How to bring the pH and TA up after an Acid Start Up - Part two of two: • How to bring the pH an...
In this video I show you how to do an Acid Start Up on a newly plastered pool. This pool is a dark blue quartz colored plaster. I am using the Acid Start Up by United Chemical. This method is becoming more common and I use whatever method the plasterer wants.
The Acid Start Up is not without critics and some still feel the traditional start up is better. Here is a link that opposes the Acid Start Up procedure:
www.poolinspections.com/manual...
There are a number of things this article points out and it is valid to note that the Acid Start Up needs to be done correctly. You do not want the pH dropping below 4.8 which will cause damage. How likely is that to happen? Not very. In this to pool to drop the pH to 4.7 it would take 10 gallons of acid - double of what I put in (TA of 150 to start).
I suggest going to: thepoolcalculator.com/ and plugging in your numbers before you begin.
I put in 13,500 gallons -
pH 8.4- 5.4 - as my goal
TA 150
Calcium Harness & Temperature didn't matter in this equation.
So by adding 5.5 gallons of acid I zeroed out the TA and still was way above the danger level of a pH 4.8.
So the steps here are laid out for you in this video and it relatively simple to do correctly.

Don't keep the equipment off that first week. Run it 24/7. As the plaster dust is forming, it's good for it to be brushed off and the water to be filtered. Have a bypass on the heater. Check pH twice a week. I've been in the plaster business for 22 years. There are many more things to consider during the start-up. This is just the must basic to achieve the best results.

I really appreciate your videos. I wish more of my customers would listen when I tell them not to run the pool for the start up and the importance of brushing! All of your videos are very well done and great information. I try to pass along your videos often. Thanks again.

Great video! When you are starting up a pool, when you add a sequestering agent, make sure you also add a CuLator Ultra 4.0 into the pump or skimmer basket. That way any metals that are sequestered will be eliminated by the CuLator. I recommend using the Ultra on every pool start up just as an "insurance" against metal pool stains.

+Manuel espinoza You don't want to run the equipment until the pH is above 6.8 or you risk damaging the equipment or plaster in an acid start-up. This will cause the metal in the heater to bleed into the pool. Usually after day 2 all the dust is gone so you can start raising the pH. In a traditional Start-up or Bicarb start up you can turn the pool on right away. Ignore the comment from RU-vidr as he doesn't know what he is talking about. In an acid start up you don't need to run the pool while the plaster cures for 48 hours. After you bring the pH up run it is much as possible.

My start up involves bringing calcium to 200 ppm plus on first day. Keeping PH7.4-7.6 TA 80-100. Brush vac everyday for the first 5-7 days. Brush nylon and skim, run pump all day. What’s your thought on that ? And of course adding some sort of preventative, biodex, startuptec or magic jac

I just finished getting my pool redone with a stonescape mini pebble finish. I just finished filling the pool last night, which is about 15,000 gallons. They told me to add 2 gallons of acid for the startup. I'm in So Cal. You recommend a lot more acid, so I added 3 gallons. Do I need to add more? Just added the acid this morning. Should I also add the sequestering agent today?

With acid startup, is it preferred to bypass the heater? For startup methods that recommend bypassing the heater, what is the preferred method for the bypass? For example, temporary re-plumbing, re-plumbing with bypass values etc? Thanks a bunch

Just leave the pool off until you are ready to raise the pH and Alkalinity up. No need to run the pool during the Acid Start Up process.

Try adding 1 bottle of a product called Beautec to the pool and brush it a little more aggressively. I suggest this brush: SweepEase 654367706282-SS/Combo-18 Stingray SS/PolyPool Brush. After 2 weeks of brushing the surface everyday you should see some improvement. It is too late to go back and do the acid start up now.

You can speed it up using a stick of 2inch pvc like a straw over the white haze. Hold it about a foot over the area in the water and pour a little acid down the pvc pipe. About 12oz per spot. You can slowly move the pvc in a circle while raising/pulling the pipe out of the water about a foot or two. The acid then falls/drops out off the pvc over the plaster white hazy cement and lands right on it in a uniform mushroom cloud. Acid has a specific gravity of 15, its heavier than water. You can see the acid fan across the floor. let it sit there and you can watch the white burn off in seconds. then brush the acid gently away so you don't over expose one area. while the pool is off!!! Or you can add more acid and run the pool if you do not have a heater. thats less risky because it will burn off more even... I can do 5 or six pools a week, color or not, safely buy running the pool after day one. Google a Hot Start Up. There are classes on these start ups by the plaster venders. I've never been to one who had anything bad to say about starting the pool during this process unless it has a heater, or there are jets on the steps, benches etc where that direct flow from them would over expose around the jets and leave a darker color around them. Remember the pool tells you how much acid to use and how long to leave the acid sitting directly on the surface. After about a min or two the acid is used up in a way. Its still eating layers off but doing so in a much slower manner.
@armystrongbone
@armystrongbone 3 года назад
What i mean is the acid is used up and no longer burning the cement or stain off. (The ACID!) After that only the low water PH is cooking the plaster at a much slower rate. drip a few drops on a spot of cement, or lime/sand stone. I will turn yellow and bubble for about two minutes then not longer eats the rock. And remember, stain removers, everything you add to the water has a PH. A high or a low. The two in this video are high in PH. Thats why he added those first. then the acid.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tether a floating chlorinator so it will stay in the middle of the pool and won't be able to float near any of the walls or steps? I just had my pool redone and we will like to keep our blue plaster looking good.

@@SPL What does it mean “destroys”? Concrete plaster dust doesn’t evaporate out of the pool into thin air obviously. Plaster dust either fallls down to the bottom or is filtered away and then filter is washed to get rid of it. Plaster dust doesn’t disappear to nowhere.

Iv never seen a pool that can't be usded pritty fast...and most have very clear water if the plasters did a good job...so I'm a bit consernded about the quality of this job...what's with the lack of pebbles or glass beads they give the pool 4 times more life than plaster...so it ends up costing the same if not saving money long term...if your going to do a pool do it as best as possible.
