Acrylic engraving for LED light base using Glowforge laser and Silhouette Studio

If you click on the Amazon link to see what the fan looks like it will help you visualize my description- I have a vent hose that comes off the back of the GF (where it typically vents from) that runs to the right side of my AC Infinity fan and then a vent hose on the left side that goes from the fan to the window. The GF's internal fan can then be turned off which reduces the noise. This is a very common add on/change many users do, but of course it isn't from GF so do so at your own discretion. Edit- lmk if a video of the setup would be helpful and I'll add it to my list!

Good catch! I had to go back afterwards and figure that out myself. Here's what happened: I had previously created the text, not for GF use originally. Turns out the Lady Crockett portion was actually 2 layers with one on top of the other (Lady Crockett with an offset around it- LC being layer 1 on top and offset being layer 2 under that). The GF cancels out items if they are layered on top of each other and that is why only the offset portion got engraved; it was the only part not being masked by the top layer. So if you, or whoever ends up reading this also, ever has this same issue or the laser seems to go through the motions but nothing's there- check your file to make sure there are no layering issues. I went to my file, did release compound path and was able to pull the layers apart and 🤦‍♀️ but I like it just as much this way, thankfully.

You will need the Business Edition of the software to save as SVG. The cheapest place to buy it is usually swingdesign.com for $48 to upgrade from basic to business, one time fee.

This was proofgrade material from Glowforge, but now I buy my acrylic from Cerulean Tides Laser Supplies because GF is sold out of most material. If you got your material from a store like Home Depot it is probably extruded instead of cast acrylic and I don't think extruded would work as well.

If your design is too tall it will have issues reaching all the way to the top. Also the light shows up better in the engraved areas so if you are using thin lines for the design or font, you can consider thickening them up. The acrylic here was from glowforge. If you are using an acrylic from a store like Home Depot or Lowes that could be an issue as well because it is often a different type of acrylic.

Make sure your image isn't huge and don't have too much space between the light base and where you design begins. Defocusing as discussed in the video should help also.

What im going to do is put lights on the Side in a WoodFrame

Do I need to Intensify the Laser or just set it to what the Glowforge Sets it to.

@@markchapman826 I would use the recommended GF settings but defocus it using the instructions in the video. I have not used lights around a frame yet, but that's a cool idea!

@@LadyCrockettCrafts yeah see i do woodwork and that is part of the reason why I got the Glowforge Plus I got the Pro. Also im having a problem with it saying that its cooling down. Does it need to be in a room with a certain temperature

Oh no! Are you using the one I linked in the description? Those are the only ones I have used so far. Try carefully giving the 1/4" a firm push in there 💪 Materials will also vary in thickness some even though they are labeled as 1/8 and 1/4. You could try sticking a corner of the material in the base to see how it fits before trying to cut it.

@@LadyCrockettCrafts no i actually bought night lights and they CAME with acrycli and that still wasn't a snug fit fromt to back. I used the PG acrylic for the lamp bases (from a buy-in group) and same issue with both thicknesses. It's not a huge deal though!

@@wedontdeservedogs wow, crazy it came with acrylic and wasnt a good fit! Calipers can be used to measure the base's slot too and then use the calipers to measure the material to see if they are about the same... but knowing me I'd probably shim it when to loose or hammer it in to MAKE it fit haha
