As General Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate army reaches their capital city of Richmond, Johnston finds himself with his back against the wall and his enemies from Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac cornering him on all sides. With mounting pressure from Confederate President Jefferson Davis to strike back against the massive Federal army which is now at the gates of Richmond, Johnston spots an opportunity to devise a bold and daring counter-strike against McClellan's army, divided between the Chickahominy and Pamunkey rivers, and split in two. If Johnston's plan works, it could possibly force McClellan on the defensive and give the initiative to the Confederates. But as the saying goes, "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."

As someone who lives in the area, I can tell you that the Chickahominy, when it rains, swells up rapidly and floods the nearby swamps across a wide plain. As for White Oak Swamp, it’s essentially a miniature version of the Chickahominy, though, unlike the chickahominy, the swampland is fairly patchy and isn’t confined entirely to white oak creek. Most of the roads seen still exist in their original location. For instance, the intersection where Nine Mile Road meets with Old Hanover Road still exists with the railway line still crossing through the intersection. Similarly, where Nine Mile Road and Beulah Road (the road that leads to Charles City Road) intersects with Williamsburg Road, it still exists, but with the addition of the Seven Pines National Cemetery on the corner of the road. However, the structures in the area as well as the field that this battle took place are long gone. Instead, the small village of Sandston and the adjacent Highland Springs take up most of the first and second lines while the picket line is right on the edge of Richmond International Airport (originally known as Byrd Airfield). I-64 also runs parallel to the former Richmond and York River Railroad, which juts out of the flat landscape. There’s a few areas of land that haven’t been fully claimed by development, but they’re only small patches, which leaves Seven Pines National Cemetery as the last bit of the battlefield dedicated to the battle.

Excellent work, as always. I have been interested in American Civil War for several years, but unfortunately there is little information about it in Belarussian and Russian languages. Now i personaly write articles about ACW in Russian. My interest is not commercial. It's just a hobby. Can i add fragments of your videos to articles as an animated maps? Of course, by mentioning your channel as a source. Thank you for your attention.

Excellent video, and explanation of the engagement, of Seven Pines, at that time Joe Johnson, was a decent Commander, for the defensive minded CSA, who were still practicing caution. As for Little Mac, the Union Commander, thank God, he was over cautious, and pretty much self absorbed by his own ego, and pride? During the battle when R E Lee took over the Army of Northern Virgina, the entire situation litterly changed for the South and they had the best Commander, they could of possibly asked for. The factors in war are so unpredictable, that even today with all the modern gadgets,weapons, tactics and evolution of things? You still can only guess of assume what your enemy is going too do!!! Sorry for being long on tongue here, but as I said great video, and explanation of the Battle. WR,🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🌈🌈👍👍😎😎🍺🍺✍️✍️🎺🥁🎺🥁🎺

There are a lot of pronunciations that sound "weird" to my ears. This could explaine it. At first i was thinking it was an AI-voice, having problems with the pronunciations. I am not an american, so i really can't tell the dialects, how they differ in pronunciation, from state to state.

It's too bad that right over Casey's Redoubt and the Twin Houses is the Richmond International Airport. Some of the earthworks shown at 6:25 are still there, though. The Fair Oaks Station intersection shown at 7:05 is still there, and a siege gun mounted on a railroad car passed through there - the first use of railroad artillery in warfare.
@MatthewChenault
@MatthewChenault 2 года назад
Well, no. The location of the houses is most likely not on the airport property, but within the village of Sandston. Sandston sits directly overtop the space where the first and second defensive lines were placed while the picket line was directly on the edge of the airport property. In fact, the local library is built basically on top of some of the earthworks later built during the 1864 campaign, which was built nearby where the twin houses would have stood.

It strikes me that I‘m not even sure whether this whole campaign was even covered in my history textbook. I read most of the parts about the civil war evidently didn‘t find it. Given how important it was to the war and especially to the military politics of the Union side, this seems pretty shocking. It‘s both McClellans big failure, the (probably) reason the CSA survived to fight at Gettysburg etc and I‘m guessing was also a factor for Lee‘s reputation. Also explains why Lincoln ended up promoting someone like Grant in the end, without attributing any kind of providential wisdom to either man. I would have had so many heart attacks about this whole thing if I were Lincoln.

Up until this point Johnston has handled himself well as an army commander. What the fuck happened here? Did he not explain his orders clearly to his subordinates? Did the weather prevent his orders from getting to them? Did he just have a brain fart?

@@WarhawkYT If Dan Sickles had been in command at Little Bighorn, he would not only not do reconnaissance and advance into horrible tactical position, he’d order his troops not to load their guns and still manage to claim victory. Dan Sickles is inevitable.
