My dad, who was Native American, took us to the movies, not expecting this at all. He sat there in shock as the entire theater roared with laughter and cheered. Probably the best movie moment of his life, next to Bullitt.
@@purpledodecahedron7169 I’m not Native but I’d believe the spoken history passed down from generations of Native Americans before I’d believe something in my American history book. 💯
Historical brilliance aside, it's also great character growth for Wednesday. She'd spent the entire movie in open defiance of society, but finally learned that playing along can offer a better chance to strike. Don't even get me started on the irony that it ends with her first legitimate smile.
The real magic of this scene isn't the historical catharsis, it's that Wednesday, a social reject and outcast, led the other rejects in staging a massive coup. True leadership.
Yep she's truly a rebel... Persuaded and ecouraged them to take part of the rebellion against the camp councillors and those associated with them. I'll say sweet vengeance...
@@donpula6349 Lesson Learned: Show respect to the quiet kids and the outcasts. They are more capable than they appear. “That kids in a wheel chair, what is he gonna do run me over?” Quite possibly…maybe not with the wheel chair but…
That's what this version did better than the new netflix show. In the netflix show, even though the 'original outcasts' were native people, in Wednesday times they made the outcast school full of people with cool powers.
That comment about how Native Americans “didn’t have shampoo” is funny when you consider that we know indigenous Americans actually bathed daily… and pilgrims certainly did not😭 if anyone was dirty and uncivilized it was the Europeans
Ah yess. All oppressors must have been filthy and the oppressed all must have been pure clean angels. Mentioning of india truly helped. A nation known for hygiene.
@@Maialeen The Europeans at the time certainly weren't "filthy," but many Indigenous Americans, especially those with tons of access to clean, fresh water (like the Ojibwe) definitely bathed very regularly To your point about India, the word "shampoo" literally comes from Hindi...
Joshua Heap And if we're so primitive, then why did your government base HALF of its constitution from our laws?? Your symbols on the backs of your currency are our symbols, with the exception of those from masonic origin. You know nothing of what you talk about and just like your government leaders you open your mouth when it's obvious that you have nothing educational to say. Go sit down and study your own history and then realize that it was your ancestors who were primitive whom sought the help of mine in order for you to survive. Now say something Joshua.....i'm waiting...
I find that line ironic since many Europeans of that time period had little to no schooling and girls weren't even allowed to attend school. Also, the minimal schooling that boys got was usually limited to "read the bible" and "Xenophobia 101". Native Americans, tho, taught all of their children about their heritage, about respect, about the balance of nature, and about why everything was shaped and colored the way it was
The Addams family is a parody of superficial American values such as inclusion and individuality. When these are carefully scrutinised, it shows that inclusion is only surface level and individuality is forcefully stamped out in favor of following the status quo.
Yes except the fact that native Americans had very little to do with the first Thanksgiving. If you start quoting school history you should know its doctored heavily.

kateofthecity ironically Wednesday would have avenged native Americans by revolt against pilgrim and colonist that took their land destroy their culture and way of alive and enslavement and genocide of native Americans
Alot of people think this movie was just about a weird family, but no...this movie went further. It revealed actual facts about how society will often try to cover up the reality of things, force people into line or ridicule anyone they deem out of place. The whole idea of the Addams family is not how strange they are, but how we probably feel compared to the larger groups of society who believe they are the shining example, when in reality they are just as bad. For example: Debbie appears all pure and innocent, but in reality she's a psychopath. The camp leaders believe they are setting a great example to all young people, but really they are completely disrespecting kids they see do not fit into their category, not to mention trying to forcefully convert them. This movie is deeper then it seems.
That's why in a nutsheel the Addams Familly is such a good story and character. They have so many good values hidden beneath a deliberate and misdirecting demeanor. Satire et it's finest in my opinion. Black humor and cynic humor is also favs of mine, so there.
You can see how terrible the camp leaders are if you see who’re the pilgrims and who’re the Natives. The natives are mostly played by the imperfect kids; ones with large glasses, one who’s in a wheel chair, one with a cast around his neck, Wednesday, etc. Basically any person who’s not ideal or “perfect” to most’s mind, aka the camp leaders.
This monologue, superbly delivered by Christina Ricci, is timeless in a way that makes it relevant decades after the film was made. It is also the best argument against hiring cutsey child actors.
It's kind of sad to be honest, especially since Amanda's parents are the only ones who tried to do something, but then again she was the only one who was in any real danger. The others were just chased around and put through some discomfort.
I think it’s a throw back to the first episode of the 50s show. The kids weren’t going to school, and when asked why their father simply answered “Why have kids if your just going to send them away.”
Venomous Actually they accidentally brought plagues that killed over 90% of the native population, THEN we kicked their asses...or rather we kicked them while they were down.
This is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. Between Wednesdays character growth, the historical accuracy, and all the “Outcast” kids rebelling against their oppressors, it’s a wonderfully fun revenge plot.
“The historical accuracy” 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻 For one, Pocahontas wasn’t around for the first thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving celebration was 1619 and she was dead in 1617. Very historically accurate though according to you 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
I didn't see the Wampanoag attacking the Narragansett Nation... so no oppressors were attacking in the skit. You should learn more and stop throwing the word "oppressors" around so lightly. The Pilgrims were welcomed by the Wampanoag and considered family. The Narragansetts were trying to steal their land, demand taxes, and oppress the Wampanoag because the Narragansetts had a god-complex (for not being affected by an endemic that wiped out the Wampanoag. Very cowardly, rather than challenge the Wampanoag when they were at their full strength the Narragansetts came after them when the Wampanoag were decimated, broken-hearted, and grieving something like a 90% death rate of the ENTIRE NATION!. www.nps.gov/rowi/learn/historyculture/wampanoag.htm#:~:text=With%20the%20Wampanoag%20nation%20weakened%2C%20the%20Narragansett%20tried,support%20in%20defending%20their%20land%20from%20the%20Narragansett. The Pilgrims were the Wampanoag's protectors!
I have to give it to Amanda. Her confused horror as Wednesday went off script. To the muffled screaming after being put on the pyre with an apple gagging her. To the very pointed scream when Wednesday lights the match. She nailed every beat in that scene.
One part of this scene that always makes me chuckle is how they include Pocahontas in the play even though she wasn’t even in the same tribe or not even around during the first thanksgiving. XD
ME! Had the same thought. I did a report on her actual history in middle school, so when people start talking the way they have in this comment section about how accurate it is I'm like "Did we even watch the same thing?!" I mean, I love this, but not for its historical accuracy. 😂
Nah Nathan. That was Rush who was supposed to leave, remember? Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Here, I'll help you (w/my size 13 and a swift kick to your lame ass. Nice name. lmfao)

I think it's called "Handperson's Tale" these days. Not woke enough. Do better. (Yes, I'm a modern day woke puritan, colonizing the minds of the primitives with my morally superiority. Adopt my culture or face cancellation!)
Back when I was an English teacher, I'd show my pupils this clip every single time I had to celebrate this Thanksgiving bollocks with them! Greetings from Brazil!
why the hell were you celebrating thanksgiving in brazil and why not teach them some history accurate stuff like Matoaka who was the real Pocahontas rather then this propaganda or does the only thing about propaganda that angers you is when it makes white people look good and not bad bollocks to anyone who would ever trust you to teach a kid anything
@@jamescurran6277 Because the fact that the tribes fought each other as do any human groups anywhere in the world somehow justifies commiting genocide against them? Like, Jews have always been involved in wars, so that justifies the Holocaust?
I love how the glasses kid Joel says he’s betrothed to her in the play, not even wanting to look at her because though he likes her he also knows how scary she can be.
@@smaree1703 The character being Pocahontas was a decision made by the camp councillors, the racists, not Wednesday. The film was literally making fun of them for the historical inaccuracy.
Yeah, but Mercedes McNab manages not only to feign over-acting, but making it look natural and when the acting fails, as planned, shes like, completely naturally says "Gary, she's changing the words" with the utmost natural expression on her face. Christina Ricci needs to keep the frozen expression of Wednesday Addams so she does it perfectly, but objectively speaking, that's a lot easier to act then Amanda Buckman / Sarah Miller's part. Mercedes McNab plays the bitch so masterfully it makes you wonder if she's actually acting.. That's what acting is all about.
I love how cool and no-nonsense Wednesday Addams is. And how you can tell her fake smile (saying her actual lines for the pageant) from her real smile (watching her revolt against the camp be a success).
That shot of Gary and Becky tied up on a spit with apples in their mouths at the end of this scene never fails to put a smile as sinister as Wednesday's on my face! .......I dunno what that says about me.......
It says you’re glad the snobs got their karma and their just desserts. Their script was very white-supremacist and racist. Sometimes I wish I could do to my younger sister what Wednesday did to Amanda every time she acts in a snob-like manner. I don’t mind that my sister likes fine things and enjoying upper class life, but it’s not okay to act like a snob and spurn your own family for not sharing your values.
I like how the counselors give the kids access to active fires and don't expect anything to burn down... and for $20k per child you would think the camp would hire more than 2 counselors...
Hang in there my friend. Just bide your time, learn your studies well and someday everything will return to you. The winds of change are coming. Join the masses in shared humanity.
It's funny, because the counselors wanted Wednesday to be perky, clicky, and preppy, which she pretends to do, but her antagonisms with Amanda, and her revenge plot is the kind of thing a perky, clicky, preppy girl would do against her arch rival, except she did it Addams style! That look of satisfaction on her face when she lights the match was pure satisfaction.
The Addams Family and even the Munsters is really about the outsider, the rejected, those who are bullied and how in the end they are family and will defend each other. I love the concept so damn much and so far the new Wednesday series is keeping that mantra alive as well
I have tons of respect for Wednesday Addams in this scene. She deserves a big round of applause for refusing to lie about history than making it look like a fallacious Hallmark card. I'm Dominican, and the Spaniards led by Nicolas de Ovando were pretty much responsible for the eradication of the Tainos in Dominican Republic, originally called Quisqueya.
its not factual though, Pocohontas, nee, Becky ( my great grandmother directly, red boiling strong!) wasnt there at thanksgiving, and we sure as heck were powhatan royalty!! east coast bb

It's 2021 and I still watch this scene every year multiple times around Thanksgiving. There's a reason we say "Hit them with the truth" and this is a perfect example that makes me smile every time.

Youre right jasmine. And thank you for commenting truth on the dark history of the first thanksgiving. Native women were raped and had thier children killed. And the pilgrams spread diseases. The natives got revenge by slitting the pilgrams throats. Christopher columbes was from spain whom led the pilgrams. He also had his eye gouged out.
Those two camp leaders really deserved it. They were a couple of perfectionists who didn't take into consideration anyone that didn't have the same ideologists as they do, not to mention the lack of compassion or understanding towards anyone that speaks out against their ideas.
