Dave, I used water hose parts (2 way splitter, barbed fittings, etc) and it worked well, BUT I thought I could get away without the gauge! Boy was I wrong. BOTH my tires came off the bead WITH RV ANTIFREEZE LEAKING OUT. Dude, that was stressful! I thought I was going to lose a bunch on the ground! I put a ratchet strap on quickly, and aired it up, got it back on by some miracle, and was able to finish without much loss. BUT the gauge would have helped me keep an eye on the pressure, and keep SOME pressure in the tire, like 5 psi or so, and that would have helped keep the tire on the rim. Funny, when I did let all the air out initially, and it stayed on the rim, but once I started filling it with fluid and it got some weight in it, the tire then sagged and popped off the rim. I think if I had kept *some* pressure in it, like 5psi or so MINIMUM, then, it might have stayed on. Shoulda listened the first time to my buddy Dave 🙂
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow Месяц назад
for sure my son " who is a certified kubota tech" has had tires come off the bead and half off the rim. lost all the fluid! i learned from his mistake. the device they use dont have a gauge so once the tire pressure was down below 5psi bam! off the rim it came. 5psi would likely be good most likely. I tried to keep mine up as high as I could to insure my bead stayed intact. its a learning curve for sure. glad you were fast with the rachet strap! lol

Thanks Dave! It took longer to put the manifold together than it did to put the fluid in the tires. I used my 25 gallon spray rig and it worked great. My favorite part is the return line back to the spray tank so that when you let the air out any fluid flows back to the tank (no waist and no mess). I also noticed that when the fluid gets above the valve stem I could hear the sound of the fluid flowing change in the tire and knew that it was full.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 4 года назад
yes in deed that return line saved on waste and enabled me to simply over fill the tire and then drain off to the point of 75% full. with both valve stems at 12 oclock I ended up with exactly the same amount in each tire. I love this manifold and the gauge it seemed to shed a little light on what was actually happening. thanks for watching!

Great video Dave. With a little modification on using some fittings I have, I plan on using my tank sprayer to fill my 13.6-28 tires. I knew I could use my tank sprayer to fill them, this video answered a lot of questions.

glad to help Fred. lots of people have used this method since posting this video and all seem to be very happy with the results. one thing for sure if you use PVC like I did be sure and use RAIN OR SHINE pvc glue like I used because the other may not hold up to the pressure. takes a little longer for the rain or shine glue to set up but not that long maybe 15 or 20 minutes tops in the worse conditions.

glad to help there is a list of all the materials in the description. most all of it came from lowes so you can just write down what it is and drive over and pick the stuff up. it was worth buying a sprayer to fill the tires although I already had the sprayer. love2boat92 made one and shows it being used on his channel. he used a 55 gallon drum and a small pump with the same manifold I built. the windshield washer fluid was cheaper than antifreeze so I went with that.

We added antifreeze to the water on our large tractors. I made a tool for doing it out of an air tank off of a semi truck. I made a stand out of an old car wheel and welded three angle irons straight up on it so the tank would slide down in and secured it with a couple of big hose clamps. On the bottom end of the tank I cut a hole and welded in a 1/2" merchant pipe coupler and put an elbow and shut off valve. On the top of the tank I cut a hole and welded in a short 2" pipe nipple. It had a cap with a piece of round stock welded across it so it could be taken off by hand. I also cut another hole and welded in a 1/4" merchant pipe coupler and added an air schrader valve to add air pressure. Close the valve at the bottom, take off the big cap at the top, pour in the antifreeze, put the big cap back on, pressure up the tank some, open the valve at the bottom and blow the antifreeze into the tire. Worked great and made a time consuming chore real quick and super easy. No pumps.. On the out side of the valve at the bottom i adapted it to garden hose thread. I cut down a good quality garden hose to about 10 ft long so it would be easier to handle. The tire valve stem has to be in the up position on the tire. It would blow in 4 gallons at a time. We only had to put about 50 pounds of air on the tank to blow it in and that was more than enough.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 3 года назад
yes I have seen that done before with a 55 gallon drum sitting on the ground. works great still need an air compressor to replace the pump. but most people with a tractor already have an air compressor. I liked how my design could be ran right off the tractor battery. even out in the field it if had to be. the real neat part of this video is the manifold. it really comes in handy for dumping back pressure and the gauge is nice to see how much pressure you have going in the tire while filling them. it was a fun video to make and I'm so glad I finally filled my tires. made a huge difference. thanks for the great comment and for stopping by my channel.

12 oclock is the highest point 1 oclock you will loose more fluid. the object of using 12 oclock is to get the tires filled to 75% at 1 oclock the tires will be filled less than 75% hope that makes sense.

Dave, I watched this video before but I had to see it again. I just didn't remember the whole thing but I do now. That is a neat contraption and it surely worked like a champ. Now, did you over-engineer it? I don't think so. It did what you needed it to do. Now had it blown up while you were pumping fluid, that would have only been a 'technical difficulty" not a fail (ha). yes Vic I agree. after filling the tires I moved some stuff on pallets on a hillside that before had my tractor up on three wheels. after adding the ballast I was able to better lift those pallets and move them around. plus the added traction is what I was really after. my traction was so bad I could barely use the box blade uphill in two wheel drive. I hope this added ballast will help with that issue. I like to use two wheel drive most of the time. four wheel drive is harder on the machine and the tires unless you are on slick surfaces like mud or snow and maybe wet grass. hope you are both doing well thought about you as I was planning an upcoming video project I hope you will like. not sure when I will get it done. I have the stuff here to do it well most of it. to many projects not enough time.

You must live in Alaska because once you reach the freezing point of the fluid, it starts slushing up. I'm thinking people in warmer states might be able mix 50/50 water widow washer fluid. I was told when it does start to freeze, it starts with slush and would have to drop a lot more. Also it's worth mentioning that I found out 2 important things about fluid in tires, antifreeze will work BUT is hard on the rim metal. Beet juice for tires is best but expensive. And second, not all fluids have same freeze rating. If you use anti freeze fluid, check for corrosiveness on metal and freeze range. Slushy tires are one thing, rock solid is another.

That's great Dave I bought a small 110v pump and put it in a 5 gallon bucket it worked good but not as fast as your pump. I got down to the last gallon to put in and the tire came off the bead from the weight and I lost almost all my washer fluid.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 лет назад
oh man that sucks! I was so worried I would come off the bead as well. this is why I used the backhoe riggers to lift it up good. I started to use a jack but I knew if it fell off the jack I would surely break the bead then. it all went pretty well.
@victorcastle1840
@victorcastle1840 6 лет назад
Hi Dave, I was wondering why not just jack tire up enough that the bottom is round ? Maybe even ease it back down a little. Then it shouldn't come off the bead, should it ?
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 лет назад
he Vic I'm not real sure. according to my son who worked for Kubota tire beads do come loose when doing this occasionally. its no real solution other than leave enough air in the tire to keep that from happening. my original theory was to leave 30 psi of air in the tire and use the high pressure pump to pump in another 15 pounds since it will pump to 70 psi I figured it would certainly add another 15 psi of fluid to a 30 psi tire. needless to say I got confident and daring and just went for it. I likely still had about 5psi in the tire even though it read zero. both tires were just off the ground. a flat spot would have worked better as I was parked on a slight hill.
@victorcastle1840
@victorcastle1840 6 лет назад
Good morning Dave, I have been pondering what to do since last year, ever since I started working down by the creek bank. I finally just decided what ever I did, would be the wrong choice and went with wheel weights, which doesn't put the weight as low as the fluid, but won't damage the brand new rims, I had to buy to put on commercial tread tires. I have 280 lbs per wheel and room enough for one more weight on the bolts. Sure feels like a different tractor, than the old L3300 with Turf tires. Especially when digging out Asian Autumn Olive crap, with the loader. Now wish loader bucket was couple feet shorter and wouldn't dig up such a wide hole :-( 15 years ago I could have cut my way down there. But then 15 years ago, didn't have many of those damn things ( I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you ) !!!XX%$#^
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 лет назад
Vic so true the government seems to want to save us all. lol I don't think the windshield washer fluid will hurt the rims or tires even long term. if I did I would not have used it. seems the washer fluid is widely used by dealerships as an option.

Overkill is underrated. I like the way you think. This was the perfect setup in my opinion. You made sure to not over pressurize the tire while not splashing windshied washer everywhere. You have a very precise way to confirm liquid level. And it was quite fast too! Ingenious. I had to replay 3 times the price per gallon. I could not believe it! I've never done any search about windshield washer versus rubber. Is this safe for rubber in the long term? Thanks for sharing with us this nice idea!
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 лет назад
from what I have been told windshield washer fluid is safe for use with rubber and is a highly used choice in ballast by many tractor dealerships. the additives that keep it from freezing are along the same lines as antifreeze which is also used in tractor tires but cost a bit more per gallon. according to autozone management the price on this washer fluid does fluctuate from time to time based on inventory. I got this price at the end of the cold season in virginia. which is when they are less likely to sell negative 20 degree washer fluid. there is still a discount on quantities of 12 but may very based on where and when you purchase it. the store I got mine at only had 5 gallons but they contacted all the local stores and had all their inventory sent to my store and I picked up 72 gallons although I only needed 58 gallons and could have just bought 60 gallons. I did not want to risk spilling some and needing more. he said I could return what I did not use although I have already been putting it my car. the more my eyes age the more my windshield needs cleaning. " I like to blame my poor eye sight on a dirty windshield". ha ha
@FromSteelToWood
@FromSteelToWood 6 лет назад
Thanks for the information. Very useful. I plan on adding balast on the small Bolens. It will be windshield washer for sure. The Case already has balast, which is most likely calcium. On a side note, I am a freak of clean winshield. I apply Aquapel on the windshield twice a year and it helps a lot keeping the winshield clean.

you re 100% correct that is exactly what the manual says. this is why it took me so long to decide to do this. I cant tell you if I was wrong or right for adding the ballast. my intention when I built this manifold was so in the event that I needed to leave the hoe on for a long period of time I could use the manifold to drain the washer fluid out. I plan to install a air valve in one line. this way I could shut off one valve pump air in to about 35 or 40 psi and then close that volve and open the other to allow the washer fluid to push out into a 55 gallon drum. I have never done this yet and as you seen I did install the backhoe and use it with the tires loaded. the question is will this hurt the tractor and how will it hurt the tractor. so this is the rumors I hear from Kubota. the reason they do NOT want the rear tires loaded when the backhoe is installed is because it will create TO MUCH traction and the tractor will not be able to spin the tires and therefore it could damage the differential or transmission if you tried pushing or pulling a load on hard surfaces with the backhoe on and the tires loaded. the motor is strong enough that it may not stall before it actually broke something. so when the hoe is on I take special care to not try and push to much load with the front end loader. I don't push the pile from the bottom if its wet heavy or has been sitting for a long while. I think if I was leaving the hoe on for a long period of time I may remove the washer fluid. this is also one of the reasons I went with washer fluid rather than rim guard. rim guard is heavier so that would create even more strain on the tractor. I will say this you can really tell the difference when the backhoe is on and the rear tires are loaded compared to when the backhoe is on and the rear tires are not loaded. I know I would never get all the washer fluid out but I could get nearly all of it out just by placing the valve at 6 oclock rather than 12 oclock. hope that make sense. if you have any additional questions or need clarification on any of this please ask and I will do the best I can to explain it further. I may install that valve on the manifold and do a video on that. maybe even show draining the rear tires and see how fast I can get them empty. thanks for the question.

@@daveknowshow Thank you,sir, for the insights. I wasn't thinking about how I could possibly have too much traction but now that you explain it I see where the bh with loaded tires could combine for so much weight that something would have to give out if the tires couldn't spin. I'm a tractor novice but that makes sense to me. The bh adds a lot of weight in and of itself. I think the bh77 I run is somewhere around 900lbs. Anyway, I'm getting ready to store the bh and I think I'll give your method a go in loading the rears for the winter and decide whether to leave it or drain it next spring. I've got a box blade that I use quite a bit and wouldn't mind having the traction with loaded tires. It may come down to being extra careful when using the bh. Thanks again, Dave, for getting back to me so quickly. Please keep up the good work. It's much appreciated!

no it dont hurt the rims and yes beet juice is heavier however not enough to warrant the cost difference in my mind or my wallet. lol ha ha. this works very well for me because if I need to I can remove the washer fluid into a drum and it dont smell. the rim guard is nasty stuff to work with. plus I can install the washer fluid myself with the parts I built. if I need a gallon more just run to any store. not so with rim guard. typically you have to pay them to come out and install it for you. I started to use rim guard myself they offered to sell it to me at a local dealer in a 55 gallon drum. the washer fluid just seemed faster cleaner and less expensive for my use.

Nice project. I know pumping is way faster, but if I connected an inverted jug above the fill valve in a closed system, wouldn't the fluid run down into the tire and the air gurgle back into the jug? I want to do this to my lawn tractor for ballast for a snow blower. I think we are only talking 6 gallons in each tire. I realize the jug could not hold any pressure. no tubes straight in the tire. I did have a little seeping at one spot on the edge at the bead. I simply pumped her up to 30psi with air and drove it around a bit. the next day I positioned the valve stem at the top 12 o'clock and drained off the air to read 20 psi it has not leaked a drop. I may let another 5 psi out to bring it down to between 15 psi and 18 psi for added traction and a little softer ride. the fluid did make the ride a lot stiffer. thanks for the great question and for commenting. also some people do install tubes when adding fluid mostly its when adding calcium chloride because its so corrosive.

if you let out to much air the tire will come off the rim bead and its a pain to get back on nd sealed. leaving a few pounds of air pressure in there keeps the tire sealed on the rim. hope I explained that correctly.

Why not just leave both valves fully open until fluid starts coming out of the bleed side. Looks like it would go faster if you weren’t pumping against any back pressure.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 3 года назад
the reason why is because the fluid will take the path of least resistance and simply go back to tank rather than into the tire. we have to maintain some tire pressure or the tire itself will come loose off the rim losing the seal at the bead. hope that makes sense.

IMPLEMENT MAKE BEST BALLAST FOR YOUR TRACTOR
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 3 года назад
true but when you need added power to ground in order to pull that rear ground engaging implement you simply cant hardly complain about tire ballast. I think the windshield washer fluid is cleaner and less damaging to rims and tires than other options. as I said it also helped a lot when pulling the plow, road blade or boxblade having the extra weight in the tires to engage the power to the ground.
@whitelightningraceproducti7756
you do know that you can get this done incredibly cheap by a professional right? for about 2-2.50$ per gallon you can have an actual liquid ballast that is designed for this not just a store bought over the counter product that will literally rust and dry rot your rims? If you are going to do this at least use RV antifreeze not washer fluid I cant believe how many people use washer fluid its amazing. not to mention the cost of building that manifold and the time it took to make it.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 5 лет назад
not true this was by far less expensive and washer fluid, antifreeze and such is what most tractor dealers use. if you are referring to beet juice its quite a bit more expensive than what I did this for. this is NOT something I went willy nelly into. this is something I have researched for several years before doing this. now if you have it done on a new tractor at the dealer they may build it into the cost just to make the tractor sale. that was not the case for me. additionally they use windshield washer fluid at a lot of dealers. it does not hurt or rust the rims or have any more or less effect on tires than any other product does long term. beet juice is a smelly mess that stains anything it gets on. the manifold was cheap to make but more importantly it was a fun project that was educational. of course some folks can not do things like that they lack the talent but those folks likely should not own a dangerous machine like a tractor anyway.
@whitelightningraceproducti7756
@@daveknowshow I'm not talking about beet juice. They make actual products for this most commonly as of late has been tl90 it's a non corrosive non reactive formula that doesn't freeze and you can get it for around 2.50$ a gallon installed at alot of industrial tire locations. Washer fluid is made up of mostly water and alcohol which is going to slowly eat away at your tires and rims creating ling term issues. Yes washer fluid is the cheapest. But cheap is not nearly the best way to go.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 5 лет назад
additionally RV antifreeze may not freeze solid but it does freeze into a thick blob of jell that flops around in the tire during extreme cold temperatures. I would never use that stuff originally I was going with RV antifreeze until I discovered this before putting it in. my son works for Kubota they use antifreeze in tires there. the man down the road from me just bought a john dear from a large dealership here in fact the largest " jamesriver equipment" it has windshield washer fluid in it which was installed and sold to the buyer as wheel ballast. beet juice is available here but its more cost over twice per gallon and then they charge to put it in. I try extremely hard to only upload and create videos with 100% accurate information at the time the video is created. with all that said many folks may not want to mess with doing it themselves and for them they can see in this video what all is involved and feel more comfortable knowing its best they NOT attempt it and instead pay someone else. for the others they can see a very educational video showing the actual pressures as well as the manifold and how I went about it in a fashion that was with in my budget. hope that helps explain thanks for your comment it is much appreciated!
