So glad you mentioned Pemberton’s score. He must have burned at least five studios down making that music and people aren’t talking about it nearly enough.
@@nathanball99With other superhero movies, even the most recent, even if it IS done well, the soundtrack doesn’t feel as distinguishable as it needs to be, with each superhero fight/dramatic music feeling like they could be placed with other dramatic music. Daniel Pemberton’s music in Miles’s own words, does its own thing. You could still hear the deep horns, but they synch so well with the events in the story that it can fit with the Spider-Verse movies and them ALONE.
When Miles says "There's no spider-man here." Man the feeling of dread is palpable in that very moment. It felt like Miles was really in the darkest world he shouldn't go into, ever.
When he told his mum he was Spider-Man I was like "somethings off here" and then the penny dropped that he was in universe 42 I was like "OH SHIT" my heart was pumping throught the whole ending it was fkn great
That's the thing I think is so impressive. Both of these movies juggle a lot of main characters, arcs, locations, major and minor villains. It already feels like we've spent about as much time with Miles and Gwen as any of the live action Spider-Men.
And it felt stupid as in many other incarnation and variation of that public thinks spiderman is bad. So nobody see the giant crock monster, but hero of the city that leaves criminals hanging from webs is immediately and unquestionably the baddy that killed a kid that died at the scene and crock disappeared.
Gwen’s universe was so visually appealing to watch. The water colouring was amazing to look at. I love when her and her dad hugged, there were warm colours that spread across the screen.
What's really crazy is this is like the Perfect comic version of all of these spider-people. I know they are not but its like see marvel is this so hard to write and put on paper lol
Miguel’s synth theme keeps reminding me of that lonely whale singing a song in a different frequency travelling the globe for its family but they can’t hear it
This movie made me realize that Spider-Man has become a Shakespearian-type character. He’s so well known that new authors can use references from his previous stories to add depth to characters, and even change those tropes to tell new stories with new meaning and commentary. It happens all the time with Shakespeare’s characters, it’s metatextuality-really amazing to see that in a Spider-Man movie.
@@pugman9672 Always have been. Silver Age Superman and Sun Wukong of Chinese mythology have a lot of similarities. Including the massive leaps that later got reimagined as flight.
That and the fact that no matter what iteration or version of the character's story, it always contains huge amounts of tragedy. Shakespeare would be proud
The whole Spider-Verse trilogy is basically this in a nutshell, it's meta commentary on why Spider-Man is an icon but both movies have approached it in different ways
The 'what's up danger' scene is unique because it was conceived by the Spanish artist Alberto Mielgo as a proof of concept for Sony. He wrote, designed and animated that piece before there was even a script for Into the Spider-Verse. So it existed completely outside of that movie. Probably one of the best moving-storyboards I've ever seen.
I loved punk Spider-Man he was the secret gem of the movie. The way he told him to absorb with his hands and the way he knew from the jump that this was wrong was amazing.
And I didnt even notice he was casually stealing parts at the hq while talking to miles to build travel watches for him and gwen until the second watchthrough !! Such a good detail that doesnt distract or make it obvious while building up to the eventual reveal
i do think this movie has a catharsis, but it’s not through the story of Miles and instead through Gwen. In that regard, it feels like a very complete movie from the perspective of Gwen, with the climax being that big conversation at the end. Miles story is the one that is open and just beginning here.
Huh, thats actually a good point. I felt from the start, that this was was more Gwens story and miles was pushed back a bit more in favor of developing our deuteragonist more, but looking at it from Gwens POV, it is actually a very complete story.
I think even miles had a complete arc in the film, leading up to revealing himself to his mom (even if it's the wrong mom lol) he's just not done developing afterwards
Its kinda a weird complaint to me when people says the movie feels incomplete and they don't know how to rank it yet when there's films like, ya know, Empire Strikes Back, which dosent resolve any of its conflicts either but is considered the best Star Wars film.i know Jedi is out now but cosmonaut Marcus in particular dosent even like that film so--- idk its weird xD
I love how this movie looked and I'm honestly sad that the animators seem to have been having a rough time with the production. As much as I want part 2, I would gladly wait another 5 years just for them to have any kind of breathing room.
The only bad thing about this movie is that it ended right at the peak of moment. I was totally absorbed and then it felt like the ending literally said "see ya chump" in your face. I can't wait for the final part of this awesome trilogy.
I'd argue that not having a climactic fight is the movie's biggest problem, like it ends without ever getting to the third act. But to each their own, it's still a good movie with fantastic animation.
@@aminyapussi4740 oh I know there'll be a third act, but moving it to another film that's a year away makes the current film unsatisfying IMO. There have been sequels with cliffhangers/loose ends before (Infinity War, Empire Strikes Back, TDK, Two Towers, etc.) but they still had climactic third acts and felt fulfilling on their own.
Disagree. The climax was the giant chase scene which was epic. You don’t need to punch people for there to be a “battle.” It’s like complaining that Se7en ended without a climax when the emotional reveal/twist was the climax, just as the twist in this movie was the final pump of adrenaline for the climax. So imagine Se7en but instead of them having the killer in custody, it ends with the box and the promise of “we’re going to get him” which is a new story to continue on the tapestry of that epic. I thought it was perfect 10/10.
@@DunkeysLongLostSon Same with Infinity War. There's actually an ending, even though it's obviously a Part 1. The Infinity War equivalent of what Across did would've been going "to be continued" right before the Wakanda battle.
I loved that it JUST. KEPT. GOING. that cliffhanger was amazing. I loved it taking its time to get to the main plot. It was like starting up the engine, letting it warm up, turning on the radio and blasting off.
I had to take the worst piss and every time the music ramped up I felt a rush of relief, then it kept going and I got excited that there's still more movie left. What a rollercoaster.
And then going to a race, but right before the big event starts you turn your car off, get out, leave your car at the starting line and yell to everyone as you walk away "let's do this tomorrow instead". There is no conclusion to this film. You could technically say that Gwen gets an ending in a way, but our main character does not. A lot of people compare this to empire, but I don't think that works bc in empire we get the whole "Luke I am your father" reveal and confrontation before the ending of the film. We don't get anything similar here, essentially it's the equivalent of Darth Vader and Luke walking up to the room they're about to meet in at the end and the screen just cuts to black as a tbc message pops up. Kind of annoying. Everything else is perfect about this film though I'm gonna be honest.
How was the cliffhanger "amazing"? It ended abruptly and right before what was mostly going to be a decisive battle. It was absolutely the worst part of the movie
Also it feels like the team wanted this movie to he even longer but had to cut down and make it shorter I’m surprised that this movie is 2hours long because it didn’t felt like it it was fun that I forgot the movie was 2 hours
I started crying when I saw Donald glover. Not only is it a nod to his cameo in Homecoming but the Donald glover as Spider-Man thing from many years ago. I’m old enough to remember everyone yelling SPIDER-MAN CANT BE BLACK and now look at this. Absolutely heartwarming. And ANYONE can be Spider-Man.
@@luherrera8118 the creator of miles morales took donald glover as inspiration to make miles. it's actually so sweet to see him get recognized by the movies for his hand in everything
One of the things that surprised me most in this move was Spider-Punk. I’ll avoid spoilers for anyone that hasn’t seen it yet, but instead of going down the route it seemed they were going to go with him, they went a completely different direction and I loved it. Definitely one of the best characters in the film.
My thoughts exactly. He’s honestly one of my favorite characters in the movie simply because of how they subverted my expectations. He contributes to the plot in a way that I didn’t see coming, and it was fantastic.
So glad Daniel Pemberton's score is being touched on because I felt that due to how impressive the visuals, themes, story, etc. was in the first spider-verse, his score went a little under the radar but he topped himself with this incredible score. Also cool to see Joaquim Dos Santos go from directing some of my favorite Avatar The Last Airbender episodes in my childhood to helming a large scale superhero animated movie pushing the limits of animation
yes the ost here is great. I have Hummingbird on repeat. also had no clue that we had a bit of avatar the last airbender staff on this movie. anything they touch is gold
@@moonsets-on_you I feel like the score also went a bit under the radar because of the star-studded soundtrack album by Metro Boomin (which is great in its own right). Same thing happened with Ludwig Goranssons absolutely incredible Black Panther scores.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller have always been able to put out top tier level work, seriously talented guys. Love to see them be the ones to do Secret Wars.
one of the main reasons im looking forward to seeing the Flash. They penned the first script for it. It's been through a bajillion rewrites, but even a slice of their talent is gonna make that movie worthwhile
Yep, and for what we’ve seen of what they’re doing with Spot animation wise and even more different Spidey in the same team by grouping both movies friendships he made I honestly doubt is gonna be just ok.
It honestly does take a lot for a sequel to be better or just good than the first, this one surpassed it in animation, score, story, and the freaking twist at the end. Go watch this movie it’s so amazing and I’m so thankful for the team behind both movies
Are these bots comments? This sequel is absolutely not close to the original. This is frozen2 to frozen, kungfu panda2 to the original, and so many others. I am glad its sucessful cuz the original deserved more... but I will not support this delusion that it is a better movie. The soul of the first one was miles and peter parker dynamic of grumpy teacher and a student. Gwen too was more fun when her and miles were just getting to know each other. Added to those fun parts, is the relationship and death of the uncle.. it all was done and fit so well and knew how to both fun and heavy moments. What do we get at that level in this one? Gwens backstory that we seen few times before, miles getting like 3 long scenes to confirm what we already knew, he is a teenager and has loving parents. And then its convoluted plot that gets explained in the last 30 min of the movie. No, the indian, pregnant, punk, vampire spiderpeople... none of them had dynamics and fun of the original core characters in the first one... I think the sequel will do better because dynamics between prowler and spiderman and the uncle has really great potential. But this movie is at best 7/10.. except animation, that is truly 11/10, but unfortunately that was counted to the main score.
I personally love the first third of the movie,it’s just so heartfelt and sets up so much emptional baggage for both Gwen and Miles and getting to catch up on how they were doing after the events of the first movie was so entretaining to me,definitely my favorite part of the movie
It felt like act 2 of a 3 act story. My guess is when the third movie comes out we’re gonna look back at Spider-Verse as a single story told in the strongest trilogy of all time.
I personally really liked the slow pace of the first act. Because the moments were great for me. It made me love Gwen. And it delves more into Miles’ relationship with his parents. Particularly his mom, and that was particularly therapeutic for me. It also gives Miles the motivation to go against Miguel (amongst others). When his mom tells him to never let anyone else tell him he doesn’t belong. It sets up Miles vehemently going against Miguel telling him he’s a mistake, and standing against the Spider Society. It made me really ship Miles and Gwen, as friends and as future romantic partners. The scene with them hanging upside down together was beautiful. The scene where Gwen is investigating the Spot’s earlier crime scene and she’s reporting to Jessica. Meanwhile Miles snuck up on her and is invisible while looking her in the eyes as she’s explaining her lies out loud, was brilliant and emotional.
Agreed. Don't like how they kinda forcibly (in my opinion) made Hobie a third wheel in their blooming relationship by making Miles jealous of Gwen crashing at this place tho, because besides those few random quips they really had no romantic overtones whatsoever. Also the producer teasing this movie as 'focusing on Miles and Gwen's romance' is kinda pushing it a little imo, because it's hardly even a focus lmao
@@unlawfulbl9516 ITSV won best animated feature and ATSV topped it bro. ATSV is a lock for a nomination and probably a lock for the win in that category. And if the Academy somehow gets past their animation hate, maybe even nominated for best picture.
As progressive and inclusive as it ACTUALLY IS, Its not stomping you in the face with "The Message" so theres no way itll even be on the oscars radar. Its just TOO damn good of a movie
@@Mialikesthings Yeah but that sounds diverse so its not surprising. Jokes aside idk the film so i cant comment on how good it is but its at the point where you have to question if a movie wins based on merit or pandering.
u gotta admit they did a really good job with setting up a cliffhanger that was still a pretty satisfying place to end a lot of ppl were only upset because that’s how they found out it was a one-parter but they said that it would be one like a long ass time ago
The visuals were jaw dropping, the music was breathtaking and engaging and the emotional moments HIT. I love how those moments are allowed to develop and sit with the characters / audience instead of being undermined by a cheap joke. This is peak cinema. Hats off to everyone involved
Yeah, was a amazing movie. I didn't know it was part 1, but the build up at the end definitely gave that feeling and knew it was coming. So glad they made both 2 and 3 at the same time, because that cliffhanger had me wanting to see the next movie so bad! So good!
Actually there is one moment that is interrupted by a joke and I think it’s brilliant. Spoilers but at the end miles has a heartfelt chat with his mom and reveals to her he’s Spider-Man. Which she reacts to saying “who spider man?” and “is this some kinda cosplay?” The tone quickly changing from dramatic to comedic. This whiplash creates confusion which is payed off with the “oh shit” reveal that Mile’s is on the wrong earth
@@kingkeeper3570 I agree. You think she's just being a clueless mom at first (upon further inspection, it wouldn't make sense for her not to know, considering her husband works with him frequently). Then it sinks in that she's the wrong mom when Uncle Arron comes through.
The new additions to the cast like Hobie and Pavitr elevated the movie to a level I didn't known was possible. The way the narrative handles its side characters is nothing short of exemplary. Stellar work.
This. They weren't just minor additions to the cast like Peni, Noir and Ham, who didn't really have an arc or do too much, cool as they were; Hobie and Pavitr actually really contributed and were significant to the overall plot.
The whats up danger scene is masterclass. But I think the "Nah, Imma do my own thing" scene and the falling apart scene as well as the first 20 minutes in gwens world are for me even better.
The writing was soooo damn good I’m actually quite confident they’ll end it with a 10/10. Setups were done so perfectly, the payoffs should be downhill
I personally found some of the writing to be shaky. Gwen's Peter Parker and the whole thing of how he actively transformed himself into the Lizard "just to be special" or how apparently no one saw/remembered him trying to kill people as a giant Lizard at a school dance and her Dad just accepts that Spiderwoman is a murderer. It also seems a bit odd that no Peter Parker or Spiderman questions Miguel in his information and how they all just accept his theory that only he himself has witnessed (in an event that couldn't even be considered a Peter Parker/Spiderman canon event) - I mean, he traveled to another world to trick a family he was someone he's not and nobody thinks that's just a tiny bit shady or he might be wrong at any point.
@@thehumanity0Miguel wasn't the only spider-person present when that universe colapsed, in the scene it happens you can spot others trying to rescue people too. This, and Jessica Drew dialogue in Mumbatthan implying they also saw that happen more times, can explain why the spiders follow Miguel so easily. But how the alternate Miguel was a key point to a canon event is a actual plothole, hope Beyond adresses it
@@doxdoc591 Yeahhh pretty sure Miguel traveling to a new universe to take over another spiderman's life is so out of canon it's absurd. That's why I theorized that he must be lying and thus it's ridiculous all the other Spidermen just follow him despite his shady story (also he literally acts like an unhinged villain in front of all of them). Either way, there's some pretty big holes in the writing, which is my main point. It ain't no 10/10 - only the visuals get a 10/10
I really don't get people saying this isn't a complete experience. Miles longs to be part of a team and ends up having to go it alone. Gwen resists being part of a band and becomes the leader of a group of Spider people. There arcs are pretty complete. As far as cliffhangers go, this was more satisfying than Dune, Fellowship, and I'll say it, Empire.
Agreed. The cliffhanger was earned AND arcs were completed. I was honestly happy to see it end because i knew they couldn't wrap everything up in 25 minutes , so seeing another 2+ hr movie is going to come out soon just made me so excited.
A lot of people who watched this like myself are just casual superhero movie fans. The plot was being set up the whole time and the villain became very powerful and then nothing happened. It’s set up but there was no final battle. That’s why people didn’t enjoy it (like me). I like to see a payoff it just is unfinished
Even if we were assuming their character arcs were mostly complete, the story is 100% not complete & you completely miss out on any narrative-based payoff their character arcs bring to the table in a final battle or confrontation that carries the weight of that emotion.
@thehumanity0 Outwitting Miguel, Gwen reconciling with her father, Miles coming out to his mom, Spot breaching Miles' universe were all payoffs. Minus definitively defeating an antagonist, they're pretty much going to have to start new arcs for the main characters if the next movie is going to be any good. I'm not denying there's still unfinished business, but I think as a middle chapter of a trilogy, this is as complete as it gets. The only other middle chapter movie that does it better, IMO, is maybe the Two Towers. Think about the first Tobey McGuire Spidey. He kills Goblin takes on the mantle of Spider-Man, but we don't get any resolution to what this means for his relationship with Harry or MJ. And that's the first movie. He just gets to murder the baddie.
He only briefly touched on it because of spoilers, but both main antagonists of this film were so well fleshed out and they each only got about half of the movie’s screen time. Miguel in particular basically has the one scene where he explains the spiderverse and then a long ass chase and he still feels so compelling
Thank you so much Marcus for giving rep to Daniel Pemberton. I feel a lot of people slept on his score from ITSV, but I can bet that more will appreciate his musical expertise for this one now. It's already one of my favorite original scores of any CBM and probably close to my favorite next to ITSV. All love man 💙
The score stands out even more in ATSV imo. Probably my fault for not paying enough attention to the first movie, but I remember the important stuff like Prowler's theme and so on.
@@HellfireComms I catched so many of the same leitmotifs from the first film from each character and hearing their variations thru the emotional or dramatic moments made the experience insane to me
The thing I like most about this movie is how it lovingly ties in all Spiderman media in such a cohesive way. From the very first comic, to the live action movies, video games, all the animated tv series, and even some shout outs to fanmade material. You really get to appreciate just how much this character means to so many people, and see how much that character has grown and evolved over the years.
I’m so happy you touched so heavily on the score! Also I completely agree that I feel like I can’t fully say how good this is on its own yet, without comparing I just know that I love it!
I agree the conclusion can feel weaker in comparison to the first. But I believe it had a really good subtle conclusion. (SPOILER) Just like you said, Gwen really feels like the second main character, and she receives a conclusion to her emotional arc. Additionally, Miles emotional doubts about his family and trust are slightly resolved by the end. I genuinely believe that this movie is better than the first.
I actually completely agree with this, it reminds me of empire in the way that the co-lead(s) (Gwen/Han + Leia) complete an arc while the other, perhaps more prominent lead (Miles/Luke) is left on a cliffhanger
right? The end of Miles' arc in this movie is the decision to break from the norm, to go in his own direction. His "nah" is such a satisfying resolution to the struggles he's faced throughout the movie. His desire to belong and to find himself concludes in that realisation. It's incredible
@@zumabbar i think it went a tad too long for the perfect spot, it wouldve made fans probably more mad. But I think it shouldve ended with just Uncle Aaron saying “im not the prowler” the fact that it shows more and the fact that it shows the team Gwen built but she recruits them off screen… yea the last little bit imo is basically a trailer lol.
I see your argument that the film is incomplete and I raise you “I don’t care because what’s there is still some of the best material I’ve ever seen in any movie ever.”
Worth noting that the director Joaquim Dos Santos was also a director on Avatar The Last Airbender and executive producer for Legend Of Korra. Dude is a god.
@@darrylbrumfield7659 I just realize what I said, I’m gonna have to edit my comment. What I MEANT was it has the best animation ever, not that it’s the best animated movie ever (although I thoroughly love it).
This was the first time in my life that I watched a movie 2 times in 3 days enjoying both equally. Seriously this is so packed, so dense, so well animated that you can watch even 3 times without getting bored.
That was me verbatim, I might possibly go a 3rd time with some family friends of mine. First time I went with my gf, then the homies, now family friends
The easter eggs alone can keep you entertained for multiple watches. Apparently the Spider-Man popsicle is in the background during one of the chases and I completely missed that until I saw a meme pointing it out lol can't wait to see it again
I would disagree that the movie feels incomplete. Both Miles and Gwen have reached a satisfying point in their character arcs in this movie. Gwen reconciling with her father and finally learning to accept the help of others by literally bringing the band back together. Miles realizing that he does not need to be defined by others and choosing to go his own way, pretending to act weak and desperate while preparing a venom strike. It leaves on a cliffhanger yes, but it doesn't feel like one that left the characters still entirely up in the air. I'd say it's a lot like LotR in that regard
I also enjoyed the shot reverse shot idea because it does mimick a comic book really well. I remember seeing a video breaking down the first issue of Spider-man in 1961 and the backgrounds were solid colors to represent the mental state of the characters.
the first movies lighter cleaner and simpler it was perfect. 2nd one was heavier messier and somehow prettier not quite perfect but insanely good i actually preferred the 2nd one from what ive seen so far
I love the way they use the analysis of the Spider-Man narrative within the movie and ties it to what people expect from minority group stories by using that scene with the guidance counselor and the college essay. It sheds so much light on how people think that the stories of marginalized people always have to revolve around trauma to be interesting or to be valid. Miles not only makes the choice to reject that in the movie by rejecting the Spider-Man canon, but the filmmakers reject that THROUGH the movie by not making his story about fitting in as an Afrolatino kid and not centering race trauma in the story. While that is the story of many, it isn’t the story of Miles, and that’s okay. He doesn’t have to justify his right to exist by going through trauma. He is already proud of his culture, and he is no less a spider person if he doesn’t adhere to the “canon.”
Holy crap. Good catch, really throws the whole "that spider never should've bit you, you stole the spot of another, more deserving Spider-Man" into a new light for me, too
Couple of notes. First off, I actually thought the pacing was really great. I know it was slower. But it still didn't feel slow to me. It felt grow up, relaxed, comfortable. Not slow. Second. I haven't seen anyone mention Gwyn's theme has an adapted motif from the "Spider Man" theme song. The guitar plays the same first 6 notes, but with different pacing over the etherial synths at 1:17. For some reason, to me, that was my favorite music moment of the entire score.
I thought it was perfect. Visually stunning, and a theater experience like I’ve never had before. *SPOILERS BELOW* The slow collective realization that we were nearing the end of the runtime as everything was going to shit (narratively speaking, of course) was an incredible moment. The plot twists, Gwen and her Dad’s emotional arc, Miguel as a villain, everything was just perfect. I sat in the theater absolutely stunned as the credits rolled. The first Spiderverse was a 10, and I think this one might just be an 11.
@@onepresence9460 yeah, it’s not like this movie is a surprise success and now they’re trying to think of a story for the third. i’m sure the entire story plot has been written well before the production of this movies animation even began. it is not going to miss and it’s gonna be huge in terms of cultural phenomenon
@@andrewnugent6207 Don't be too doubtful. Remember: The development team is the same in Part 2 as it is for Part 1. People doubt because of the sequel effect but you need to remember that the team behind this film are STILL working. Their momentum and pacing remain. They're not resting. They're working as we speak. So rest assured, friend: While some development teams take years between projects and lose that oomf, that won't be happening here.
The amount of references to other Spider-Man media in this movie is honestly crazy like the fact that there’s a full cameo with the venom movie, the insomnia video game and all the past Spider-Man movies is awesome and they where able to fit it all into the movie without it feeling like they’re just throwing references in our face just for the sake of it
I agree with the majority of this analysis but I think the logic of it being a first parter and therefore couldn’t be a 10 or better than the first solely because it’s a first parter and couldn’t be a 10 by design is a little off, I think even without a complete, 2 part story there is still a very recognizable climax and resolution in the film; just because everything doesn’t come to a conclusion doesn’t mean this movie lacked one in its own right. Just because there is more to see doesn’t mean what I have seen isn’t perfect in my opinion. I don’t think considering this better than the first is laughable at all, but I totally see why people would think the first is better.
The problem is not that it's just a first part but that it has no ending. Infinity war was just a first part and still feels like it's own movie. This movie just doesn't end. Doesn't tie anything up. It just opens packages of plots and leaves it's sequel to close them.
Thank you. I just wrote a fucking thesis a minute ago in the comments about this exact thing. Isolating the reasoning. No climax or a cliffhanger ending = minus points. That's what everyone says. but Infinity War ends on a cliffhanger and everyone says that ones better than endgame. But cliffhanger. we end the movie without an ending to the story. So shouldn't we minus points on it? Or are we just gonna ignore the thought of it NEEDING to be a linear vanilla progression of story telling, and instead ju dging the movie on all of it's feats like we should? Because me for one I love the first one, I was afraid this one wouldnt be as good because sequels rarely are. But I think personally this one was better, but at the very very least, this one holds up perfectly with the 1st movie and both should be heralded as Champions of Animation, and Super hero diamond standard of story telling. Not 1 below the other, both equal sitting at the top. and if the 3rd one holds up, then I want the 3 of them up on that pedestal because they deserve it.
i completely agree my mind instantly goes to empire strikes back which ended on a massive cliffhanger and not all of the loose ends were closed but its easily a superior sequel.
It’s the middle part in a trilogy. So ya, there’s gonna be a mean ass cliffhanger and it’s not gonna wrap up as nicely. But it’s gonna pay off so well when the 3rd comes around
This was so refreshing. I’m so glad someone is doing something cutting edge with animation now Disney has given up. Stunning movie. Can’t wait for the next one.
My favorite part of this movie had to be Miles and Gwen's relationship, it just feels so fleshed out and deep. Both miss each other deeply and their eventual reunion just feels so earned and scenes like the upside-down clocktower scene or when they're just chilling eating the food at the party. Platonic or romantic, their interactions were just perfect to me and the complications with Miguel and keeping Miles in the dark was so hard to watch but so well done. I hope they end up together but either way I'm confident the team will give them both good endings. 11/10 movie my mind is blown
Personally I love the family bits, so many stories with young protagonists either make them dead, conveniently absent or somewhat worried but nowhere near they should with such changes. They really go deep into not only how the mantle screws the life of a high schooler but how is pretty much impossible to the parents be chill with their kid suddenly showing up buff, having time windows where he’s totally unaccounted for and clearly hiding something big and I appreciate how they kept their reaction realistic without turning them into a hindrance in the way of Miles saving the day.
Its also a fairly complex relationship. Like, obviously miles is in love with her and wants to be with her, but even if that didn't happen you know they still have a deep enough love for each other that even if it didn't become romantic, they would still need each other
Thanks cosmonaut. Not a single other person has reviewed this movie as honestly as you. You are the only person who has encapsulated my feelings on the film. I love it, but it hasn’t fully matched the level of the first film which has like 3 different parts that leave me with chills every single time I watch.
This is EXACTLY how I felt about the movie. You did an amazing job articulating this movie's high highs and the things that just didn't quite work as well as the first one.
I love how Gwen’s universe was kinda like a water color pallet. When she was sad or something it would fade down or change to a darker color. Her universe is def my favorite 🤍
My problem with Across/Beyond compared to Into (and this is a hypothetical assuming both of the 2 parters are already out) is that Into feels like I watched a film, Across and Beyond together feels like I'm watching a TV series and that I'd've binged it in two parts. I like the complete short story of Into. That said Across so far succeeds on everything else that Into did perfectly
My opinion is that this was fucking incredible and many individual components are better than the OG, but man, nothing will ever top the leap of faith scene in the first movie.
This movie's animation was gorgeous, and all the character work done was incredible. I loved the watercolour style in Gwen's universe as well, really helped exemplify her emotions
I can't tell you how many people have told me that Across The Spider-Verse had a satisfying finale and was better than the original... it's just mindblowing. I enjoyed Across the Spider-Verse, but it isn't a full movie... thank you for being sane and recognising that!
@@-Scrapper- Glad it worked for you. I actively avoid anything about certain films, and this was one of them. So you can probably tell I felt a little blinded side. When then drums kicked in I knew it was coming to an end… I then did the Ace Venture meme of spitting out my drink “Oh, come on!”
As soon as the ‘to be continued’ I instantly thought "that’s it?". Definitely needs to be judged as a whole movie with the 2nd part. But so far so good
i agree with reading the first half of a book analogy you gave, but i also think that while parts feel like theyre unresolved, left for part 2, there are a lot of character arcs in this movie that i feel have a strong enough resolution that this can stand on its own, where i can personally say i enjoyed more then the first, though i also agree with some pacing issues
I'm so glad you mentioned the score because that was one of the aspects that I noticed the most. It's so beautiful and goes so hard. I'm in love with the score.
"its like reading a book halfway through and calling it 10/10, it wouldnt make any sense to do that" bro YOU did that when you watched samurai jack. Gave it a 10/10 when the revival season was halfway through airing, and we all know how the second half of the season turned out... Its okay to say something is a 10/10 without knowing the conclusion yet, especially in this case since its a complete movie. We havent seen the end yet, but the journey to get there that we've been on has been perfect.
Said my thoughts out loud completely man, I loved the art style and the music of this film but just the fact it's only Part 1 brings it down a little for me. Great video as always!
PERFECTLY said. I've not seen anyone who sums up my thoughts on 'Across' better than this. The biggest problem with the movie is that it's NOT a movie. It's the first half of a movie.
I think the first one's narrative was concluded. The second one makes you want more. The 1st one has an epic scene of the leap of faith. I think the reason why i really like the 2nd is having every single spiderman possible and not affecting narrative. No way home is a nostalgia bait and when you watch a few times, you just fast-forward to when the 3 are on the screen. I like that this film gives every single character something to do. The Canon Event is explained and its heartbreaking. The Spot is gonna be bombastic
The fact that they matched or arguably passed or the quality of the second movie gives me confidence that they will finish stron. To me this seems like a trilogy that had a solid plan from the beginning, unlike the sequels for Star Wars. I have a great feeling about this and that it might be one of the best trilogies I’ve seen
Absolutely loved this movie. Phenomenal animation, excellent characters and a killer soundtrack to compliment the ambience of the film. The credits of this movie is one of the only times I stayed in the theatre just to watch it because they were just as captivating as the movie itself. I get why Cosmonaut (and a few others) feel like this movie isn't complete because it's building up to something (as per Loki) but I give that a pass because it not only allows them to tell a grander story with more time, but they'll definitely keep to their promise and give us an ending they want. Hopefully, Loki Season 2 is as good as the first, but I honestly have no doubt Beyond the Spider-Verse will be a great ending.
Here's what I said to my friends about this film: 8/10 imo, it's half of a movie innit Everything about it is class though, my goodness this film has STYLE. Love how they leaned into the style even more than before and made it absolutely amazing. The colour palettes for each universe and character are unbelievably creative. Some of the emotional scenes especially between Gwen and her dad, the way the backgrounds look and change and the way tu ey portray lighting on their faces... The entire runtime, every action sequence, every movement, every bit of dialogue, just... Its all dripping with swagger. The animators were flexing through the whole film. All the voice acting? The story beats? The OST? The characters portrayed? Small interactions that contributed to the future? If it wasn't half a movie and didn't feel so rushed at times, this would be perfection. I know I clown on the MCU for their constant jokes, but here, it fits. The film takes itself seriously when it needs to and doesn't when its not necessary. The shift from comedic tone to serious is never so jarring as it is in most MCU films. And of course, it helps that theyre not trying to make the animation look realistic in the slightest. 8/10, bit rushed and it's only half a film, but fuck is everything else about this perfect.
This movie is incredible. Visually it's almost magical ✨ You can feel the artists' love for the characters and comics. It's dynamic as hell. I did really like how they used color in the scene between Gwen and her dad. I went into this blind so it was so cool to see everything set up, the darker tone, the themes, and character arcs. The wow factor was off the charts. My friend has read the comics but didn't spoil it for me. I loved the first one and I think I love this one even more. Agree the second scene with the parents dragged a bit but knowing now it's a setup for a second part it was important to establish the stakes and conflict into the next film.
