I can find another one !
Hello, great channel !!! I have a question i bought this Laptop, very happy about it. Now i would like to buy a 34 inch Monitor to go with it that support indeed GSYNC. The laptop though doesn't have a DP port. I read that G SYNC it's supported just with a DP port. Would work if i buy an adapter that goes into HDMI ? Thanks in Advance for your help Cheers.
I haven't tested that many, however I like the Aero 17 so far, but raw performance wise the Razer Blade Pro 17 does very well due to the above spec power limits.
I have to choose between: Legion Y540 1660Ti 16Gb RAM i7-9750 for 1400€ Triton 500 RTX 2060 16gb RAM i7-8750 for 1500€ Which one should I get? Any opinions?
Depends on price range, but I've covered what I think are the best options for 2019 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O8zcB_EcAyY.html
So is it worth buying or not over the helios 300,what i find a issue is regarding the space? Im confused which 1 to buy i liked the laptop and the specs but the storage bothers me , please give a answer should i go for it or not!
If you need thunderbolt/slightly smaller machine, possibly, the higher end config also has G-Sync which is a nice bonus, but the Helios is still one of the best options for the money at the moment.
Hello thanks for a great review! Would this laptop be able to use a dock via USB C? Would love to game on this laptop, via external display and keep it charged with one cable.
After had to decide between lenovo y540, triton 500 & helios 300. I have decided to buy acer helios 300 (17.3) with rtx 2060 to replace my old lenovo y580. Totally satisfied with my new beast machine. Plus, the display is great for graphic design. :D
Hello guys, I appreciate your reviews and i checked that helios300 has delta electronics power supply. Do you know the brand of the triton500 one? I am stuck between lenovo y740, helios300, triton500 and dell g7. Which one would you choose against speakers, displays, performans and cooling systemm. Thankss. Your channel is the best for reviews....
Sorry I don't, I admit looking at the brand of power brick is not something I've ever done. Depends what specs you're looking at, probably Y740/Triton 500 if you want Thunderbolt/G-Sync, otherwise Helios 300 is good bang for buck and tuned well out of the box.
The -0.15 UV that u showed on the temperature tests, was the the standard -0.15 UV with BIOS 1.06 or did u further undervolt the CPU? Great video btw I like the details :)
Acer predator helios 300 with rtx 2060 and i7 9th gen How well does it fare with other gaming rigs? Battery life, Performance , etc I am getting it at 1400 dollars.... Or should I go with its i5 variant which is even lesser... If at 1400 dollars if you do have any laptops in mind kindly say so that I can go forward and buy Thanks
Quick question, is this laptop vr ready for the Rift S? I've seen multiple reviews that don't talk about if the displayport is directly linked to the gpu or not. Thanks.
I recommend going to Reddit and asking someone who bought the laptop to send you a screenshot of the physx configuration screen in Nvidia control center. You'll be able to tell if it's wired directly to the GPU from there
Hey Jarrod, I'm actually looking forward to get the Triton 500 RTX 2060 Model.... But there are two questions in my mind that are holding me back.... One, I've heard that the two SSD's in this laptop are running in RAID 0 and just worried about any chance of data loss and that's why I was also taking in consideration the Helios 300 RTX 2060 Model which has an extra 2.5"in harddrive bay but a slightly smaller battery.... And two, will the RTX 2060 Model be future proof ? Because this will be my only computing device for 5 to 10 years and I want it to be the best....😁😁 Please reply #Jarrod ....🙂 NOTE: Ignore this because you have already replied me through email...😊😊👍🏻
Thanks, probably not as I had them with different specs (2060 in the Triton / 2070 Max-Q in the Y740). To do a comparison properly ideally I want the exact same specs to do the best possible apples to apples comparison.
Very thorough review Thanks Jarrod! I bought a Triton 500 on Black Friday after watching your review! I also noticed LOTS OF power throttling when doing benchmark test, and the Intel XTU doesn;t seem to actually raise the power limit even if I tweaked it. What tool did you use to increase the power limit? I am on the newest bios 1.12.
I use xtu but it may have only worked in CPU only load, can't recall the results off the top of my head. It's definitely power limited to prevent it getting too hot
With an i7-9750H and a 2060 card, is this the best laptop with such a setup? Or does its competitors (Helios 300, Y540, Y740, ...) fare better on the same specs? Can you enlighten me, Jarrod?
No, I would expect the other three to beat it. The Helios has higher CPU power limit, that's a bonus, while the Lenovo options let you disable Optimus, which boosts performance by around 15%.
Yeah it's fine for me, it's going to come down to personal preference, with high refresh rate + decent FPS I find it hard to notice unless I think about it and actually look for it.
Hey jarrod, i want to buy the acer predator triton 500 (i7-9750H, GTX 2080) for programming apps and games as well as video editing and mp will use it for the next 6-8 years. So i wanted to know if this laptop has good build quality. I also wanted to know how long does the battery last for.
Hey hey, I'm just curious how you got those high frame numbers on R6:Siege as I will only reach about 110 on Ultra with the exact same specs. Do you think there is something wrong with my laptop? Also I read about the a RTX 2060 "GPU not detected" bug (Games crashing and the GPU cannot be detected by the PC until you reset the internal batterie (CMOS batterie)), do you know anything about that. Really like you videos even though I already have this notebook :)
Are you testing actual game play, or also built in benchmark? If built in benchmark, should be fairly comparable to my results. My guess is you might have single channel memory (1x stick) instead of dual channel (2x sticks), worth checking that. I've never heard of that bug, sorry.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for the fast answer :) "Sadly" I do have dual channel :(. I've compared it with the benchmark and ingame. My benchmark results are like in the 120 fps regions (reaching from 110 to 130 depending on the area) But I do think it's the hardware. If I use turbo mode nothing really changes except I get some nasty frame drops. edit: also my batterie does drain quite often :/ Anyway thank you for taking the time to respond!
Hey Jarrod, I'm looking at the Triton 500 with the RTX 2070 (uk-store.acer.com/predator-triton-500-gaming-desktop-pt515-51-black). Can't find any reviews of that specific model anywhere...it only seems to be the model you've reviewed or the one with the RTX 2080. It's £1999 on the store but with student discount, I can get it at £1700 which to me seems a good deal. Do you think there would be much difference between the version you reviewed, specifically with the 8th series processor v the newer 9th? Also specs on the website are a little misleading and it says it supports 32gb RAM but only comes with 16GB with 2 total slots...I presume it's just single slot memory rather than dual channel. Also, I can't find if this model has g-sync or not...it's driving me mad!
I tested the 2060 model here, I haven't used the 2070 Max-Q one, but I have compared the 2060 and 2070 Max-Q here which may give you an idea of what to expect: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-chMwINWqIUc.html you might also get a little edge with the 2070 Max-Q Triton 500, because I think with that and above it has G-Sync, which will further improve gaming performance for the reasons covered here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RJfHr-Y57LY.html minimal difference between 8th and 9th gen CPUs.
Thanks for great reviews. There is only one thing that bother me every time since... I don't remember... Well, it's very hard to see actual keyboard flexing because of your table, that bends while pushing the laptop. Could you make some stabilization of your table?
Unfortunately HP don't send review units and they cost too much in my country for me to buy just to review, sorry, hopefully it will be possible in future if they decide to get in contact.
Generally no where, Australia just costs a lot 😅 Kong Computers is good to deal with though, otherwise just look for sales - generally if say Gigabyte have a sale though it extends to all the companies selling the laptop.
Hey Jarrod I was looking for the asus scar 3 i9 2070 variant but I’m not finding it in Australia(only finding i7) if you know where you get could you please send a link
I had the same model as yours, i7-9750 and rtx2060. Turbo mode and undervolt by -1.4 Strangely my timespy benchmark is only 6250 average. Can you advise what else you did to increase that to 6600 from your test results?
My time spy test is at stock with the 8th gen CPU, no undervolting, I just stuck it in turbo mode (I think that's the name of the best mode, been a while since I used this!) and ran it at stock with all background apps closed.
Would plugging a secondary 1ms 240hrz monitor into this laptop benefit competitive games or no? I have this exact laptop and am looking into getting a secondary monitor for home gaming rather then buying a pc and monitor.
Jarrod'sTech My is a 3ms 144hrz screen display on my acer predator triton 500. So if I were to buy a secondary 1ms 240 Hz monitor I would be benefitting when it comes to gaming? If yes then what do I use to connect them? The HDMI port or display port? Thanks for the quick reply. Really appreciate the help!
Great content mate! I’m looking at buying a AW M15 R2, are you doing a review of this model soonish? I trust your in depth reviews for me to make a confident buying decision.
Thanks, yes I think so. They told me they should have them available last week, but it didn't happen so still waiting on them, no exact ETA at the moment other than probably soon.
Thanks! I'm not sure, generally I don't get the same model with slightly different specs, and as I've already tested out the 9SF I don't know if they will be looking to also send me a different version, and from my perspective as I've almost always got a line of new models to test it's hard to justify the days worth of testing just to show slightly different results. In an ideal world I'd get every spec config available and have time to test them all out, but it's just not possible for those few reasons.
Another great video!!! Jarrod what is the smallest/lightest gaming laptop power supply that you saw? I think it might be more important than a very good battery
I don't think so, the power limits cut off the clock speed, and I assume those are in place to prevent this thinner machine getting too hot. I can't say for sure without testing it, but I suspect same power limits and therefore same limitations - at least for sustained multicore load, for shorter bursts the 9th gen would see an improvement.
Hi, trying to decide if to get this laptop or the aftershock vapor 15 pro with GeForce GTX and 1tb Evo plus nvme m.2 SSD. Or if you know of any others that are better around budget of 3000 aud Will mainly be using for ZBrush, Photoshop and Maya aswell as a bit of gaming. Will also need to take back and forth to uni so has to be light hence looking at either of these.
I'd probably get the vapor personally, that said in less than a week we'll have info about next gen laptops so probably worth waiting a little longer as newer models are about to launch, even if you don't get one there may be sales on current gen.
if i had to choice between this laptop 1750$ and y540 1530$ with the same specs ( i7 9th and RTX 2060 )for a heavy cpu and gpu work ( rendering ) witch one should i pick ? and add y740 2040$ with the same specs too but this one as you see will cost more . so what do you think is the best deal ?
Hey I've a quick question. which one should I choose? MSI GS65 RTX2060 32GB Memory 512GB Storage 240HZ Refresh Rate Display (or) Acer Predator Triton 500 RTX2060 16GB Memory 512GB Storage 144HZ Refresh Rate Display. I'm not a big gamer, I might not game at all. I'm looking to buy any one of these laptops for Video Editing on Davinci Resolve. Can you please help me.
I haven't used the new GS65 so can't really compare it just yet, I wasn't personally a fan of the wider touchpad on the GS65 though. Otherwise probably much the same performance wise, thin machine, upside down motherboards, etc. Spec wise I guess with the same CPU/GPU probably similar performance in those workloads but you may see benefit with the additional memory of the GS65, you could of course always upgrade that yourself in the Triton later, keeping in mind dealing with the flipped board.
If I am able to get both with the same specs I will, however at the moment the ones I have tested have different CPU/GPU so I cannot do a direct comparison. I briefly compare the two towards the end of this video though.
in the future would you be able to make a list of all laptops sorted by db fan noise? the best laptop for me is a device that has a mix of good performance with quietness
Probably, however I have not had the chance to test the 2070 Max-Q version so cannot tell you exactly what it'd be. In terms of performance though, I have compared the 2060 and 2070 Max-Q here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-chMwINWqIUc.html
@@JarrodsTech thanx for the answer. I can get either for almost same prize. Seems like a 2070 maxq gives better performance by a some percents. Does the 2070 it have gsync, and do i need gsync? 🤔 Read somewhere that gsync also impact batterylife... Awsome reviews U do btw!:)

How loud is it under load compare to the Helios 300? I pulled the trigger on the 300 during the $999 deal at amazon on prime day thinking I got a good deal. Then this laptop went up for the exact same price later in the day! I immediately felt regret. Though I am curious if it suffers in fan noise at least, on account of the slimmer size.
@@JarrodsTech It looks like the Triton 500 in addition to being slimmer than the 300, is also quieter! 2dBa less at idle which is basically meaningless, but nearly a full 4dBa less under load running watch dogs 2. Considering how much slimmer the 500 is compared to the 300, one wonders what the benefit was of going thicker. Especially when the throttling has nothing to do with temps.
Thanks, I only just started testing it so I can't say too much about it yet as I still don't have all the information, there will be some videos coming soon though.
i bought fx505du because of your review. just a question, what software do you use to measure the fps of the games and to see the gpu cpu performance etc? thank you very much!
@@tanmoybiswas7710 i did thank you very much!! Just one question tho, would the afterburner show the fps even tho its beyond the range of my monitor or is it limited at my screen's refresh rate?
@@JarrodsTech how about for the msi afterburner. Would the software show the actual fps even though it is above the refresh rate of the monitor? Im just curious if my gpu can only do up to 120fps or its the msi afterburner limiting the fps shown on the fps data
hi Jarod, i bought the Triton 500 from acer refurbished. I had a question about its idle temps with the AC power plugged in. I am getting pretty significant fan nose from the CPU and GPU fans at idle and based off of your review, it seems like you were not experiencing this during your time with it. Do you still have information on what the range the GPU and CPU fans RPMs were at idle? I need to make a decision on returning or exchanging this laptop soon and I need to get an idea of this is just normal behavior for the laptop. Thanks
I don't think I noted the RPM reported, just recorded the volume. If you're in a warmer environment though that could happen, also depends what's going on at idle, eg background processes etc.
@@JarrodsTech its about 13C here. I noticed that when I take it off ac power, the temps drop by 5-9C and fan noise also decreases. On ac power the fans are always going no matter what power profile I'm on.
@@JarrodsTech i'm suspecting that it may be defective or perhaps improperly pasted. I'm also hearing a rattling noise as if there was a mechanical HD inside..I will be contacting acer tomorrow to see what they can do. thanks for your input and great reviews!
hey there i like ur videos and i was wondering if u can help me with my issue : i recently bought an asus tuf fx505 i5 8300h and the cpu reachs 95 degrees 5 minutes after gaming ( cs go ) in a room temperature of approximately 30 degrees is it abnormal ?
Is it thermal throttling? If so you're losing performance and you should try improve it. Either way that is a bit hot, look at undervolting the CPU, here's a guide: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yNt9L3BWOFo.html If that doesn't help, try raise the back of the machine up so more air can get in, or use a cooling pad. Then finally, you could look into changing the thermal paste.
@@JarrodsTech thanks a lot for your suggestions i did some undervoltibg hekped me decrease just 5 degrees ... so ill try w a cooling pad . youre litterally the best laptop reviewer tbh
