Addressing The Kino Lorber/Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 Situation | Planet CHH

I believe the reason these titles didn't sell well for Scream Factory is because they were some of the first releases they put out with that $30+ price tag attached. I remember people at the time being really upset and disappointed that SF didn't repackage the original with the sequels and release it as a boxset. In hindsight the foreshadowing is poetic lol. But as I said before, I'm confident the Sleepaway Camp sequels will come back out. It may take a few years, but someone will do them. We don't have tangible proof or confirmation that Kino has the licenses - just that they aren't interested. Beyond that, licenses expire. Sublicensing is a possibility. Other boutique labels have deals with MGM. Personally I'd love to see a 4K box set with all 3 films freshly restored.

When Our Hastings was put out of business they had marked everything down more and more. I made the mistake of messing around about it and buying whatever other stuff first. THE time I headed to buy them they were gone. They were the Scream Factory 2&3.. FFFFF. I had just missed them. I was up there EVERY Day. Thank You for the info!

I've actually spoken with Kino Lorber about Buried Alive 2 (with Alley Sheedy) and they said they had no interest in releasing that and they only did the first film because of the director Frank Darabont.

And that tweet was back in 2021. Before the Kino Cult line. So there may be hope since Kino Cult released Alien Outlaw and Dark Power. Those are far worse than the Sleepaway sequels. THis coming from a Lash LaRue fan.

Great video man! I'm a big fan of Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3 and would love to own them on Blu Ray. I am also a big Kino fan as they put out a bunch of random stuff that I love that aren't very popular like It's Pat and A Rich Man's Wife.

I wonder if the Pamela Springsteen situation, isn’t affecting this decision. She has notoriously disowned these, and I’m positive that her brother, carry’s a lot of weight in the entertainment industry.

In a perfect world I'd love to have a Sleepaway Camp 2&3 4K box set. I just recently bought the recalled Red Cross DVD set on eBay for a reasonable price, I'd say it's the best release of those films, by far, packaging wise, at least.

I bet Kino releases 2&3 as part of the Cult Kino line. They are putting out Food of the Gods. So anything is possible. Also have to say, it’s Twitter. Who knows who was handling the account back in 2021. They might not be an employee anymore.

We need an ultimate 4k boxset with goodies for all 3.

I'm so glad I grabbed the Sleepaway Camp 2-3 blu rays at my Vintage Stock when they were still in print, probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. I only paid about 20 or 22 dollars for them each factory sealed.

Why would a company want to have the rights to a movie that they don't intend to release? Sell to some company that would release it that's ridiculous to hold a license and not put it out

Totally agree man, was able to pick up part 3, I have the 88 films part 2 but really hate I missed out on the scream factory. I love the mini docs on the scream factory (they can be found on RU-vid which is nice) a tale of two sequels part 1 and 2

I have all of them on bluray from SF and thats enough for me. If the 1st was released in 4k, id buy that one though.

That representative for Kino should be fucking fired!!!! You can’t use foul language like that when addressing people. This is a company for fuck’s sake!!! If someone on my job used that language with someone inquiring about a product it would be their job!! I hope that guy reported this to Kino.

Not going to lie, this make me like Kino Lorber even more. They were being honest. Think of how deep a discount Kino puts on releases during sales. If Kino thinks they cannot move those titles on 4K marked down during sales and make money themselves, I 100% understand them not going through with the 4k. We should be happy Shout and 88 Films even put out the blu's.

IIRC the negatives for 2&3 were missing when Shout! Factory put them out on blu-ray and that pretty much put a damper on some people's enthusiasm on those releases. Maybe Kino hasn't put them out yet because said negatives are still missing and don't want to reuse really dated HD masters from the DVD era for those two films.

I had the Scream Factory 1, 2 and 3...should've kept them...life keeps keeping on...

I have VHS copies of Sleep a way Camp 2 and 3 that Lunchmeat put out last year. Pretty sweet.

So, sort of related to this in the sense of wondering why certain labels don’t release things that they currently have the rights to: Shout/Scream Factory, they used to put out a lot more 50s era horror and sci-fi but they’ve slacked off from that, even to the point of only offering some such as Attack of the Crab Monsters and the She Creature as limited editions of 1000-1500. The argument on those seems to be there’s not enough interest in those to rerelease older releases/do regular rather than limited editions/ put them out period. But I counter that with Film Masters. Film Masters have been putting out that 1950s-1960s genre fair on Blu-ray and have clearly found a market. Granted it could be a licensing thing as I believe some if not all of the Film Masters ones are public domain or at least cheaply had as they’re mostly stuff that used to be on those 50 movie packs from Mill Creek. Anyway just wondering if you have any thoughts on that.

I mean 3 DOES suck, but 2 is a lot of fun.

I remember a couple years ago the KL social media person was making a lot of these types of comments I think it happened around the time they released Lost Highway. I thought it was a little unprofessional but at the same time it was just refreshing to see a company engaging.

A bare bones edition with both movies on one disc would be better than nothing. I was lucky enough to get them on the bay they were released. But now part 2 going for $270. I love these movies and there needs to be a way for people who don’t have them to get them on physical media

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is that while Scream Factory did a new restoration for Sleepaway Camp, they did not for parts 2 and 3. Not sure what the sources were, but people speculated an old tv master. Those blus look pretty rough. So anyone wanting to put them out only have access to those very outdated, probably 20 year old masters. Not sure if Scream just wanted to cut corners or if the elements weren't available.

I'm with you on this one, I would've handled it more professionally. I love Kino too and have tons of their stuff but just because a movie isn't all that doesn't mean it deserves to be held hostage from fans of it. Especially when, like you stated, a standard release with both films to a case like their release of the Dr. Phibes collection would make a lot of people happy. I'm lucky enough to own the Scream Factory releases but I certainly know how people who don't feel. It's just an unfortunate situation and I hope they'll reconsider

Good video, man. I do agree that Kino could of been more professional with their response because it was kinda rude imo. I understand that they don't like the movies, but they didn't need to say they did. And even though they don't like them, those releases will still make them money if they do release them. So, they might as well put them out, even if it is a budget release. It would be cool if Arrow got the rights to them.

Look at the movies that Kino has released over the recent years. If they had the Sleepaway Camp movies, they’d definitely release them.

Off topic but the Fat Boys shirt is fire!!! My girlfriend and me just watched Disorderlies a month ago. I hadn't seen it in like 30 years or more.

If fans are lucky enough hopefully an overseas company will get the rights. If it's a company like Second Sight Films and they do 4K at least it will be Region Free (well unless they decide to Region Lock them). But I can find a cheap Region Free player someplace. Kino could rent out the rights Overseas if they STILL own them to a place like Second Sight.

i would easily drop a decent amount of $$$ for a trilogy box set. blu or 4k, i’d get it regardless.

I appreciate your passion on the movies, but I think it is misguided. The screen shot you showed just says they don't have interest in the movies~it doesn't confirm they have the rights to them. Unless there is more info you have that you didn't share with us? Otherwise, we really don't know who has the rights. If Kino did, they would put them out. It's why they put out It's Pat. Because it's about money, not just about the film to them as a company.

Very well said. I'd love to see a new version of 2 and 3 put out there, I missed the Scream Factory editions when they were releasing and oftentimes secondhand prices are outrageous of course so whoever ends up putting them out there is beside the point to me personally, I'd just really like to see these films not fade into obsolete territory.

Original always going to be the best

Just recently discovered Sleepaway Camp trilogy in the past year on Tubi. I thought all 3 were very entertaining. Would love to have 2 and 3 on bluray. Recently picked up part 2 on dvd in a pawn shop. There are a lot of great horror flicks that are just being "stored" by companies. Such a shame.

The people at Kino definitely seem to have an attitude problem, they seem a bit self-righteous about certain movies and just their company in general. If they don't want to do anything with them then just give it to VS, I'm sure they'll be VERY HAPPY to do it.

Seems like Kino is leaving money on the table with this one.

I own all three sleepaway camps with the slips. Other than the first I can’t say I’m a huge fan of 2 or 3. I think imma rewatch 2 and 3. I don’t see why kino won’t release them. Whether they are good or not is all in the eyes of the beholder. A lot of money they can make with them.

Christian you did nothing wrong. I appreciate you solving the mystery of what happened with KL and 2 and 3. What made me upset was the fact they insulted two movies I enjoyed and I think they could’ve said something more diplomatic. They could’ve been nicer and said to fans “hey keep an eye out, we’re not interested in it right now, but maybe further down the line.” The fact they were so cruel to a fan and other fans I think was crass like you said. Kino may do a double feature of it like they did Porky's II and Revenge. Don't expect much for special features though. Sleepaway Camp II is ok I guess but III is really bad.

Considering that Sleepaway Camp has a pretty healthy following in the horror community, I do think we will inevitably get a re-release of these. It sucks that there’s so much red tape with licensing and distribution, however making content like this is probably the best thing anyone can do to advocate. As long as they see that enough people are interested and there’s money to be made, you can bet it’ll happen. Now, as for convincing Pamela Springsteen to participate in any way, that’s probably never gonna happen 😞

Wow talk about a rude response from Kino, completely unprofessional, a customer asking about a movie and they respond like "We have no interest in releasing that shitty movie deal with it" that kind of response should be met with backlash on that company, they shouldn't be allowed to respond to customers in that kind of immature rude way.

I find it astonishing that a company that sells physical media would come out with a comment like that. Especially when quite a few of their movies they sell are god awful. I purchased Sleepaway Camp 2 on blu-ray on Amazon, the import region free edition, and I own part 3 on Anchor Bay dvd. But honestly, F KL for holding these movies hostage and having such a horrible attitude about it. I will no longer purchase any KL releases.

Sleep away Camp 2 and 3 being out of print is reflected in its eBay prices. I just saw a Blu-ray 📀 copy of 2 for $150. No I'm not kidding. It's a pricey movie to get now.

C i was just watching my SF 4k blu-ray of Halloween 6 Producers cut and it froze at 39.22. Contacted SF and they were very cool about it.

Kino is a company that is trying to make profit. They probably wouldn't sell 5,000 copies of Sleepaway camp 2 & 3. The problem with the 4k cult is they expect to get everything they want.

This is a weird situation because people want it. if people bought them from Shout Factor, they would have retained the rights. Kino is right. These aren't the best movies. That being said, what's the point in owning something that you were never going to release? There is a line in Joe Dirt that I'm going to quote. " it's not what you like it's the consumer." imo Kino lorber is the worst boutique label. I'm kicking myself now because I bought their release of Silence of the Lambs on 4K. I should have waited for the arrow release. After watching this video, I couldn't sleep last night because I am praying that Kino lorber doesn't have the rights to Poltergeist 3.

My theory is Kino isn’t putting them out because the films are politically incorrect. Maybe I’m wrong. I love Kino, I’m not trying to create an angry mob. But we all know the kinds of films they release. Sleepaway Camp certainly isn’t beneath them.

To me, it sounds like their issue is with the first film, as it seems a rather visceral one at that. It may have to do with personal feelings towards the twist at the end.

KL can give the license to another studio who will give these movies the love they genuinely deserve. I'm not a fan of Kino and their attitude towards customers in general.

I don't blame Kino for not releasing them. I'm sure other labels that buy the rights to these package deals have no interest in releasing every single title. For those that are region free, just buy the 88 Films Blu-rays.

You and others saying “a lot of people” want these movies is not really a lot of people. It’s like people saying “why no 4K?” When only a fraction of people have 4K players and TVs.

I never saw a need to own Sleepaway Camp 2 on anything other than DVD. It’s a straight to video flick from the 80s. It looks and sounds cheap because it is cheap. Hi-def and surround sound takes away some of the charm. Incidentally the DVDs for parts 2 and 3 are still available for about 12 bucks apiece.

I call bluff on Scream Factory’s reason for not renewing the licenses for parts 2 and 3 as well. Look at all the crap that they put out: Alligator, for example. You mean to tell me that a company that puts out Alligator is going to complain about Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 sales? I’m calling bluff on that. There is something Scream Factory’s former employee/founder(?) isn’t saying, or perhaps cannot or will not say.
