I saw John Carpenter's The Thing for the first time when I was in 6th grade. That fuckin dog kennel scene traumatized me. After a few rewatches, I can fully appreciate the greatness of the masterpiece

If you want more actual scary movies, I highly recommend Rosemary’s Baby, Jacob’s Ladder, and Talk to Me. They’re amazing movies and genuinely scary

I have a very specific fear that I might accidentally pass by a t.v playing the kitchen scene from The Sixth Sense, for some reason, that ghost specifically from that one scene absolutely terrifys me. The actress who played her just gave such an authentic performance and I can still picture her expressionless grimace at Cole and hear all the things she blurted out in rage. Really not up to see that scene again.

I’ve seen dozens of horror movies throughout my life, but the only movie that still manages to scare me to this day is The Sixth Sense. Living through life getting attacked and stalked by ghosts with no one to help you sounds absolutely terrifying

My favorite thing about the Cenobites is that they aren't really "evil". They DEFINITELY aren't good guys, but they do not hurt "innocents". You sign up for their experience, they're simply a consequence of your actions.

2:46, All I know is though The Thing may have inspired Among Us, but if the real Thing were in the game, no one would make it for the simple fact that exposing it would mean getting mauled to death by a meat monster and made into another meat monster in turn. The paranoia in The Thing is effective enough, but the actual creature itself is terrifying. A sentient virus that infects and transforms any creature it can get access to into more of itself. Everything you are, everything that identifies you, torn apart and repurposed by some monster that only values its own survival and to spread itself into everything else it can. A germaphobes worst nightmare, especially when the Thing’s disguises come undone and some of most disgusting imagery ever put on a screen assaults the scientists and the audience as its transformations become just as unpredictable as the creature itself, making it that much more dangerous when it gets cornered. And the thought than being anywhere close to it can mean sharing the fate of others who’ve had their identities stolen and been reduced to “things” only makes trying to overcome it that much scarier. Watching the film, I thought they stood no chance of beating it simply because of its unpredictable transformations (the biggest example being Norris’s chest suddenly opening up into a shark’s mouth). Even its blood can move on it own, just think of all the ways it could use that.

The Thing is easily one of the scariest for sure for a multitude of reasons. Not only are you unsure who to trust but the whole film explores Cosmic or Lovecraftian horror, which is rooted in the fear of the unknown and the existential dread that comes from witnessing something beyond your comprehension. It's that feeling that no matter what you do, you will loose and everything was for nothing. It's why Blare freaks out the way does and tries to kill everyone, because he knows there's not much around it, and the thought of being taken over so quickly drives him mad.

that last one is definitely the scariest for me too. This is why I can watch more things with aliens or dumb decisions. Because if it’s a random situation from human’s (like slashers) that is happening to me because I was just there is terrifying. The idea of it being possible to occur is scarier than the movie itself.

Hellraiser (& it's book) is awesome. It's different and I've always enjoyed the Cenobite story. It's scary that Pinhead and his cohorts aren't really the villains of the movie.

Hereditary, Sinister, Event Horizon, and The Descent come to mind as the scariest for me. As Above so Below and It Follows are really good as well.

Since The Strangers scared you, I recommend you watch The Poughkeepsie Tapes! I won't say that the protagonists are less dumb then the ones in The Strangers (there's a lengthy home invasion scene where I was dumbfounded how they couldn't see the killer walking around with a huge video camera, lol) and the police procedurals are questionable imo - but it's still a very well-made found-footage horror movie, especially since it follows the format of a crime documentary.

Hereditary came out when I was around 9-10 yrs old, and when I watched it I didn't really understand the context, thought it was a stupid movie, and I left. Upon rewatching a few years later, OH MY GOD it was one of the best movies I had ever seen. It wouldn't be an understatement to say that this has been and forever will be my favorite movie. 10/10, must watch. The depth of the movie, the details, the storyline? Way too good.
