In this video I filmed myself doing an Acoustic Guitar String Shootout between D'Addario EXP Coated (Phos. Bron) v Bronze 80/20 v Phosphor Bronze. I found it really interesting. High resolution (96k, 24 bit) version on the web site.

To be completely honest, the difference I'm hearing is so subtle, there's no way I'd be able to tell them apart in the context of a track.

To my ears set A sounds the best in high and bass and C in the mid to high range. B didn't do much for me for most parts although B was best while strumming a bit heavier. Personally I prefer set A, set C as a close second. Great test, thanks & keep the great videos coming!

It's not just about how they sound. It's also how they feel when you play. Some strings are stiff, while some are soft, and not everyone is going to like the way coated strings feel. Thanx for the video...it was interesting.

Thank you for making an actually useful video. I have been trying to find the difference in tonality between strings -- about to pick up guitar again for the first time since I was a little kid. Anyway, I'm a very technical person (an engineer), and all these colorful words can be a little blase to what things really sound like. Very nicely done, I got to hear the different strings without preface, and decide on my own.

80/20s are always my favorite. I always come back to them. As soon as you find a brand that agrees with your skin and lasts you're set. As long as you have enough natural bass on your guitar, 80/20 is tbe way to go.
@christophergallagher531

It has been my choice for flat tops for 50 years. For arch tops and slide 90:10. 90:10s dried up by the late 70s. When 80:10s settle in, they lose that nice bite and percussive response. But then they last, sounding more like fresh 90:10s did. As it happens my wife got so exasperated with me not having a resionator she gifted me a Gretsch Boxcar. Wow, lucky me. This is a great learning curve. 80:20s are on there now. And as brash as me little brain projected they would be, they are not. The fire around the edges of un dampened strings (damp behind the slide), that I expected is simply not there. Here begins another chase. Chris

Thank you Justin, After playing some different guitars lately I was shocked at how much better some of them sounded compared to mine. So as a result I have been swapping and changing looking for strings that sound right to me. I loved the sound of set B the 80/20's so they will be the next set I buy for sure. D'Addario owe you some endorsement money I think.

I guessed right!!! Watching in 2019 lol. Still a great vid. Used headphones. However to my ear, I agree with almost everything incl. your choices, except my favorite sound was the non coat Phos, followed by the coated, and the 80-20 was the one that sounded a bit dull to me. Less snap or sparkle. But we are talking very subtle differences, still all sounded great!! I'm looking for a less expensive alternative to Elixir strings, which led me here.. I'm just super happy I decided to grab my headphones and that I guessed them ALL correctly !! (Tbh I KNEW the 80-20s but was only like 75% sure between the coated and non PBs, but my gut was right!) Nothin wrong with being a geek. Thanks for your vids Justin!!

One of the more effective comparisons I've heard. In this one I could actually hear the difference. I don't think I've ever tried 80/20 (B) but for me that's the one with the most "life" in it. The others by comparison, for lack of a better analysis, seemed to have some "congestion" - restricted the open sound the 80/20 otherwise offered. Well done.

Thank you Mr. Justin for your video I enjoy the tone of the 80/20 for string G,A,Low E and the tone of the Phosphor Bronze for strings B,D, High E that's if you tune E,A,D,G,B,E hum mix & match different strings to get a certain sound.

Depends on the guitar as well. Phosphor Bronze work very well on my D18 which needs a mid boost. The PB's also take a little of that Martin muddiness out of the bottom. The 80-20's are perfect for my J45. It needs to have the mids toned down a hair and the 80-20's emphasize that Gibson thump on the bottom. 80-20's also mellow out quicker and really compliment to that guitar. I use the Gibson Masterbuilts as my go to 80-20's I am not a fan of any coated strings so those are out for me. This is one of the better comparison vids I have ever heard...great job!

For people claiming they don't hear any difference, try clicking on the red bar to different spots. You'll hear A B and C in quick succession. As Justin said, decent speakers will help, his Hi Res demo is a good idea. I found his descriptions spot on. It could be some acoustic players don't really care too much, just want to play music and have fun.

I agree. They are all good but for diffrent purposes. I also agree that phosphor-bronze is probably a good overall choice, especially for fingerpicking. But then this is an older video. D’addario’s newer XT and XS series have a much thinner coating (like the Elixir nanoweb strings) and sound more like B and C, but with the advantage of A (they last longer). They are a good deal more expensive, of course.

So pumped, picked up 80/20s earlier today because i wasnt liking the phosphor bronze I picked up last week(interestingly i was liking how finger picking was sounding this week, but ive hated how how my chords have been sounding) Wasnt sure if it was just all in my head. Just watched this vid and was hoping throughout that set b would be 80/20s, loved set b, not a fan of a(flat just like you said) and set c polarized me depending on what you were playing. My housemates thought it was just in my head :D Thanks for making this vid :)

Good blind test 👍 although I didn’t have a clue as to which type of string was which I definitely could hear a difference. A was the least favourite but I liked B and C jointly which means I’ll buy both types and see which suits my guitar best. I liked the bottom end that B had but I liked the fuller sound of C. I think with the coated strings it must impact how the string vibrates and the difference is large enough to be noticed. But the bottom line is the difference is so subtle that it’s only going to be noticeable when you’re playing or recording just the guitar, in the mix with other instruments the difference would be unnoticeable. So string choices just boil down to practical reasons and gauge of preference.😎

I've been looking for descent guitar strings for the past year. Something to make my Ovation (my worst sounding guitar) sound better for singing with. I just found your video & agree with every word. I started playing guitar over 60 years ago. 1st one was a Kalamazoo Arch Top. Latest buy was the all solid wood Epiphone DR400MCE. And who knows how many guitars in between? Perhaps my ear sensitivity is gone. But I liked 8020's. But all 3 are great. I've heard that light gauge strings produce less stress on guitar necks? 60 lbs stress per string X 6 strings 360 lbs of stress per set. in toto.

Yours is one of the best string comparison videos I've seen, so far. Personally, I've found the 80/20s have a very short life-span-- about a week, once they break in, compared to about three weeks for the PB's. Although I like the sound of 80/20s, I don't have the patience to change strings that often. I'll be curious to see what your experience is with them. Perhaps you could do an update in this regard, , seeing as you did address life-span, but only in terms of design. It would interesting to know how they actually end up performing for you.

Cool validation, I know this is an older video, wish I found it earlier. However through my learning travels I found: I like the full and warm sound of PB strings in general although I do more often use Aluminum Bronze on my Martin D16. I'll change up tone every now and then. Then I bought a Taylor 314ce V bracing over a year ago. I felt like the sound was somewhat muffled in the low and mid range, with stock coated strings. Naturally the highs are bright on the Taylor with the steel B and E strings (uncoated). I thought it was "new guitar" tightness, then just the Taylor lack of bass, until I just could not wait. Switched to an uncoated set of PBs matching the gauge as closely as possible (John Pearse). Definitely could hear and feel the difference. Coated strings not for me as a tonehound. Lastly I have tried 80/20 on a few guitars which are generally too bright and a bit tinny to my ear. I can see how some people love that very bright tone. In the end, great validation of what I have learned. Also that strings and tones are a preference, and we will all differ on what we want and need on our guitars!

Really well done on this comparison video. Not surprised I like the 80/20s best overall - my preferred strings. The Phosphor Bronze were pleasant enough and will do in a pinch. I found the EXP Coated strings to be flat as well. Rattle and clank sort of effect. I've never got on with any of the coated sets I've tried. I wipe down my strings after playing anyway, so corrosion hasn't been a problem. Cheers!

I like EJ 17’s on a Dreadnoughts guitar, 13-56, Elixer probably makes a better coated string, but I like The D’Addario standard PB strings better than the other brands.

Years ago my guitars where strung with 13s. I broke a lot of strings. Especially the middle strings on a Martin D35. Over time 11s do every thing for me and it feels like there will be less neck resets in the future. I have gone to Martin's SP coated strings on the 12 strings. Man do they last! I do not know what the coatings are, but they stay put. I have had Elixers shred and peal. That was when they came out , what 25 years ago? Good luck out there! Chris
@christophergallagher531
@christophergallagher531 2 года назад
Oh it slipped my mind. As I went lighter I started breaking less and less strings. Not just on the D35, which has scooped mids. 11s feel like the lower limit. There is just not enough going on to pull the top, any lighter. Some guitars get brittle on the plain strings below 12.

I could have sworn the B were the coated strings. I clicked on this video as I've just got some prosper bronze d'addario strings for when these ones either die or break, the current strings came with the guitar and I have no clue what they are. My Dad has been a guitarist a very long time and recommended the phosphor bronze for my acoustic, as I like to not only strum but do some fiddly bits too, and it ties in with what you said, these strings are good for being able to do a bit of both. I don't like wasting strings, and I won't remove the current ones until needed, but I am looking forward to putting the phosphor bronze on when the time comes, great video thank you my friend.
@ohioguy215
@ohioguy215 6 лет назад
Jojo...I too thought B was the coated. I agree with your Dad...I prefer D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze on my acoustic and play both chords and lead in a song. I don't like wasting strings either but after 4 or 5 months, body oil, dirt, corrosion dulls the brightness of the strings. I keep the old for backup and totally clean the fret board and restring....and don't go straight to standard tuning on new strings. It's like taking a brand new car out the gate and onto the highway doing 100mph...not good. Tune em slightly lower, let em adjust to room temp and humidity, stretch a bit and take em up gradually. Definitely prolongs the life of the strings. Take care.

I liked B best for the depth of the bass, but to my ears both A and C were slightly brighter. The problem with a term like 'balanced' is that B seems more so, but maybe only to me. There are people who have ears that can't get enough bright - and while I may not be like that, I see nothing to judge such a preference qualitatively. Thanks so much Justin for a really good comparison.

I couldn't guess which was which in the blind test. However, I preferred C the entire time which was the Phosphor bronze which is what I typically use on all my acoustics. So in a way you vindicated my choice as even in a blind test my ears preferred the Phosphor. That being said I though they all sounded good but I do agree that the coated were the most flat sounding. The bronze alone surprised me as I nearly picked them as my favorite in the blind demo but it was that slightly brittle sound that I wasn't liking as much as the Phosphor bronze. I just thought the phosphor's were the most balanced. Great video! It's exactly what I was looking for.

I had to listen to the last set of playing to be sure but I did get it right. I believe the strings react to the wood of each guitar as well...but that is another test isn't it. As for strings, my current favourite is the D'Addario Nickel Bronze on my dreadnaught. It is an Adi/Cocobolo Collings and those NB's put a big grin on my face...

Thanks again, Justin, for a great test/review. To my ear (through a decent sound system) my fav overall is "B", the 80/20 Bronze. Just the right amount of balance between warmth and brightness for fingerstyle or strumming. I did not like C at all. Too bright/brittle for my taste. Actually "A" (the EXP coated PB's sounded a touch brighter than "B" to me, even though they're coated. On my Taylor acoustics I go back and forth between the coated EXP PB and Elixir Nanowebs. Elixirs have much less string noise than the EXPs. All very subjective, of course, depending on the listener, guitar type and playing style :)

I currently have the EJ14 D'Addario 80/20s on my HD-28 Martin. They are an excellent string but they do tend to dull out pretty quick. They are also very inexpensive. Not mentioned in the video is the fact that they are a "hybrid" set. "Light Top," "Medium Bottom." This is what makes them a very good string set over all.

Very cool shootout. It’s been a long time but I’d like to see if the hi res files are still on the site. I was surprised that set c wasn’t the coated and without giving it a lot of thought yet, I think it might be partly the order that they were played in. Having the coated come after the 80/20s might have thrown me off but set c sounded brighter than set a. The daddario coated pho’s bronze and in that gauge is my string of choice. So a perfect video. I guess it’s also a valid point to use coated for stored guitars, but my understanding is that it’s the oils in your fingers when playing that has the most corrosive effect. If you clean strings before store guitar, I don’t know how much corrosion there will even be sitting safely in the case.
